Barack Obama commented on the Cordoba Center that will be near Ground Zero, reaffirming freedom of religion as an essential American value.
Islamophobes were furious about this. For many of them this probably confirmed their belief that Obama is a Muslim.

Obama is in effect saying that you can build a triumphal mosque marking Islam’s superiority and victory — which is how the Ground Zero mosque will be viewed in the Islamic world — and you can lie about your funding, and lie about your commitment to interreligious dialogue and harmony, and refuse to denounce jihad terrorists, and all that is just fine with him.
Pamela Geller had this to say through an SIOA news release,
Obama “has, in effect, sided with the Islamic jihadists and told the ummah (at an Iftar dinner on the third night of Ramadan) that he believes in and supports what will be understood in the Islamic world as a triumphal mosque on a site of Islamic conquest.”

Washington (CNN) — President Obama threw his support behind a controversial proposal to build an Islamic center and mosque near New York’s ground zero, saying Friday that “Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country.”
“That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances,” Obama said at a White House Iftar dinner celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
The president’s remarks drew praise from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who announced his support for the Islamic center last week.
Bloomberg compared Obama’s speech to a letter President George Washington wrote in support of a Jewish congregation in Newport, Rhode Island. “President Obama’s words tonight evoked President Washington’s own august reminder that ‘all possess alike liberty,’ ” Bloomberg said in a statement.
“I applaud President Obama’s clarion defense of the freedom of religion tonight,” he said.

Critics of the proposed Islamic center quickly denounced Obama’s remarks. “President Obama is wrong,” said Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.). “It is insensitive and uncaring for the Muslim community to build a mosque in the shadow of Ground Zero. Unfortunately, the President caved into political correctness.”
“While the Muslim community has the right to build the mosque, they are abusing that right by needlessly offending so many people who have suffered so much,” King said in a statement. “The right and moral thing for President Obama to have done was to urge Muslim leaders to respect the families of those who died and move their mosque away from Ground Zero.”

Obama, who said he was speaking both as a citizen and as president, invoked the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, which critics of the Islamic center cite as the main reason for preventing its construction.
“We must all recognize and respect the sensitivities surrounding the development of lower Manhattan,” Obama said, according to his prepared remarks. “The 9/11 attacks were a deeply traumatic event for our country.”
“The pain and suffering experienced by those who lost loved ones is unimaginable,” he continued. “So I understand the emotions that this issue engenders. Ground zero is, indeed, hallowed ground.”
But Obama said one “reason that we will win this fight” against terrorism is “our capacity to show not merely tolerance, but respect to those who are different from us — a way of life that stands in stark contrast to the nihilism of those who attacked us on that September morning, and who continue to plot against us today.”
Repeatedly invoking the nation’s founders and examples of religious tolerance from American history, the president argued that national ideals and the Constitution demanded that the project proceed.
He noted that Thomas Jefferson hosted the the first Iftar dinner at the White House more than 200 years ago and said that the country had previously seen “controversies about the construction of synagogues or Catholic churches.”
“But time and again,” he said, “the American people have demonstrated that we can work through these issues.”
“This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable,” Obama said. “The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country, and will not be treated differently by their government, is essential to who we are. The writ of our Founders must endure.”
The proposed Islamic center has provoked vocal opposition from some families of 9/11 victims and other groups. Nearly 70 percent of Americans oppose the plan, according to CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Wednesday.
“Obama came out for the Islamic supremacist mosque at the hallowed ground of 911 attack,” Pamela Geller, a leading foe of the Islamic center, wrote on her blog Friday night. “He has, in effect, sided with the Islamic jihadists.”
Muslim Americans, meanwhile, applauded the speech. “It was pitch perfect and it was cut and dry,” said Eboo Patel, executive director of the Interfaith Youth Core and a Muslim adviser to the White House on faith issues. “He said that our Founding Fathers built a nation on religious freedom where people from different faiths can pray and thrive and that is that.”
Some Muslims said they were surprised to hear the president weigh in on the controversy.
“It’s such a hot potato and he’s already got so much on his plate and people jumping on him for any hint of an Islamic connection,” said Akbar Ahmed, an American University professor who attended Friday’s White House dinner. “But he plunged in and took a very bold position.”
The Islamic center’s leaders say they plan to build the $100 million, 13-story facility called Cordoba House three blocks from the site of the 9/11 attacks. The developer, Sharif El-Gamal, describes the project as an “Islamic community center” that will include a 500-seat performing arts center, a lecture hall, a swimming pool, a gym, a culinary school, a restaurant and a prayer space for Muslims.
On Wednesday, the project’s developers declined an offer by New York Gov. David Paterson to relocate the project to a state-owned site.
Earlier this month, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimously denied landmark status for the building where the proposed Islamic center would stand, allowing the project to move forward.

Every Muslim on the planet is aware of the controversy surrounding the building of the mosque near the site of the destroyed World Trade Center. A refusal by the American government would cause riots by Muslims in every city. Churches and Synagogues could be destroyed. It is best to quell the flames of hatred by letting them choose the location of their new mosque.

You can not hold Islam and the whole Muslim world responsible for the utterly deplorable actions of a few extremist. To do so is tat amount to blame all Christianity for extremist like the westboro baptist church.
I agree completely with NassirHussein. President Obama has likely lost a lot of votes because of this but for facing down huge pressure and standing up for one of the most American of principles, religious freedom, tolerance and respect, FOR ALL, he has gained a lock on my vote and my respect.

