Rachel Maddow’s monologue is barely exaggeration.  It is almost exactly how the far right wing in our country operates. Enjoy:

These neo-cons don’t actually believe in American values.  They don’t value our system.  They don’t support the adversarial system that forms the basis of our jurisprudential system.  These hatemongers don’t realize that in the American legal system, even Satan himself would get a lawyer and a fair trial.  That’s the greatness of our country.  Do these neo-cons not believe in the ideals of our great nation?

Instead, they want to adopt the ways of dictatorships…simply greasing people suspected of terrorism, or locking them up in gulags without fair trials.  These far right wing loons think that our system is not strong enough to withstand these terrorists, so we have to give up all our values.  (The terrorists want to destroy our values, and the only way we can prevent that is by destroying our values!) These neo-cons are quite simply un-American.

As a side-note: I can’t help but think that the only reason why Liz Cheney’s smear against the nine lawyers will be challenged (at least by some people in the media) is because those men are not Muslims.  When it comes to Muslims, such smears–six degrees of separation, guilt by association, etc.–are almost never questioned.   It’s open season against Muslims.  In fact, a smeared Muslim will have to spend the rest of his life defending himself and his name.

Lastly, I think it’s sad that “bin” has become associated with terrorist.  “Bin” simply means “son of” and is used by an entire ethnic group as the way they name and identify themselves.  It should be as offensive as saying “ching chang chong” or similar things.  But alas, you can nowadays say almost anything about and against Muslims.

    Wow. Another right winger adopting McCarthyite tactics, this time equating legal representation to terrorist sympathisers. Just like her father and the rest of the neocons hellbent on destroying world, she has absolutely no respect for the bill of rights, although of course Obama has proved no more inclined to protecting this sacred document having just extend certain provisions of the PATRIOT ACT.

    I really cannot understand how, after all the evil they have done and continue to propagate, Republicans are still considered electorally viable by such a large proportion of the US electorate. Some commenters on Loonwatch love having a go at Europe, but the US is a nation of extreme views (from all sides of the political spectrum) which are afforded a frightening influence on policy making. For all of the UK’s faults, I’m glad I don’t live in the US.

    Unless you actually have proof behind your claim, you really don’t have the right to study the Qur’an if you can’t read Arabic or pay attention to the intricacies of the language.

    Win the loyalty of Muslims? Are you basing your claim on the fact that Muslims put church before the state? If so, you’re wrong, because the Qur’an clearly says that a covenant must never be broken, regardless whether it’s an Islamic state or not. One could say that Muslims don’t care about that law, but even so, you’re making a baseless generalization.

    Other than the fact that Arabic is obviously translateable, if the quran can only be understood in Arabic then it is not a universal religion.

    That’s true, it’s not particularly hard to translate. However, I think having at least a basic knowledge of Arabic is useful when studying Islam. You’ll understand what I mean if you know Arabic.

    One does not have to speak Arabic to be a Muslim, obviously. But to study and interpret the Quran – which was revealed in Arabic – with any kind of deep understanding or nuance, yes.

    For those Muslims who do not understand Arabic like myself (one day, God willing), we look on to the translations, commentaries and consensus of scholars that have gone before. This isn’t about exclusion of non-Arabic speaking Muslims, as you imply. The Quran is there to be interpreted and understood by anyone who wishes to approach it. But not everyone has the tools, and not everyone can be expected to be taken seriously if they don’t put in the hard work, time and effort. Not all “experts” are created equal.

    Quite right, nat. It’s the same for studying anything written in another language. Even with all the English translations available for the Bible, for instance, the surest and best understanding will be had by the person who can read it in its original languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek). I can get by in the ‘New Testament’ with the Greek and a good concordance; but I don’t read Hebrew and Aramaic at all. Therefore my knowledge of the ‘Old Testament’ will not be as complete as it could be.

    I know no Arabic at all, so I’m completely dependent on English translations for knowledge of the Qur’an. I have been using translations available online: Muhammad Asad’s translation (http://www.altafsir.com/ViewTranslations.asp?Display=yes&SoraNo=1&Ayah=0&toAyah=0&Language=2&LanguageID=1&TranslationBook=7) and another which gives access to 3 different English translations (http://www.bookofsigns.org/your-quran/read-and-listen-to-the-quran-online/). I also purchased (a couple of days ago) the translation of M.A.S. Abdel Haleem so I wouldn’t be restricted to my computer for reading it. All of these (and no doubt others) are available to anyone who is interested.

