Glenn Beck: Off the Rails and into the Abyss with Joel Richardson and Zuhdi Jasser

Posted on 19 February 2011 by Garibaldi

Glenn Beck recently has been harping on and on about the impending doom of Armageddon, and he has figured out who the Anti-Christ is, an “Islamic figure” known as the “12th Imam” or “Mahdi.” To help promote his pseudo-religio-apocalyptic propaganda he had Joel Richardson (fundamentalist Christian) and Zuhdi Jasser, token Muslim beloved by Neo-Cons and wacko Islamophobes.

Beck claims he has been studying this “issue” for nearly five or six years, which is hard to believe when he can’t distinguish between Shi’as and Sunnis:

This hysteria is quite revealing. The Christian right-wing has always scapegoated or somehow cast America’s perceived “enemies” at one time or another as the Anti-Christ. During the Cold War the Soviet Union and its Premieres were the Anti-Christ, during the Gulf War it was Saddam Hussein, at various points throughout history it has been the Pope, and Jerry Falwell thought it obvious that the Anti-Christ was a “male Jew.”

It would almost be an exercise in futility (since they are so obvious) to rebut the horrendous, blatant factual inaccuracies regarding Islamic Eschatology here, but a brief response is necessary.

In the first instance it must be noted that Islamic Eschatology is a debated topic with various theological opinions amongst scholars, and both Sunni Islam and Shia’ Islam have different views of the events and also place different levels of importance on these End Times characters/scenarios. For Shia’ Twelver Islam the Mahdi is a central figure of their Faith whereas amongst Sunnis he is not central to the Faith.

Before we approach this subject it must be made abundantly clear that Muslims believe that no one, not the Prophets, Saints nor the Angels know when the Last Day/End Times will begin. This knowledge belongs only to God because he is the one who has decided it:

“They ask you about the Hour (Day of Resurrection): ‘When will be its appointed time?’ Say: ‘The knowledge thereof is with my Lord (Alone). None can reveal its time but He. Heavy is its burden through the heavens and the earth. It shall not come upon you except all of a sudden.’ They ask you as if you have a good knowledge of it. Say: ‘The knowledge thereof is with God (Alone), but most of mankind know not.’”

[al-‘Araf 7:187]

2 – God says:

“People ask you concerning the Hour, say: ‘The knowledge of it is with God only. What do you know? It may be that the Hour is near!’”

[al-Ahzaab 33:63]

Ibn Katheer (3/527) said:

God tells His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that he has no knowledge of the Hour and that when the people ask him about that, he should refer the matter to God.

Al-Shanqeeti said (6/604):

It is known that the word innama (translated here as “only”) has the effect of limiting or restricting the meaning, so what the verse means is: No one knows when the Hour will come except God alone.

3 – God says:

“They ask you (O Muhammad) about the Hour — when will be its appointed time?

You have no knowledge to say anything about it.

To your Lord belongs (the knowledge of) the term thereof

You (O Muhammad) are only a warner for those who fear it”

[al-Naaz’iaat 79:42-45]

al-Sa’di said:

Because knowing the time of the Hour serves no spiritual or worldly purpose for people, rather their interests lie in it being concealed from them, the knowledge of that has been kept from all of creation and God has kept it to Himself. “To your Lord belongs (the knowledge of) the term thereof.” (via. IslamQA)

It also must be made abundantly clear that according to Islamic doctrine no one, I repeat no one has the ability to hasten the Last Day/End Times. The logic goes: How can one hasten something God has already decided? Nothing any Muslim or non-Muslim does or doesn’t do has one iota of an effect on hastening or bringing closer the End Times. This is completely and utterly in the power of God. To believe otherwise is considered disbelief and counter to Orthodox Islamic teaching amongst all Sunni groups and schools of thought, and I would venture to say most Shia’ groups and schools of thought as well (Shia’ readers feel free to add comments).

Furthermore, Islamic ‘Aqeeda, belief that Allah knows everything and all things happen through His power and Will is so profound and deeply ingrained that the idea of hastening the Last Days never occurred as a theological possibility, it was unimaginable! There is not much said about it over 1400 years of Islamic history precisely because it was inconceivable and absurd from an Islamic viewpoint.

