The Nuclear Card

Tea Party Nation founder has a problem with Islam

Posted on 28 October 2010 by Rousseau

Judson Phillips is a complete and utter loon

Notice the assumptions: 1) assuming that Rep. Keith Ellison does not support the U.S. Constitution, 2) that Islam instructs its adherents to kill those who disagree with Islam, and 3) that Islam tells its adherents to kill Jews.

This is irresponsible and dangerous rhetoric that can and will lead to the continuing demonization of Muslims in the United States as well as to violent actions against Muslim Americans. Judson Phillips is not just a loon, but a disgusting human being without an ounce of knowledge about the religion of Islam. The statements he made below are completely contradictory: he says voters shouldn’t not vote for a Muslim politician because of their religion, but at the same time he says that Islam tells Muslims to not be loyal to the United States and to kill people who disagree with them (meaning, don’t vote for the people with the crazy religion!). His bigotry is as apparent as it could possibly be.

Tea Party Nation founder: I have a real problem with Islam (Salon.com)

Judson Phillips, the Tea Party Nation leader who recently called for the defeat of Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., because he is Muslim, has put up a new blog post clarifying his views:

Should we vote out Keith Ellison just because he is a Muslim? No.

So that’s that, then? Nope. Phillips goes on to suggest that maybe having a Muslim in Congress isn’t such a good idea after all:

But his beliefs define his character and his character is a central issue. Do we want someone who supports and defends the Constitution or someone who supports the imposition of a theocracy?

Should Muslims be denied the right to run for office because of their religion? No. The Constitution specifies that no religious test can be used to exclude someone from public office. But when someone adheres to an ideology that says kill people who disagree with you, that is something voters should seriously consider when they vote.

Liberals go nuts when they hear this stuff. They think we should simply forget and just be “tolerant.”

I learned everything I needed to know about tolerance on September 11th.

And he also talks to Chris Moody at the Daily Caller:

“A majority of Tea Party members, I suspect, are not fans of Islam,” Phillips said. “I, personally have a real problem with Islam. With Islam, you have a religion that says kill the Jews, kill the infidels. It bothers me when a religion says kill the infidels. It bothers me a lot more when I am the infidel.”

So, to summarize: Phillips does not believe Ellison should be voted out because he is Muslim. But Phillips has a “real problem” with Islam, and he also thinks voters should “seriously consider” whether to vote for an adherent of Islam.

Dang! When I think that one of the first country to diplomatically recognize the United States was a Muslim country, the Kingdom of Morocco, as a letter from then King, Hassan I, to George Washington attests. And what those people say and stand for, and what generally the Republicans are doing amd saying now must have not only Abraham Lincoln, but also George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and generally the Founding Fathers spinning in their graves! Maybe the Earth’s axis of rotation has developed a slight eccentricity because of that! What a bunch of dimwitted half-idiots.

“…Whosoever would not seek the LORD God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:13)

I would probably not vote for people whose religion tells them to kill me too.

Arman See that is the same problem we muslims face…. people quoteing the Quran out of context….and you have to be carefull of that or your no better then the muslim haters read the text ….

“But when someone adheres to an ideology that says kill people who disagree with you”

I am sure the ideology he is talking about is of Christianity:

If anyone does not abide in Me, throw him into the fire, and burn him.(John 15:6)

    @Stephen G. Parker,

I have read your blog and I have to say I take my hat off to you, sir.

The tea party and right wing loons are the only groups that support the imposition of theocracy in the USA. These groups have hijacked the national discourse into one of homophobia, xenophobia and a general phobia of anyone who is not a WASP. For the past few years the only political dialogue in the US has been,
    1. Who is and who is not an American?
    2. Who is and who is not a Patriot?
    3. Who does and who doesn’t represent American values?
    4. Is America right or is America righter?
    5. Can we slap some label on this dog and hang it publicly?