BUT, there are people whos loved ones died in the attack who support the building of the mosque. Plus there are survivors who support this Mosque. Please also realize that there’s been a mosque in the Pentagon since 9/11, built under Bush’s administration and no one objected.
I question the timing of this protest against this mosque.

I am 200% in favor of Project 51 and it’s a wonderful idea! It could really contribute to long-over due reconciliation from 9-11!

Constitutionally, this Islamic centre has all the right to be built. I’m not sure if it’s exactly sensible to do so however. Let’s face it: As Muslims, we haven’t done much to endear ourselves to the non-Muslim world at large.
Unfortunately, there will be illegal public reprisals against this centre to be sure. We can only hope that the ONLY injuries will be people’s feelings and nothing more.

I’m about 95% certain that the Islam-bashers here, are either Christian or Jewish conservatives. That fact alone is enough to show what this is really all about; religious competition and tribalism. You don’t like being challenged. You don’t like that such a large group of people can successfully believe in Jesus and the OT stories differently than you do.
The truth about Islam (which is said in the Qur’an) is that it really is nothing new. Besides the Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad, everything else was already present beforehand. Disconnected and undefined perhaps, but it was all still there.

The 99 names of God describe his might and beauty. If you bothered to study the roots of Jesus religion instead of following Paul blindly you’d see there is a similar parallel in Judaism. Judaism is the religion of Jesus not Pauls Christiantiy.
what is the purpose of an apostle Paul if Jesus was God? Paul has impacted Christianity more than Jesus, which proves Jesus is not God. How can Mohammed be the most influential man in history, over and above all the previous Prophets if Jesus is God?

Cristiaty before Paul was monotheistic, and didn’t believe in a man God, it was a Jewish sect. They were monotheistics who didn’t believe the celibacy and “sinless” nonsense that Paul introduced. That was the Christianity that Paul paganised.
I dont’ know what you mean by “sinless”, all the Prophets including Mohammed were men, and their weaknesses are highlighted in their respective books. The Almighty openly chastised The Prophet when he made mistakes, all that is clear in the Quran. But his mistakes were not what you hypocritical liars say they are.
If you mean marriages and concubinage all of that is allowed in the Torah ( that Jesus followed) and it is not a sin. Jesus did not recommend celibacy, he was taken from this world young.
Celibacy is not encouraged, and sex is not a sin in Islam. Neither is it in Jesus religion. It’s Christianity that takes celibacy to be a good state, it’s not.
Alan Dershowitz has questioned why polygamy is banned for Jews, (Torah allows 4 wives and concubinages) now, when it was Christianity that forced Jews to give up this practice. There are calls in Israel to legalise polygamy for Jews on religious grounds.
Thus you see, Jesus religion is the same as ours. This Pastor describes what Paul did to Christiantiy

You are aware of the contradiction you’re spouting here, right? You claim Allah didn’t give himself these names, because it’s not for normal people. Allah is not a normal person. It’s God. Besides, Mohammed didn’t give them all to him. Most were revealed in the Qur’an, which was delivered to Mohammed by God himself.

Some groups believe Allah was the Pagan Moon God but the contents within the Qu’ran are proof that it is in fact a Abrahamic religion. The Torah and the Christian bible when translated to Arabic use Allah instead of God because Allah is God.
Mohammed is the most influential person because out of the major three Prophets he is the only one that we can prove that actually existed and did things that we recorded in history. Even if he made it all up it’s still amazing that he read the other books and actually did bring people together single handed and fought against the oppression from the other more popular religions of it’s time. He didn’t do any miracles but that may be because he was the only non-fictional Prophet of the three.
I won’t go to say that Jesus or Moses didn’t really exist but there is a lack of hard evidence to prove otherwise. But absence of presence is not proof of the presence being absent.
On the subject of the Mosque, by all means should they have the right to build the Mosque. The site is also two blocks away how far should someone build a mosque away from ground zero. I think some people thing their building it on the site itself. The Mosque does sound a bit like a big American Islam attraction that true Islam followers may find a bit cheesy and the 911 paranoia crowd
would find a bit unsettling.
I have huge respect for Obama standing up for the rights of people and peoples right to choose their own religions. I just hope that he can make the right decision in keeping the peace with Iran, America doesn’t need any more enemies. Cleaning up after the oil hungry Bush campaign can’t be a peace of cake though.

The crescent symbol originated in Turkey, and was adopted by Muslims in the 15th century to distinguish churches from mosques. It is not a “symbol of Islam”. Robert Morey is a tool, who, like Spencer, misuses sources.
In reality, Allah was never regarded as a “moon god”, even by the pagan Arabs. They regarded “Allah” as an abstract, creator deity and the supreme god in Heaven. Their idol moon deity “Hubal” was regarded as the son of another idol deity of theirs called “Al-Uzza”, who those pagans believed was one of the daughters of Allah.
Therefore, pagans would’ve believed in a “moon god” as being the grandson of Allah, not Allah himself.
In the end though, these trivial name games are ultimately irrelevant, since the concept of God in Islam is defined in Islam, and that’s far more important to who God is in Islam than the name’s etymology.

The right to build a Mosque but not the right to burn a book- sounds like hypocrisy to me.
