CNN Special: “Unwelcome: The Muslim Next Door”

Soledad O’Brien had a very interesting special that aired on Sunday, March 27th dealing with the rise of anti-Muslim bigotry in America, specifically the case of the Murfreesboro Mosque and Community Center.

We have covered this story extensively, Eric Allen Bell a close follower of the issue and of LoonWatch has sent us video and tips regarding what has been going on and the morbid ignorance of the Islamophobes in that area.

Soledad did a decent job and all in all the Islamophobes and Muslim-haters come out looking quite malicious if not profoundly ignorant.

We have uploaded the videos to Youtube, please subscribe to our YouTube page LoonwatchTV

Response to Part 2 of the CNN “Special”:
2:19-2:23 “Some people feel like ‘your a traitor,
how could you become one of ‘them’?'”
This is abhorrent behavior towards a Muslim, whether they are American or not.
3:11-3:14 “I think that the public has a right
to say ‘wait a minute, there’s concerns here.”
Curious. Why are you excluding the Muslims from this “public”? Why hold bigoted marches instead of sharing your concerns with each other to reach a resolve?
3:51-3:53 “So you have people drawing off the same source, so
according to their tradition they don’t bury with the casket.”
There are odd “traditions” throughout the entire world, it’s not an exclusively Muslim phenomenon. Just like terrorism isn’t exclusive too any single group. Besides, I’m unfamiliar with why burying the corpse as is without the stress of extra expenses for a coffin would be a problem. Do you think Communism comes in fluoridated water too? Can you prove Muslim remains in water does harm to human health in general over Non-Muslim remains? No? then it’s not a problem. Get over it.
    4:02 “they could, absolutely.”
Too bad you don’t have evidence, and it’s just a possible. I “could” also contaminate your water with my atheism according to your conspiracy against Muslims leaving a dead member of their community buried in a cemetery. Would that be better or worse? just because something “could” happen, doesn’t mean that’s what did happen.
8:27 “it don’t mean your going to come in
here and do this in Murfreesboro county.”
So freedom of religion is only good if it serves the purpose of
your particular religion or religious zeal? I don’t think so.

Responde to Part 3 of the CNN “Special”:
1:10-1:13 “I’m told that ‘they do that everywhere they
go, to make people think everybody’s against us.'”
So you just believe whatever rumor pops up without questioning whoever tells you it? wow. I hid a emerald dragon that recently converted to Islam in your kitchen, and he’s going to eat all your dishes and silverware. Why don’t you believe me? I’m telling you something without evidence. I thought you liked that kind of thing.
3:16-3:17 “a lot of people stand with me.”
This fallacy is called the appeal to popularity. A lot
of people are bigots, that doesn’t make them right.
3:22-3:27 “I don’t understand why you all are not outraged
with the rights of children and females under Sharia law.”
Is this your strawman version of “Sharia law”?
probably, there seems to be a lot of those.
4:17-4:24 “the lawsuit is simply to seek an investigation of this group to find out exactly where this group stands and whether it opposes any kind of risks to the community.”
You can ask the group where it stands, that doesn’t require a lawsuit. Did you see them destroy projects for new churches in your county or file lawsuits against future churches? clearly, there is no “risk” of them to your bigoted “community.” Stop being so paranoid. The Muslim community in your respective county needs more room, there’s nothing wrong with that.
6:26-6:33 “this organization is presenting themselves as a peace loving organization, in actuality some of their leadership is radical.”
Even if the “leadership” is radical, that doesn’t mean the congregation is. Israel has presented itself as a “peace loving” entity under UN Resolution 273* but has a record of human rights and international law violations** (evidence contrary to a “peace loving” organization). Why does a Muslim American community and their planned Mosque (amongst other buildings) give you so many red flags, but this doesn’t? maybe you could re-evaluate your stance on Muslims and Islam in general – it won’t kill you.
Article 1690 defines Israel as a terrorist entity
    **http://www.roytov.com/downloads/UNFFMGC_Report.pdf
6:32-6:37 “I think every law-abiding citizen in the United
States of America should stand up against Sharia law.”
It’s too bad your not so vigilante about other laws and even bills
passed by Congress against the law abiding citizens of America.
8:54-8:59 “why would we extend to any religion the right to
cancel out the Constitution for which were founded upon.”
America wasn’t founded upon the Constitution, it was written years after the “founding.” Could at least get your history right. Yes, why any religion? including yours, pal. Constitutional Republic doesn’t equate Theocracy of any brand.

    @mindy1,
Since you are Jewish, I hope you know my criticism of Israel doesn’t mean I have anything against adherents to Judaism. 🙂

    @jacque
Apology accepted, hopefully we won’t have a rehearsal of that in the future. Well I’m not a troll either, so we’re in the same boat. I’d feel better if you didn’t treat me like someone I’m not. I asked you politely and maturely to stop pestering me, I wasn’t whining like a baby.

    muhammad ‘abd-al haqq and Khushboo:
I’ll return with commentary on 2 and
    3. 4, like 1, will be separate.

