Dutch mosques defaced 117 times

Between 2005 and 2010 mosques in the Netherlands were defaced 117 times, according to research by social researcher Ineke van der Valk. The acts of vandalism were motivated by a hatred of Islam, the researcher is quoted as saying on VPRO radio programme Argos.

In 43 cases, the mosques were daubed with offensive symbols or slogans. In 37 instances, the mosques sustained material damage. In 99 of the incidents the police failed to find any of the culprits. In the United States there were 42 similar incidents during the same period. Most of the vandalised mosques in the Netherlands are located outside the major cities.

There are some 450 mosques in The Netherlands, which has a population of more than 16.5 million. Some five percent of the population is believed to be Muslim, some 44 percent Christian and over 41 percent agnostic. As a percentage of the population, the Netherlands has Europe’s second-largest Muslim community, inferior only to France, which has a Muslim community of more than nine percent.

Dolphins?! What does that matter?? But yes I have some agreement with you Durendal, we can’t generalize about these attacks. What we can say though is that it is clear that ‘hate’ against Muslims in the Netherlands is on the rise, as evidenced by voting patterns to say the least.

Also, all of your stuff against the author of this report could also be said against pretty much any author of anything. It does however show something, that there are underlying causes.

Personally I think it has a lot to do with ‘guest worker’ programs and the immigrants who came with them not being welcomed into society. That is why for example you see that SE Asian Muslims, who fled to the Netherlands as a result of the Indonesian National Revolution, don’t cause many problems. Most issues come from Turks and other ‘Arab’ groups who came as guest workers. Added to this is the fact that as the guest worker programs started and workers began to move their families over or get citizenship, manufacturing and other industries closed down, causing massive unemployment amongst the new immigrants. The few that were educated found new work quickly or adapted, the rest…. well you can see them now.

Underlying causes to be dealt with here, not the rabble rousing about ‘immigrants’ or ‘Islam’.

I’m also looking into Ineke van der Valk tbe researcher that reported this.And what I’m finding is not particularly encouraging in the sense that she can be considered as objective.She has links with radical left organizations and with Moroccan advocacy groups (she also likes dolphins I dunno but someone is linked with the radical left and Moroccan advocacy groups AND she likes dolphins raises all kinds of alarm bells).Besides the obvious flaws I already noted.I think we have a case of someone preaching for her own parish , someone that has a motive to make it appear as if anti-Islamic violence is on the rise in the Netherlands.

I think one should put question marks with the report.The fact the researcher herself admits that in 99 of the 177 cases of vandalism no culprit was found means we cannot know what motivated the attacks.I would wager that most of the vandalism is unrelated to hatred of Islam but had more to do with neighbor/social tensions.A person might object to anti-social Muslim youth (2/3 of Muslim youth in the Netherlands has a crime record) and take it out on the local mosque.The motivation for the crime was the rowdy Muslim youth in the neighborhood not a particular hatred for Islam.They might also contain racist crimes, which would require some percentile comparison with other years to know if there is a real increase or not.Or if the number of attacks basically remained the same.I do know that in the year Theo van Gogh was murdered the number of attacks on Islamic buildings saw a huge increase (as did attacks on Churches) but it was unusual and didn’t maintain itself.I don’t know of a single Muslim being killed in a hate crime in the past 5-10 years.To place all these 177 cases in the Islamic hatred camp would be like saying all crimes committed by Muslim youth in the Netherlands was motivated by hatred for non-Muslims.You simply can’t generalize like that.

Also – beware of when they say “Muslim community.” Who actually attends mosque and regards themselves as “Muslim” is another question. There is actually more of a Moroccan community, a Turkish community, than a “Muslim community.”

The Netherlands is fat-ripe fruit for a spate of right wing violence and terrorism, like that in Germany and other places. Last October 2010, a bomb (that failed) was placed at another mosque (I don’t recall where). The Netherlands, like Germany, chases after the ghosts of “jihadists and Islamists,” rather than protect all of its communities and populations. There is public apathy that could make violence very acceptable.

The AIVD- national intelligence service is more concerned with Moroccan youth meeting at a park than these attacks and the growing terrorist potential from the right-wing. The Netherlands is a very lost country, lead astray by largely Fortuyn, who hated everything good about the Dutch nation. Fortuyn talked about “Dutchness” and “Dutch values” in vague terms that are actually NOT Dutch values. Most Dutch people could not tell you what it means to be “Dutch.” Being “Dutch” does not involve a certain religious faith and the largest religious denomination is “atheist” or “no faith.”

Yes- most of the country does not have a religious faith!

What is really tragic is that “Islamisation” is a hateful myth that basic research into demographic and social scientific surveys will uncover. What we now have as a result of the phony “Muslim problem” is that some Dutch are not allowed to call themselves “Dutch” even though their native language is the Dutch language and they are full citizens of the country. The term “allochtoon” (non-Western immigrant background) is officially defined and this serves the purpose of dividing ”Dutch” from “non-Dutch.”

Anyone who claims to hate the Dutch tradition of Tolerance hate what it means to be Dutch.

Tolerance is both a Dutch tradition and Dutch value. The Dutch tradition of tolerance sprang out of the old religious pillar system and had the effect of bring some measure of peace out of about 400 years of religious conflicts and persecutions. Anyone who claims to admire Geert Wilders (who claims to be “carrying on for Fortuyn”) is cheering on the destruction of a once great nation that had put religious conflict behind it. Sadly – we may have to witness bloodshed and violence again before both the country and the rest of Europe wake up to what is happening with regard to the radicalization of Dutch and European politics like that of the 1930s.

Muslims do not vandalize their own mosques- to say so is outlandish beyond a doubt.

I am just so sick of this constant Islamophobic rubbish. The fact is, as perhaps the most reviled group currently, Muslims rarely ever get any sympathy. What they get is laws making it illegal to wear hijab/niqab, threats to nuke Mecca, threats to outlaw Sharia, invasion and deployment/military presence in their lands, undue suspicion and arrest as “terrorist” suspects which most of the time turn out to be false accusations, slanders and outlandish stereotypes against Islam/Muslims, genocidal rhetoric, religious restrictions on the practice of Islam, and many other things.

Next time, watch what you state, and make sure your statements aren’t so bigoted and stupid.

I can’t help but notice that you gave no evidence to back up your claims, and thus really brought nothing. Also, what you said is ridiculous – the Muslims get no sympathy, and are constantly being harassed. They wouldn’t be hurting themselves for five years if they didn’t get anything for it, but rather had to pay for the damages themselves. I mean, seriously, they vandalized their own mosques to get sympathy, and still the third biggest political party in the country is anti-Muslim? Lol!
And the rest of your comment is just the usual hate speech. But still, I wish you peace.

We don’t believe most of what muslims say as they have been caught vandalizing their own mosques to blame us for it. It makes good reading and muslims want sympathy to win hearts and minds. Forget it. Islam is violent, it is in the koran and the acts of violence by muslims are world wide. Stop killing non muslims for allah.
