Hijab-Wearing ‘Flash Mob’ Invades RightOnline

(TPM) Evan McMorris-Santoro | June 18, 2011

MINNEAPOLIS — A group of around ten women in Muslim headscarves crashed the RightOnline conference for about ten minutes Saturday, protesting what they said was an incident targeting Muslim women Thursday night.

The event was the latest spark kicked up by the proximity of Netroots Nation and RightOnline. The two conferences are blocks apart — RightOnline is being held in a hotel many Netrootsers are staying in — and interaction between the progressives at Netroots and the conservatives at RightOnline has been inevitable.

A spokesperson for the group of women told TPM they weren’t sure of the identity of the man responsible for the Thursday incident — when two hijab-wearing women were followed by a man with a cell phone camera who reportedly asked them why they were dressed the way they were “in America” — but rumors that the incident involved an employee of conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart were rampant at Netroots.

It was partially a confrontation over those rumors that caused the Breitbart kerfuffle at Netroots Friday.

The women who arrived at RightOnline were Netroots attendees, and were accompanied by blogger Joe Aravosis and gay rights advocate/provocateur Dan Choi.

The spokesperson for the “flash mob,” Allison Nevitt, told TPM that there was a larger message to their protest beyond the Thursday incident, which Nevitt said had been reported to Minneapolis police.

“The point was mostly that Muslim women are an equal part of this nation, and that we have an equal right to exist here,” Nevitt said.

Following that, Nevitt and the rest of the flash mobbers were escorted out of RightOnline by hotel security.

My parents never cared if my sisters or I wore hijab… It makes them happy when we wear it, but never were we forced. I’m more suprised the number of people who try to pull a sisters hijab OFF!! That’s forced!

  • Hatethehaterz

@Frida: They are free; Here in the U.S., and in most Muslim countries as well. There are something like 52 Muslim countries in the world. I only know of two (Saudi Arabia and Iran) which require hijab by law. In fact there are actually more Muslim majority countries which PROHIBIT the wearing of hijab in schools and government buildings (Turkey, Tunisia, Tajikistan). Add to that the non-Muslim countries which have laws AGAINST the wearing of hijab such as France.

Indeed these non-Muslim men are not the bosses of our sisters in Islam either. Since there are more countries (i.e. “men”) PREVENTING sisters who WANT to wear hijab from doing so, perhaps you should change your tune. Women should not be forced to remove the hijab against their will either. If you care so much for our sisters in Islam, maybe you should start advocating for their right to wear hijab.

And why don’t you try actually asking some of the sisters here or at your local Mosque if they are “forced” to wear hijab; instead of jumping to conclusions? You’ll find the vast majority of women wear it of their own free will. None of the women in my family are “forced” to do anything.

these muslim women are forced to wear the hijab because the men in their country rules. But please muslim women don’t be afraid here because you have the right to do what is right for you and dress like everybody else and live your life as you please. These men are not your boss here in this country. Be free….

Women retake islam by kamran pasha

    Nur Alia
there is an amazing article in the huff post religion section about strong minded Muslim women who are academics and indeed scholars who are challenging the worlds perception of Muslim women!
It is well worth a read!

“It’s all right. For their service to the umma, they’ll be stoned to death last.”

And Spencer would be the first to get slapped across the jaw, knocking that stupid beard off his face, if he had the equipment under that fat belly of his to say that to these “oppressed” women…

  • Nur Alia

    To my sisters in Islam..

The next time there is some controversy as to the way we dress, and you get a chance to respond.

    ask this question.

How is it less oppressive to deny or restrict a woman to wear something she might choose, than it is to force her to wear something she doesnt want to?

    All I saw was hair and boobs…. O__o I’m confused….

This part seemed to sum it up the best:

‘…we have an equal right to exist here,” Nevitt said. Following that, Nevitt and the rest of the flash mobbers were escorted out of RightOnline by hotel security.’

Spencer is such a pillock it defies belief. These women who are obviously head strong and independent minded choose to wear the hijab. I don’t think they are the type of sisters who would be forced to wear the hijab! Spencer and his ilk cannot handle that. His tiny brain goes into default attack anything mode!
Good on the sisters and more power to them!

  • Ahmed(was called Anonomous)

    Nice work

  • NassirH

Bobbie Spencer over at his hate site has some nice things to say about these women: “It’s all right. For their service to the umma, they’ll be stoned to death last.”

  • mindy1

    Good on them

  • Khushboo

More power to our Muslim sistas! Good for them! :D