In fact, throughout history individuals who have claimed to have been mahdis or messiahs have generally not had a very happy end: they have either been persuaded to repent, forced to repent, jailed, killed or castigated as false pretenders. (hat tip: Ahmed)

The cult of Juhayman al-Otaibi is a case in point. He is the famous mastermind behind the siege of the Grand Mosque of Mecca in 1979. He was forwarding the concept that his brother-in-law was the awaited Mahdi. To do so — amongst other things — he attempted to fulfill some of the “signs of the Last Hour” mentioned in Hadith. Juhayman and 67 of his followers were (after being captured) summarily executed.

What we are really seeing from Glenn Beck and the Christian Right crowd that he is pandering to with these insane antics is a classic case of PROJECTION. It is in fact many in the Christian Right who believe that the End Times, the Last Days can be hastened. They actually believe they have a role in bringing Jesus Christ back to Earth!

One of the violent consequences of this disastrous theology is that they believe the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque must be destroyed and the Third Jewish Temple be built for Jesus to return to earth. Imagine the repercussions if they are successful in this mad dash to instigate cataclysm?

The one piece of evidence that Islamophobes, Beck and his ilk use to try to instill fear in the populace is their de-contextualized recital of a hadith (saying of the Prophet Muhammad) and its variations that says, ‘the Last Day will not arrive until the Jews fight the Muslims and the Muslims defeat them.’

Beck and company want to pass off and interpret these ahadith as somehow calling for a hastening of the End Times. Not only is this interpretation antithetical to Islamic creed, not only is it an interpretation NEVER forwarded in the 1400 years of Islamic history by any of the hadith commentators (I have Fath al-Bari by Imam Ibn Hajar al-’Asqalani, Sharh Sahih Muslim by Imam Nawawi, and other commentaries open in front of me right now), but it exposes a profound and disgustingly immense historical amnesia.

Why wouldn’t Muslims over the course of 1400 years, at a time when Christian Europe was murdering and enslaving Jews under the doctrine of Perpetual Servitude have exterminated Jews if Beck and his cohorts are right? Why were Jews thriving in the Muslim world? Why were they being appointed as Viziers, Advisors, Diplomats, Physicians to the Caliphs, Sultans and Amirs? Why was the Golden Age of Jewish thought and culture, the revivification of Hebrew (a previously near dead language) in lands ruled by Muslims? (I am currently writing a book review for LW on The Oranament of the World by Maria Rosa Menocal).

No doubt these ahadith have been used in a bellicose and bigoted manner over the past 80 or so odd years due to the political situation in the Middle East, i.e. the conflict between the creation of Israel and occupation and repression of Palestinians. But can the anti-Muslims who forward the claim that Muslims are using these ahadith to hasten the End Times bring one shred of evidence in which these ahadith have been used to instigate or incite pogroms or to usher in the Last Days over the last 1400 years? Maybe Bernard Lewis can help in this regard?

What Beck and co. are saying would be laughable if it weren’t for the fact that it was so dangerous. Some nut or group of nuts is going to see his show and start arming himself against the evil Mooslims and think to himself that he has to get the Mooslims before they get him.

  • Skhan

Glenn Beck is just…wow. Claiming that our hero is the Christian Anti-Christ? That’s the oldest trick in the book! LITERALLY! Medieval Europeans used to think that we worshipped Lucifer, Apollo, “Mahomet” (Muhammad) and some chap called Termagant! They used this as an excuse to hate us silly infidel Muslims. What Glenn Beck is doing is nothing new.

From the Sunni Point of view:
Near the end of times, Muslims believe that a man shall be born in the Middle East. He will have one eye, will promote nothing but evil, and he will have “Kafir” written on his head. He will be the Dar-Jaal (Anti-Christ). The Anti-Christ will spread his evil throughout the world. He will have supernatural powers, destroy entire cities, and kill millions of people. He will do so for 7 years. But then, a man will be born. He will be an Arab of Muhammad’s (pbuh) tribe. His name will be Muhammad, his father’s name will be Abdullah, and he will be known as The Mahdi (The One Who Is Rightly Guided). He will fight against the Anti-Christ and will bring glad tidings of the coming of Jesus (pbuh).