    Take care all,

  • AJ

I think jacque got confused by the first post, I was too where it seemed that the comment from youtube was the comment by Demiprist but I knew Demiprist was one of the good guys 🙂 so I thought maybe he/she was just temporarily irritated by LW or something.

  • Farberry

I would love to see a clip or an entire episode by Dave Chappelle, him being Kevin Fischer.. Anyone remember Clayton Bigsby Clip from the south.

  • Khushboo

Good one Demiprist! Looking forward to part 2.

  • That Soledad O’brien is an interesting woman. She seems to have an equal amount of disdain for Islam and anti-Muslim bigots. I guess that is typical of “lefties” who don’t particularly like Islam, but will defend to the death our right to practice Islam? I don’t know.

  • TheDemiprist,

I don’t know why jacque keeps messing with you. Your responses were well worth the wait. 🙂

    “3:37 “it’s like we can’t say it”
..it’s like, you can’t be bigoted. Imagine that.”

    Awesome

    @Demiprist:

I apologize to you. My wife is in Pakistan for two months and I’m just having fun. I would like to say that I do not troll. Most of my posts add to the discussion at hand. Please do not be offended at my comments.

Before I go, let me try to make you feel better. Let me pinch your chubby cheeks. Koochee koochee koochee koo. Koochee koochee koochee koo. Feeling better now???

  • TheDemiprist

    @jacque,
I can count how many comments I’ve made and read what I’ve said, I don’t need anyone’s help with that. I already explained the reasoning behind my first comment for you. Please leave me alone.

Response to Part 1 of the CNN “Special”:
0:14-0:16 “I didn’t say I hate them, I just said we don’t need them here.”
Who is he to dictate who needs to be in America or not?
0:18-0:19 “everybody knows whose trying to kill us.”
I think the oil whores, merchants of death, and robber barons qualify.
0:44-0:48 “we have filed a lawsuit to stop the building of the mosque.”
How would you like it if we started filing
lawsuits against the building of churches?
    3:37 “it’s like we can’t say it”
..it’s like, you can’t be bigoted. Imagine that.
3:43-3:49 “our country was founded through the Founding Fathers,
through the True God, The Father and Jesus Christ.”
I disagree, and that’s no reason to ban the religious freedom of others.
3:51-3:53 “they seem to be against what I believe in.”
and you seem to be against what I believe in: tolerance and coexistence.
3:53-3:56 “So, I don’t want them necessarily in my neighborhood.”
Reality doesn’t exist to serve you, they
are your neighbors – live with it.
4:27-4:29 “under Sharia law there is no freedom of speech.”
    [citation needed].
5:08-5:11 “I wanted to show my interest in community, in my country.”
So you join a march of bigotry? That’s a poor decision out of all your options as an American citizen. You could have just as easily reached out too the Muslim community in your county.
6:10-6:13 “they worship another God than the one I worship.”
How do you know? Does a Christian from a different denomination and theology also worship a different God from yours? probably, but I don’t see you complaining about that.
6:38-6:42 “it is not Christians, it is not the
Jews that flew airplanes into buildings.”
Would you be equally upset with them if it was Christians or Jews? Why put so much pressure on Muslims that had nothing to do with it?
6:58-7:00 “the next thing you know, their
going to be taking over the city council.”
One council out of how many in The States? slippery slope fallacy.
7:19-7:23 “Post 9/11 would we should be suspicious
of any group trying to relocate to this community.”
What makes Post 9/11 so special? Your “community” is a bunch of paranoid bigots and anyone that disagrees or is different isn’t welcome? that’s not my kind of community at all.
    8:48 “read the Quran!”
Good advice, for yourself. No cherry picking.
9:00 “All it is, is a training center.”
So? Why can Christians have places to
    ‘train’ themselves but Muslims can’t?

  • jacque

    I’m sorry 🙁

  • jacque what gives? The guy said he would respond, he will, stop trying to provoke, get’s us no where. He hasn’t done anything towards you so stop being overly defensive. Yeah, we bet a lot of trolls but he is not one of them 🙂

  • jacque

    @Demiprist: That’s three comments now.

Here is a video of Kevin Fisher, the African American gentleman against the mosque, trying to create something that is not there. It’s called “Kevin Fisher plays the race card.”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgQNOg5PpiA

Does Fisher not realize that the people he is supporting are the same ones who would have told him decades ago to drink from a separate fountain?

  • TheDemiprist

    @jacque,
Stop trolling. I’ll comment on the “Special” on my own time, not on your demand. Please leave me alone, I did nothing to provoke you into being rude towards me.

  • I actually have very mixed feelings about this “Special”. It seemed very contrived. Sure the loons were shown for the hateful Islamophobic bigots they really are, but apart from the 18 year old Muslim young woman refuting(!) an elected official, there really wasn’t any information showing exactly why these loons are wrong. And the interviewer, Soledad O’brien actually breaks form and shows here distaste for Islam at the end of, I think, video 3, where she says to the young Sbenaty girl “don’t you think it’s understandable why they would fear you[Muslims](something to that effect,I don’t remember the exact words).

