Bulgarian National Radio Goes Off Air as Far-right Leader Clashes with Political Opponent

Bulgarian National Radio goes off air as far-right leader clashes with political opponent

A Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) talk show about the May 20 clash between Ataka and Muslims outside Sofia’s Banya Bashi mosque went off air for some minutes after Ataka leader Volen Siderov and independent MP Korman Ismailov clashed in the studio.

The broadcast of the Nedelya 150 programme on May 22 was replaced by music for about five minutes after matters became heated, with Siderov telling Ismailov: “you are bearers of radical Islam. You are bearers of extremism. You are a danger to the entire Europe”.

There has been widespread condemnation of Ataka for the May 20 incident which led to injuries and arrests after ultra-nationalists protesting against the use of loudspeakers to relay the call to prayer got into a fight with Muslims outside the mosque.

BNR’s Velichko Konakchiev told Bulgarian National Television that Siderov had started the clash with Ismailov, who said that the Ataka leader was ruining Bulgaria’s image. Ismailov said that people at the mosque had simply been defending themselves against assaults by Ataka supporters.

Siderov said that there should be a stop to hypocritical statements about ethnic peace when Sofia’s city was a “nest of Islamists”. It was a mistake to turn a blind eye and it would be too late, according to Siderov, “when one of them blows up the underground railway in Sofia”.

Bulgarian media reported that an online petition had been launched to ask Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev to request Parliament to vote to lift Siderov’s immunity as an MP from prosecution, while in response to an online campaign, people have been visiting Banya Bashi to lay flowers in a gesture of apology to Bulgaria’s Muslims for the May 20 incident.

BNR director-general Valeri Todorov said in a statement that it was unacceptable for the airwaves of the country’s public broadcaster to be used to incite ethnic, religious and national animosities.

@Gyula But I’d bet you don’t have a problem with Christianity abducting people (some of whom were Muslims) and forcing them into slavery by European countries for centuries…

@bohsgerry WTF did you write? Seems to be a mumble-jumble of mis-spelt words…

  • bohsgerry

well done bulgaria.my country ireland is full of every mix you could think of.if we protested outside a mosque we would be attacked by the mohammedans and slagged off by the wet vest liberals and media.irish people have no rights.overrun by roma and sinti gypsies from rumania and bosnia and slovakia, togolese, nigerians, and keynans, chinese and mauritians.no wonder skinheads are making ANOTHER comeback.we have lithunian gangs here petrol bombing police and togolese mugging irish people every day.ridiculous.dont let it happen bulgaria, well done!!!!!

  • Gyula

George Carty: “I can at least understand where Bulgarian Islamophobes are coming from. The country was part of the Ottoman Empire for about 500 years, and by the end was almost half-Muslim (they were ethnically cleansed after the Russians created independent Bulgaria after their victory in 1877). Perhaps they’re worried that the Muslims want payback…”

What payback are you talking about you ignorant American muslim supporter ape? You know nothing about the history of this land and its neighborhood. The peoples of Balkans were oppressed and sold as slaves by muslims for many centuries, Christian children were abducted. Bulgarians are right that they do not want muslim scum in their own country, their original religion was Orthodox christianity before muslim occupation, and if muslims were killed of by Russians, well THAT was payback to the muslim-turkish slavedrivers, rapists and agressors and they will get more! Greetings from Hungary moron! Islam has no place in Europe!

See dan, my point in comparing you to Siderov was not an attempt to play the “victim” card. Siderov, had to resort to physical violence because he knew he lost the argument and had nothing else to add other than his fists. He essentially conceded he lost the argument. Just like how you were unable to back your claims, and thus resorted to ad hominem, personal attacks, and outright lies. But that’s what happens when you show up to a battle of wits totally unarmed. Might wanna take some English reading classes troll.

  • Hatethehaterz

Speaking of idiotic theories, dan, what’s wrong with you now? Are you talking to the voices in your head again? When did I say “America is horrible?” Since when is speaking out against Islamophobia, hatred, and bigotry, equal to “hating America?” When did I write of any “Islamic utopias?” I never said any of those things. Lol, you’re nuttier than a snicker’s bar. And you still haven’t provided any evidence for your ridiculous claims whatsoever. Least of all the things you claim I said – such as the negative things against the west and America. If you hate Muslims so much, why don’t you go to Antarctica? There’s no evil “Mozlems” there. I’m not a convert; just like your not a real Muslim. Do you actually have something to add that’s ON TOPIC? Or will you be continuing with the ad hominem and personal attacks and making stuff up?