Glenn Beck is a cukoo bird
Jesus & Imam Mahdi will bring ~PEACE~ to the world together <3 so how on earth could he be the antichrist??
And btw the only way we can help him come sooner is if we pray to Allah to make him come sooner, besides doing good deeds, I.e. charity, kindess to orphans, etc. I guess Glenn is afraid our prayers will be answered ;P I wonder what Jesus would tell him…

…and, of course, such as the Hojjatieh Society entirely forget Imam ‘Ali’s injunction:

Loving one another is half of wisdom.

    Khoda hafiz.

The over-abused and often misappropriated expression “clerical fascism’ fits this bunch of murderous lunatics to the tee, incidentally.

I wrote about the Hojjatieh Society a few years ago. The article can be found here:

Ah Yazdi, from Yazd, my bad.

Awesome! A senior (presumably) Itha ‘Ashari Shi’a cleric called Yazid. Never thought I’d hear/see that.

Beck’s deranged view that most Iranians are not Twelver Shi’a (but Ahmadinejad is) is actually quite revealing.

Nearly all Iranians are, in fact (as eny ful no) Twelver Shi’a; and so is Ahmadinejad. So, the question is what exactly is Beck raving about?

The key is his claim that Twelvers were banned by the (Twelver) Ayatollah Khomeini. This is, of course, utter lunacy. However, as with all myths (however utterly mental) there is a grain of truth.

An exceptionally mad and very dangerous millenarian cult emerged in the Shi’a holy city of Qom in the 1950s. This group, the Hojjatieh Society, effectively believes (as with other lunatic messianic death cults of many other religions) that the End of Days must be bought about through the actions of the cult’s followers.

As Shi’a believe that the return of the Hidden Imam will be preceded by extreme human misery – and the return of the Twelve Imam out of Occlusion is the key to the eschatology of Shi’a Islam, his reappearance unlocks the course of events that leads to the Day of Judgement – just so, the Hojjatieh Society has used any and all situations and contexts to encourage exactly the human suffering they believe will bring on the return of the Awaited One, the Hidden Imam. As a result, the Hojjatieh Society worked *with* the Shah’s secret police (SAVAK) against the rising revolutionary tide – and subsequently sought to maintain the chaos of the early days of the revolution: all to maximise human suffering, the key -as they saw it – tot he return of the Hidden Imam, and thus unlock the door to the Day of Judgement.

As a result of their addiction to chaos, social disorder and general mayhem, Ayatollah Khomeini banned the Hojjatieh Society soon after his assumption of power. However, they continued to infiltrate every pore of the revolutionary regime – and were unbanned soon after Khomeini’s death.

What has this to do with Beck? Well, Ahmadinejad’s spiritual mentor is an extremely powerful, utterly barking mad and very dangerous cleric called Yazid – who happens to be, allegedly, the supreme leader of… you guessed it: the Hojjateih Society.

Glen Beck – living proof that a little knowledge entirely misunderstood makes one a dangerous fool – but a fool nonetheless.

I just watched the video and it is just, wow, insane propaganda. I would love to have a full reference list for all the points on that blackboard, together with commentary from various (legitimate) scholars of the past and present.

I was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness so I can say that I have heard my fair share of stuff about Armageddon and such. In 1975 a lot of Witnesses were selling their homes because they thought Armageddon (end of the world) was imminent. My step father almost fell for it as well. Fortunately he kept his house and we did not have to live in a trailer! Just before my step father died a few years ago he said to me “You know, I wasted thirty five years of my life worrying about Armageddon”. It took a lot of courage for him to say that. So after hearing about Armageddon for most of my life, if someone starts talking to me about Armageddon I respond: “Armageddon outta here!”

  • islamispeace

    @NassirH

You may be right that Sunnis do not talk about the Mahdi as much as Shias. That still does not mean that it is not an important issue. There have been many people throughout history who have claimed to be the Mahdi. They were not all Shias. This shows that the concept is present in Sunni Islam as well and many people are waiting for his arrival. Otherwise, why would there be so many claimants?