All of these “specials” seem predicated on showing America that real Americans will stand for freedom of speech and freedom of religion, yet none of them actually critically addresses WHY the Islamophobes are so wrong. I guess that would just be too much to ask for, but in the end it just seems like an attempt to show Americans are really good people, while denying people proper exposure to Islam, for what I think must be a real fear of conversion. Tell the truth about Islam and who knows what will happen, right? the loons think telling the truth about Islam will eventually eradicate it, yet they constantly lie about Islam. What do the the non-loons think will happen if the truth is tlod about Islam 🙂 To me that just feeds the same narrative of the loons from a different perspective. They seem to be saying:

“Why the fear about about Islam and Muslims, they are only 2% of the population anyway, they aren’t trying to take over America, or implement Shari’ah Law by trashing the US constitution?”

Yet the lack of authentic Islamic information and rebuttals of Islamophobes being mainstreamed suggests they might also believe:

“But if the Muslim populations does grow, then we would have something to worry about”.

Alot of the same people who support Muslims on the basis of religious freedom, oppose Latino immigration. There still is alot of American exceptionalism and culturalist prejudice going around.

I guess I just find it hard to trust mainstream media. One thing I will say though:

    140 Churches in a town of 140,000+
1 Masjid that wants to expand to better serve the needs of the community.
1 Masjid! Met with fierce opposition. This isn’t about just Ground Zero.
If that’s not Islamophobia then the term really has no meaningful value.

    Allahu A’lam

    @mindy1
New things regarding the story have come out like

    # Rolling Stone reveals how U.S. troops murdered Afghan civilians
    # Soldiers cut off 15-year-old boy’s finger and kept it as trophy
    # Video captures U.S. troops cheering as airstrike kills two Afghan civilians
    # New pictures show dead Afghan man’s head on a stick
    # Soldier stabbed the body of a dead Afghan civilian
    # Military tried to pull pictures out of circulation to avoid another Abu Ghraib
    # Army says photos are ‘in striking contrast’ to its standards and values

    http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-kill-team-20110327

I am asking them to do a follow up because these updates reveal very important insight into the story and reveal a even more tragic story than found in the previous articles

You sound like a typical, politically correct, Islamofascist, gardian reading, liberal nazi. And after John delivers that crushing argument he departs never to be seen again. I mean was he being serious? That non-argument is as bad as when they say the soros whitehousd. They’re really that stupid they think they win arguements that way. That said let me be a little un-pc. John sounds like a typical fox news watching, comicbook reading, nose-picking, fascist redneck.

    1. You stated, “You think I was just going to leave that as my only comment and say nothing about the “Special”.”

You have now left two comments and have not stated anything about the “Special”.

I never stated you were trying to cause problems.

Now please go watch the “Special”, so you can comment on the “Special”.

    @jacque,
I left a response to a comment that was given towards LoonwatchTV’s YT channel, something I felt needed to be addressed. I wasn’t trying to change the topic at all. You think I was just going to leave that as my only comment and say nothing about the “Special”? oh please. I’ll come back too it after I’ve watched the “Special” and comment on it as necessary. No reason to say I’m here to cause problems for the LW community, I like this site a lot and like providing whatever help I can.

  • TRELON

I love how people like John only focus on child abuse when its done by Muslims.

I strongly condemn the events that were shown on the Dispatches documentary.

Having said that, child abuse is universal and statistics show that there are hundreds of cases of child abuse occuring at regular public and private schools.

    Get your priorities straight.

  • Mosizzle

“In any case you sound like a typical politically correct islamofacist Guardian reading liberal nazi”

Calling me a Nazi already? You must be seriously desperate. By the way, could you define what a “liberal Nazi” is? Or are you unsure about the crap you just mumbled.

“I said in a church – building – the video wasn’t filmed in a church it looked like a loony bin (hey there was a green background – could have been in a mosque).”

Wow. So you think that the pastor who burned the Quran was filming his lame video in a mosque?

Why don’t you just have some beers with your imaginary Muslim friends.

  • Dan

Didn’t realize John was a troll. Carry on.

  • Mosizzle

To be honest, I think John knew that alcohol was forbidden for Muslims and was trying to be funny. If he wasn’t, then he’s quite ignorant about a faith that he is so eager to criticise.

And yes that was a shocking incident at the mosque and Channel 4 did a good job exposing that hateful Imam who was also caught beating the pupils. But of course, right-wing anti-Muslim haters in Britain found that to be a good excuse to call for the banning of all Muslim education in Britain.

One can find plenty of racism amongst Churches and evangelical Christians as well. So it’s just pointless for John trying to argue that all Mosques are racist and there are absolutely no incidents of racism in Churches whatsoever.

  • John

As for racist Churches, I wanted to post this:
    http://www.loonwatch.com/2010/09/pastor-who-wants-to-burn-korans-uses-n-word/

I said in a church – building – the video wasn’t filmed in a church it looked like a loony bin (hey there was a green background – could have been in a mosque).

In any case you sound like a typical politically correct islamofacist Guardian reading liberal nazi: the video had an anti-racist theme, not expressed in a very elegant way and a bit politically incorrect (the guy in the white T-shirt had obviously forgotten to take his pills).