If you think these are the philosophical questions that have created the US and made it a leader in the world today – you are sadly mistaken. Just one city of New York reports nearly 50,000 violent crimes every year. I wonder where is the sense of perspective?

Actually the frequency with which Sura 9:5 is quoted in order to promote fear and hatred of Muslims would be funny if it weren’t so ignorant. As pointed out by others the immediate context makes it clear that it is covenant breakers who are being targeted; but 9:13 is very specific in delineating who these idolaters are: “How could you not fight a people who have broken their oaths, who tried to drive the Messenger out, WHO ATTACKED YOU FIRST? Do you fear them? It is God you should fear if you are true believers.”

Interestingly, for those who talk about later violent passages “abrogating” earlier peaceful passages, verse 13 is obviously a “later revelation” than verse 5 – and it promotes fighting only those who first attacked the believers. Does that “abrogate” 9:5? I say that only facetiously, because it was very apparent right from the beginning of Sura 5 that it was only those who had violated their covenant of peace with the Muslim believers who were being targeted by 9:5.

Wow! I have a real problem with this fella! I know that when Tea Party originally started, it was anti-Obama b/c of his policies (or maybe they were closet racists)but they weren’t really open about their bigotry if there was any. Now they seem to be hijacked by these loons who are racists, islamophobic, and homophobic. What happened? The moderate ones have been silenced by these extremists. Sounds awfully familiar!

  • Anj

You cannot win with these people. They complain that muslims do not integrate well and participate.
When a muslims participate then they are percieved as a threat?
Worse than that they are accused of not patriotic enough.
Then if that fails the Muslims are all practicing taqiyya!
It’s a mental merry go round!

  • Lo

    Typo: It’s interesting to note

  • Lo

What a loon. In the same Quranic verse that says to kill the polytheists (who broke the treaty), it also says to set them free if they repent.

It’s interesting to not that when Nazi Germany was spreading anti-Semitic propagandas, they quote the Talmud out of context and said Jews were prescribed to kill and rape non-Jews. Scary how history repeats itself, eh?

    http://seekersguidance.org/ans-blog/2010/06/14/slay-the-polytheists-wherever-you-find-them-the-need-for-recourse-to-sound-scholarship/

Question: Could you please explain the verse of the Qur’an, “slay the polytheists wherever you find them” [9:5] What are the implications of this verse and why/when was it revealed?

    Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

    InshaAllah you are well.

The key to understanding the verse in question is to understand its context and the circumstances in which it was revealed.

What the Scholars of Qur’anic Exegesis Said

As mentioned by scholars of Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir), these verses were revealed specifically with regards to particular groups of polytheists that breached their peace treaties with the Muslim polity. This is clear in the very first verse, as it mentions that the proclamation is given out specifically to “those polytheists with whom you had made covenants.”

Imam Razi, Imam Jamal, and others clarify in their tafsirs that this proclamation of fighting the polytheists “applies only to those that broke their covenants.” This is also why an exception to the proclamation is made in verse 4 which, as Imam Razi and others clarify, refers to “those who did not break their covenants,” i.e., they were not to be fought.

    Summarizing the Issue

So to summarize, these verses have a clear historical context and cannot be used to justify acts of violence or terrorism committed against innocent civilians.

Furthermore, by Islamic law, a Muslim government must uphold its treaties and covenants with other nations, regardless of the faith of those nations. It is unlawful to break a peace treaty with any other nation. This also applies to any Non-Muslim that is a citizen of a Muslim nation or that peacefully enters one. This is because citizenship and visitor’s visas are legally considered covenants that cannot be violated. They ensure security and protection for the citizen/visitor, and require that the citizen/visitor not break any of the nation’s laws.

The same, of course, applies to a Muslim citizen of a Non-Muslim nation or a Muslim that enters a Non-Muslim nation with a visitor’s visa or the like, which again serve as covenants of mutual peace and protection. It would be unlawful for a Muslim to break such a covenant. This is also in accordance with contemporary international law and is absolutely binding. And Allah knows best.