Glenn Beck and his false interpretation: Al-Mahdi is the Anti-christ

Promoting hatred and scorn for Islam and Muslims has become the only socially and legally acceptable modern prejudice. nowadays, hired writers can make a prestigious living by slandering Islam and humiliating Muslims. These writers are heavily financed by Christian and Jewish organizations known by their enmity to Islam, like some in the mainstream media, political organizations and Christian and Jewish groups. Not a week goes by without biased articles slandering Islam and describing it with backwardness and terrorism. The so-called specialist writers, semi-academics or rightwing propagandists, though ignorant about Islam, they deliberately misinform and misguide their readers by spreading outright lies.

It is hardly surprising that since the demise of the Sovier Empire, “The World of Islam” is being seen as the “New Enemy”.

The Christian coalition wants to make sure that the successive American administrations see the struggle in the Middle East between Jews and Muslims their way – the Christian way. American Christian Zionists say they are now more important source of support for Israel than American Jews or the traditional Jewish lobby. They donate Israel billions of dollars each year to build Jewish settelments on the Palestinian land to help gathering all the Jews in one place before their annihilation in Armageddon battle. In order to build the new settlements, the Israelis demolish the houses of the Palestinians, put them in camps and steel their land. When the Palestinians try to get their land back, they are murdered without distinguishing the old from the young, men from women, boys from girls.

Why the Christian right wing or the Christian coalition love Israel so much? The return of the Jews to their ancient homeland is seen by the Evangelicals as a pre-condition for the second coming of Christ! They have seen it all before in the pages of the bible!

The plot is ripped from the pages of the Bible, so it all winds up here in Israel where, according to the Book of Revelations, the final battle in the history of the future will be fought on an ancient battle field in northern Israel called Armageddon.

And what about the Jews? Two thirds of them will have been wiped out by now but the survivors will accept Jesus at last.

Gershom Gorenberg the author of the “End of Days” a book about those Christian Evanglicals who choose to read the Bible literally said, “They don’t love real Jewish people. They love us as characters in their story, in their play, and that’s not who we are, and we never auditioned for that part, and the play is not one that ends up good for us. If you look at the drama they are describing, essentially it is a five-act play in which the Jews disappear in the fourth act.”

The use of the Bible to predict the end of the world constitute an abuse of scripture. The message that the Christian fundamentalists derive from scripture through their perverted reading is one of the cruel vindictiveness against the vast majority of human race. Palestinians are also humanbeings and have the right to live freely on their land. But now the hands of the Israelis and the Christian fundamentalists financially supporting them, are stained with the Palestinian blood. The followers of Moses and the followers of Jesus have violated the teachings of the Torah and the teachings of the gospel by sharing in the murder of the innocent Palestinians under the pretext of enhancing the second coming of Jesus and the approach of the battle of Armageddon. They simply push back their timetables when the foretold events do not occur, then persist in vanquishing the Palestinians until the prophesies are fulfilled! Would Christ in his second coming accept to inaugurate an era of universal peace based on Palestinian expulsion and Palestinian bloodshed?

Christianity has never been immune from error in apocalyptic teachings that have continually led Christians astray. These errors of understanding had become so rooted into Christian thinking as to constitute an effective delusion in the church thus shaking its credibility before the world. Since the beginning of Christianity and many fundamental ministers are setting dates for the end of the world. The past two millenniums are full of failed prophetic predictions. Starting from 50 C.E. until the year 1999, there is 40 dates proposed so far. They all claimed that the end will come in their time! The fundamental ministers misread the biblical verses and forced them into meanings serving their preconceived notions. They pre-determined what God would do in the future. Date setters making irresponsible predictions, follow nothing but conjecture and usually mislead the masses.

The fundamental Christians even thought they were helping God by hastening the second coming of Christ! Is God so weak and helpless as to seek help from His servants, and He is the One whose command, when He desires a thing, is only to say to it, “Be” and it is?

Is their God as cruel and unjust as to accept help based on crimes of expulsion, bloodshed, racism and genocide! Is their God as racist and reckless as to accept only Christians to dwell in heaven while the rest of His human creation is to be thrown in Hell!