    But for someone like ‘lawrence’, the availability of the Qur’an in English is beside the point – because such people have let their minds and hearts be filled with bigotry and hatred and they aren’t willing to investigate to see if the anti-Islamic things they hear are true. What the Prophet Jesus (blessed by God) said – referring to the Prophet Isaiah (peace to him) – is appropriate for such people: “With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that says: ‘You will indeed listen, but never understand, and you will indeed look, but never perceive. For this people’s heart has grown dull, and their ears are hard of hearing, and THEY HAVE SHUT THEIR EYES; so that they might not look with their eyes, and listen with their ears, and understand with their heart and turn – and I would heal them’” (Matthew 13:14 and 15). Or as the Qur’an says: “… your hearts became as hard as rocks, or even harder, for there are rocks from which streams spring out, and some from which water comes when they split open, and others which fall down in awe of God: He is not unaware of what you do. So can you [believers] hope that such people will believe you, when some of them used to hear the words of God and then DELIBERATELY TWIST THEM, even when they understood them?” (Qur’an 2:74 and 75)

    But the point of the hilarious video and Danios’ serious comments was that our hate-and-fear mongers undermine the most basic principles of our Constitution (in the USA), and are therefore themselves anti-American, UNpatriotic. And the video and Danios are exactly right!

    Also check out Tarif Khalidi and A.J. Arberry’s translation. I don’t like Yusuf Ali’s popular translation.

    On Arabic and being a Muslim, you can certainly be a good Muslim and have an understanding of Islam without knowing Arabic, but if you really want to get into the details, you need to learn Arabic.

Examples include Norman Mailer, Damien Hurst, Gore Vidal, Oliver Stone, Harold Pinter, John Pilger, Michael Moore, George Galloway, Kevin Toolis, Ken Loath and others, I don’t really have the space to name them all. Of course it’s not really a suprise, the left has supported Mao, Castro, Stalin, Milosevic and most recently the tyranny of West Bengal.

    Wrong, Ken Loach for example praised the ‘Iraqi resistance’ (AKA the same people who bomb mosques and churches), George Galloway’s support for islamic supremacism is well known (for example praising hezbollah), Gore Vidal tried to justify 9/11. I can prove that every person on that list supports islamic terrorism and supremacism; anyone with access to google can. I could have provided links to back up my post but I was trying to keep it short.

    George Galloway is a bit of a loon but I never heard him say he supported terror ,he does question the official line on 9:11 but thats not the same thing and he is not a big fan of Isreal or do you equate that as supporting terror?

I have written down those 2 names; if my finances improve (it looks like that would take a miracle) I’ll probably look for them in a bookstore or at Amazon.com. I looked for them online, but couldn’t find them. I did bookmark a few more though; one of them (by Ahmed Ali) looks very interesting – a bit more ‘free’ in translation that others perhaps.

    Nat and Biz – Thank you for the kind words. I believe we will all be helped if we can keep our comments as ‘positive’ as possible, while still showing hateful attitudes and (sometimes willful) ignorance for what they are. If it’s possible to be kind in our criticisms, we ought to strive for it. I’m convinced God is always willing to heal those who don’t deliberately shut their eyes, stop up their ears, and harden their hearts. That, of course, is something each of us needs to watch out for.

    I”m thinking an 11 on that scale.

    You, as the loon you are, smear people by adding your interpretation, i.e. “The same people who bomb mosques and churches.” You know who else bombed mosques in Iraq? Let me give you a hint: it’s the red, white, and blue.

    Now before you smear me too, I wouldn’t say that I support the Iraqi resistance against the United States. That’s because I’m an American citizen, so all I can say is that I am opposed to the illegal war, and hope we withdraw, and I pray for peace. I am a lover of peace. I truly believe that when war breaks out, we don’t have to pick a side, one country or the other. We can instead opt to choose the side of humanity. It is better to be the one who brings about peace and reconciliation, not cheerleading for war and death.

    But even though I cannot say that I support the Iraqi resistance against the United States, I can obviously understand why Muslims and Iraqis in the region would hate the invaders. According to you, the vast majority of Muslims living in the Muslim majority world are loons, since all of them support the Iraqi resistance, knowing that every people have a right to defend their land from foreign occupiers. (I guess, being the loon that you are, you would have no problem with saying the vast majority of Muslims in the world are loons.)

    And let me break this down for you even further, since you are not the sharpest tool in the shed. There were tons of different groups of resistant fighters, and not all of them bombed mosques and churches. Just like I don’t think every single American soldier raped Iraqi girls, as some did.

    Anyone praising a movement that routinely does stuff like that is a moron. Second of all a lot of them aren’t even Iraqis; a great deal of them have come from countries like saudi arabia and you are aware that the vast majority of Iraqis do not support the ‘insurgency’ right? I’m sure that not every ‘insurgent’ is a genocidial maniac however the actions of the ‘resistance’ (ie suicide bombing a shiite funera) show that it is a terrorist movement not a legitimate representation of the Iraqi people.

    What you didn’t know in your profound ignorance is that the Sunni resistance turned against the foreign Al-Qaeda elements long time ago. This is well known to anyone who follows the news. Clearly, this shows that the resistance is made up of a variety of groups, and you in your typical fashion, use broad strokes to smear them all. Typical of you.