Btw, I’m not a victim. You on the other hand, are obviously a victim of mental illness lol. And also a troll.

  • Dan

Hatethehaterz comes out again with his stupid theories that always lean heavily on having a victimization mentality.

Hatethehaterz, if America is so horrible and immoral to you, what’s stopping you from making hijrah to that “Islaamic utopia” that you and every other nutty convert that brags about? It would be better for you since you wouldn’t have to be around the pesky “kuffar”, right?

  • Hatethehaterz

@Mindy: I agree. But then, I don’t beleive Dan would fall in the “each other” category (if you were referring to our posts); judging by his use of personal attacks and bigoted insults of wide populations of Muslims. He’s probably just a troll who get’s off on this kind of fitna/stuff. Much like Siderov in the article above.

  • mindy1

If we want to defeat hate we must not turn on each other. Can”t we just agree that extemists of any kind are bad, whether we are talking about the taliban, edl etc… :(

  • Hatethehaterz

@ Dan: I see you still didn’t provide a source for your bigoted claim that Indian Muslims are the most backwards and illiterate religious group in India. You also have not addressed my question as to where I advocated for Bulgaria to be turned into an Islamic state? Or where I am a proponent of the Taliban? Instead you resort to name calling and petty insults. I guess that means you concede you lost the argument. Who’s the “pea-brained retard” now?

Reading comprehension really isn’t your strong point is it? When did I say that criticizing Muslims equals criticizing Islam? I just pointed out that your arguments against Muslims are the same as those used by Islam bashers. Furthermore, I’ve never seen you make a distinction between Islam and practicing Muslims in any of your insane rants. Instead you typically just demonize, stereotype, and generalize wide populations of Muslims (particularly from South Asia I’ve noticed). You seem to be very bigoted against South Asian Muslims. Get rejected by an Indian girl? Don’t worry, I’m sure with your winning personality, and third grade name calling, you can look forward to getting rejected by many other women too.

I see you’re still pretending to be Muslim in the hopes it will lend some credence to your lunatic rants.

Again, your reading comprehension is on par with your juvenile insults – roughly at a third grade level. When did I ever state I would rather live somewhere else? When did I “condemn” any western countries? Are you making this stuff up from the voices in your head again? I disagree with many policies of western countries as well as the current wave of Islamophobia sweeping my country in general. As a citizen I have every right to voice my disagreement. Being a citizen of this country doesn’t mean I have to turn into an uncle tom like Zudhi Jasser or Tarek Fatah and “condemn” and stereotype my co-religionists as “illiterate” or “backwards.”

Are you able to offer any sort of cogent argument other than pathetic, juvenile insults? You need to learn how to read dude.

  • Dan

Hatethehaterz, you are nothing but a bumbling idiot. Since when does criticizing Muslims equal criticizing Islam you pea-brained retard?

You are just as stupid as Pamela Geller when you believe in those conspiracy theories. Go back to peddling the “they-hate-cos-I’m-Muslim card” while not having the cojones to point out the fact that in spite of how bad it is here, IT IS STILL INFINITELY TIMES BETTER THAN LIVING IN A MUSLIM COUNTRY.

Unlike you or marco, I can acknowledge that I’d RATHER live in America or in the immoral Western countries that morons like you constantly condemn instead of the Islamic countries that you guys gloat constantly, like a retarded Hizb-ut-Tahrir member often does.

  • Hatethehaterz

@ Dan: “But of course, as we all know, in your own little world, Muslims are incapable of committing oppression against others they don’t like as well.”

This is a favorite topic of Islam-bashers. To point out certain instances of “Muslim oppression” against non-Muslims in Muslim countries. It is irrelevant. I was born and raised in the U.S. I care about the oppression against MY people (Muslims) by the non-Muslims right here (i.e. blocking Mosques from being built, trying to pass legislation to prevent us from practicing our faith, preventing Muslim women from wearing hijab, racial profiling, hate crimes, etc.). I’ve never been to those other countries. I won’t be held accountable for the crimes of other co-religionists half a world away. No Muslims have burned down Churches or temples here. So give it a rest.