Is this how the Christian right works for its salvation? By considering all Palestine a conclusive home for Israel and to hell with all the Palestinians, the original inhabitants of the land? The Christian right should have realized that by blindly supporting the Israeli aggression against the Palestinians, had entered into the circle of injustice. Their hands are now stained with the Palestinian blood and their conscious became burdened with the crimes of murder and expulsion. They must be wise enough to protect themselves in the Hereafter from chains, and a raging Fire prepared for the evildoers.

Going back to Glenn Beck and his false claim that “Al-Mahdi is the anti-Christ”, I expalin here that the Holy Prophet Muhammad has prophesied several events that will occur just before the advent of the Day of judgment. Among those, the Prophet has foretold the advent of one of his descendants, Al Mahdi (the rightly guided one), which will materialize when Muslim believers are severely oppressed in every corner of the world. He will fight the oppressors, unite the Muslims, bring peace and justice to the world, rule over the Arabs, and lead a prayer in Makkah at which Isa (Jesus) son of Mary will be present.

The following are the collection of authentic Hadith (sayings of the Prophet) regarding Al Mahdi:

“The world will not come to pass until a man from among my family, whose name will be my name, rules over the Arabs.”

“The promised Mahdi will be aqmong my family. Allah will make the provisions for his emergence within a single night.”

“The Mahdi will be of my family, of the descendants of Fatima (the Prophet’s daughter).”

“Our Mahdi will have a broad forehead and a pointed (prominent) nose. He will fill the earth with justice as it is filled with injustice and tyranny. He will rule for seven years.”

“What would be your reaction when the son of Mary (Jesus) descends and your Imam (leader, meaning Al-Mahdi) is from among yourselves?”

When Jesus descends to earth in his second coming, he will find Al Mahdi leading a prayer with a Muslim congregation praying behind him. Al Mahdi will recognize him and asks him to lead the prayers, but Jesus will decline and prays behind Al mahdi. In this regard the Prophet said:

“A group of my Ummah (nation) will fight for the truth until the Day of Judgment when Jesus, the son of Mary, will descend, and the leader of them (Al Mahdi) will ask him to lead the prayer, but Jesus declines, saying, ‘No, verily, among you Allah has made leaders for others and He has bestowed His bounty upon them.”

According to these reliable authentic narrations of the Prophet, Al Mahdi will be characterized by: 1)be from among the family of Prophet Muhammad, among the descendants of Fatima; 2)have a broad head and pointed nose; 3)appear in one night; 4)appear just before the Day of Judgment; 5)have the same name of the Prophet Muhammad; 6)escape from Madina to Makka where people will pledge allegiance to him; 7)receive pledge and help of Iraqi people; 8)fight in battles; 9)rule over the Arabs for 7 years; 10)spread justice and equity on earth; 11)eradicate tyranny and oppression; 12)lead a prayer in Makka which Jesus will follow in; 13)Al Mahdi is not the promised Messiah (Jesus).

Prophet Muhammad known as the truthful and trusworthy also talked about anti-Christ and the second coming of Jesus:

“The anti-Christ will be a young man with twisted hair, and swollen eye. I compare him to Abdul Uzza ibn Qatan. That of you, will survive to see him, should recite over him the opening verses of surat Al-Kahf. He will appear on the way between Syria and Iraq and will spread mischief right and left. O! Servants of Allah! Adhere to the path of truth. He will stay on the earth for forty days. One day like a year and one day like a month and one day like a week and the rest of the days will be like your days. He will walk upon the earth like a cloud driven by the wind. He will come to the people and invite them to the wrong religion and they will believe in him and respond to him. He will then give command to the sky and there will be rainfall upon the earth and he will then command the earth to grow verdant vegetation. Then in the evening the pasturing animals of the people will come to them with their humps very high and their udders full of milk and their flanks stretched. He will then come to other people and invite them to his false religion. But they will reject him and he will go away from them, and the drought will befall them and nothing will be left within the form of wealth. He would then walk through the waste land and say to it: ‘Bring forth your treasures, and the treasures will come cut and collect themselves before him like the swarms of bees. He will then call a person brimming with youth and strike him with the sword and cut him into two pieces and make these pieces lie at a distance which is generally between the archer and his target. He will then call that young man, and he will come laughing, with his face gleaming out of joy and it will at this very time that Allah will send Jesus, son of Mary, and he will descend at the white Minaret in the eastern side of Damascus, wearing two garments lightly dyed with saffron and placing his hands on the wings of two angels. When he will lower his head, there will fall drops of perspiration like pearls from his head, and when he will raise it up, drops like pearls will scatter from it. Every non-believer who will smell his odor will die and his breath will reach as far as he will be able to see. He will then search for the anti-Christ until he will catch hold of him at the gate of Ludd, and will kill him. Then the people whom Allah have protected will come to Jesus, son of Mary, and he will wipe their faces and will inform them of their ranks in Paradise and it will be under such conditions that Allah will reveal to Jesus these words: ‘I have brought forth from amongst My servants such people against whom none will be able to fight; you take these people safely to the mountain Tur.” And then Allah will send Yagog and Magog and they will swarm down from every slope. The first of them will pass the lake of the sea Tabariah and drink out of it. And when the l;ast of them will pass will say: “There was once water there.” The Prophet of Allah, Jesus and his companions will then be besieged at Tur and they will be so much hard pressed that the head of the ox will be dearer to them than one hundred dinars and Jesus along with his companions will make supplications to Allah Who will send to the people of Yagog and Magog insects which will attack their necks and in the morning they will perish like a single person. Allah’s Apostle, Jesus and his companions will then come down to the earth and they will not find in the earth as much space as a single span which is not filled with their corps and their stink. Allah’s Apostle, Jesus and his companions will then again beseech Allah Who would send birds whose necks, will be like those of camels and they will carry them and throw them where Allah will desire. Then Allah will send rain which will spare no house of clay or tent. It will wash away the earth until it will appear like a mirror. Then the earth will be told to bring forth its fruit and restore its blessings and as a result of it there will grow such a big pome granate that a group of persons will be able to eat that hardly and seek shelter under its skin. The cow will give so much milk, that a whole party will be able to drink it. The camel will give such large quantity of milk that the whole tribe will be able to drink out of that, and that time Allah will send a pleasant wind which will soothe people even under their armpits, and will take the life of every Muslim and only the wicked people will survive. They will commit adultery like asses and upon them the Hour will be held.”

In this respect it is worth mentioning that Jesus, the son of Mary will rule over people with the Koran, the only divine Book guarded by Allah until the Day of Resurrection. He will rule for approximately 40 years after which he will be buried beside Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam (the religion of all Prophets)in Medina.

Just to add that in shia islam there are 6 stages God designed for the world. Right now we are in stage 3 (the revelation of Al-Islam) and in stage 4 (the messianic stage) when the Imam Mehdi (as) appears shall begin the implementation of Al-Islam the world over

The Imami government shall commence only when mankind is at its worst. This is so that when it becomes manifest mankind will attribute its fruits to the works of God and not individual accomplishment

Also our prophecies state it the Imami government shall commence only after all groups of people with all sorts of political models in mind have had the chance to rule and fail. So that when the Imami government begins none shall be able to say had they been given the chance they too could have ruled with equal justice.

While there are many signs to warn us, at the end of the day what matters is the supreme sign. Which is universal revelation. When the time of the Imami government begins, Jibrael (as) shall speak to all people letting them know who the Qaim is and how to follow him. Our prophecies warn us that anyone who claims to be the Qaim before this universal revelation is a liar and must be rejected

Both Sunnis and Shias expect the Mahdi, but for 12-er Shias he has been born already, we know some things about him, and he is in occultation but has had some interaction with the world.

  • NassirH

    Islamispeace:

I have to disagree. It seems to me that Garibaldi is correct in saying that the Mahfi is central to Shia’ Eschatology while not as important in the Sunni version of events. I rarely hear Sunnis mention the Mahdi and when they do, it’s usually in reference to Shia’ belief.

    @Garibaldi

The concept of the Mahdi is indeed an important one in Sunni Islam as well. It may not get as much attention but that does not mean it is not important. One reason it may not be mentioned in many Friday khutbahs is because there are other issues which are concerned with the present, and not the future. The future is not in our control but the present is. So, that is why many imams would rather talk about things like controlling one’s anger or showing mercy or giving charity as these are important issues which have applications in our daily lives.

    By they way, great article!
