Norwegian Black Metal Band Nominated for Music Prize Despite anti-Muslim Lyrics

Norwegian Black Metal Band Nominated for Music Prize Despite anti-Muslim Lyrics

A black metal band nominated for Norway’s top music prize has rejected claims that lyrics on its latest album go too far in their criticism of Islam.

Taake’s nomination for the Spellemann Prize in the Best Metal Album category has sparked a strong reaction from listeners who find some of the band’s lyrics objectionable, newspaperAftenposten reports. In the song Orkan (“Hurricane”) on its latest album, Noregs Vaapen, the band sings: “To hell with Muhammad and the Mohammedans” and their “unforgivable customs”. It ends with the line: “Norway will soon awaken”.

Marte Thorsby, chairman of the prize committee’s board, denied any assertion that the jury must not have listened to the album properly before announcing the nomination. “We enjoy full freedom of expression in Norway and a Spellemann jury is not going to censor content in any way,” she told Aftenposten.

Søderlind said the lyrics were presumably written prior to last summer’s terror attacks in Norway, “and in the aftermath of July 22nd they’re completely over the edge”. “I’d imagine Taake aren’t particularly proud of these lyrics after Utøya,” he said, referring to the massacre of 69 young people at a summer camp by anti-Islam extremist Anders Behring Breivik.

In a written response to the newspaper, Taake front-man Ørjan Stedjeberg said his sole intention with the contentious lyrics was to criticize religion. “Our view, in the name of freedom of expression, is that it is shameful to adhere to Christianity or Islam. Incidentally, Christianity is mentioned in the same lyrics, but that doesn’t seem to have been given any emphasis,” he wrote. “Taake has never been a political band, and we do not encourage either violence or racism.”

Stedjeberg previously landed himself in hot water in 2007 when he appeared onstage with a swastika painted on his chest in Essen, Germany, where any use of the former Nazi symbol is strictly prohibited. In a statement released after the incident, Stedjeberg said: “Taake is not a political Nazi band, etc. We certainly didn’t expect the current threat reactions, as everyone should know by now that our whole concept is built upon provocation and anything evil- and death-related.”

The Spellemann Prize winners will be announced at a ceremony on January 14th.

According to the Wikipedia entry on Taake, after subsequent concerts on the band’s German tour were cancelled due to the Essen incident Stedjeberg posted a statement on the Taake website in which he wrote: “we truly apologize to all of our collaborators who might get problems because of the Essen swastika scandal (except for the Untermensch owner of that club; you can go suck a Muslim).”

Aweaome, finally a big BM that dare to f**k with the “religion of peace”!
The christianity bashing is so boring and irrelevant, except for maybe being weak and hailing feeblemindedness. It is not controversial tho. So i’m glad Taake takes the stand against Islam, cant wait to see them this year!!

“Anyway the line of the song simply says “To hell with the Mohammedans”.
What’s the difference between that and the Koran saying, ad infinitum, “To hell with the non Mohammedans”. Sounds very similar to me.”

Geji – “Is this supposed to be funny intended? Can you explain what you mean by that?”

No. Not meant to be funny.

The black metal song says “To hell with the Mohammedans”. i.e. the Mohammedans can go to “hell”. Are you saying that the black metal band can not tell you that you will go to hell in the afterlife? Why not? They have a right to do so.

The Quran specifically says that non-believers, people who do not believe the words of Mohammed (i.e. non Mohammedans) will end up in a fiery hell and be burnt severely by Allah. i.e. in essence it says “to hell with non Mohammedans”.

Both hells are the same idea, one hell for Mohammedans given to us by non Mohammedans and the other hell for non Mohammedans given us by Mohammed. Sounds like a level playing field to me.

  • human

haha. Guys, this is nothing new. A bulk of black metal bands have an ideology that hates open society, Jewish-rooted monotheism and humanity in general. Of course Taake is bigoted, I sincerely doubt Geller will book them for a concert. As a black metal enthusiast, this is a non-issue; they hate everyone, Muslims included

  • HGG

“When 9/11 happened Hideo Kojima and Konami removed that scene to show respect to the American people”

I suppose the difference is that Kojima never intended to offend anyone, and this band is actively trying to.

I think I said before that this is a non-issue. It is black metal for crying out loud; angry youngsters just looking at stuff to shout at because they are full of angst. I don’t really care… in fact I am far more concerned that such crappy ‘music’ might win an award.

Are run-on sentences part of the Black Metal ethos, too?

  • Anti Muslim

For each devastated graveyard, one heathen grave is avenged, for each ten churches burnt to ashes, one heathen hof is avenged, for each ten priests or freemasons assassinated, one heathen is avenged

Vark Vikerness ex member of mayhem and probably the most famous person in history of black metal that is alive today sad that, stop bitching muslims this has been done to the christian´s for decade in the metal music scene dating to deicide with songs kill the christians

  • Anti Muslim

black metal has been making song´s about genocide of christians since the late 80´s when it started and “the circle” a knit black metalists started burning down ancient churches and mayhem used picturres of the churches being firebombed on there cd´s making singed about killing christians and mayhem are the founders of black metal.

And now in 2012 when some black metal make´s song about islam you get into a hissy fit muslim? You need a thicker skin guy´s like the christians

  • Dehnus

Meh it’s blackmetal, seriously let it be.

  • Sam Seed

    @Twiceasthick

“Muslims aren’t a race NOTHING wrong in hating, insulting, ridiculing, mocking religion. Its supernatural b/s and doesn’t deserve respect.”

Muslims are people, they aren’t supernatural. I don’t agree with your idea of mocking because they hold different views. You are not a nice guy but a hateful menace. It’s people like you that really are the real supremacists. Nothing good has ever come out of your mouth…because you have nothing good left in your soul.

  • Géji

“Anyway the line of the song simply says “To hell with the Mohammedans”.

    twiceasnice…

Correct, we aren’t a race but attacks against us are normally rooted in racism or have racist elements. You can perhaps tell me why I get no trouble about being a Muslim but my Sikh and Hindu friends have and do. Quite simply because they ‘look Muslim’ and I don’t. Racism pure and simple.

As for my beliefs not deserving respect, why is that? Because they don’t fit with whatever you believe? How nice… I hope you don’t see yourself as a defender of freedom or anything like that.

Yeah, if it was just the to hell with Muhammadans (Muhammadans, really?) I might not think much of it, but the whole “we must awake” non-sense reeks of xenophobic, Nazi-esque undercurrents.

I wouldn’t be remotely surprised if these were the people going around shooting up mosques and stuff like that. They have a history of it–just look up Norwegian church arson attacks. Norwegians have had such cushy lives that they easily fall into the mindless fantasy world that is black metal and this in turn leads them to act like retards. These people never grew out of their teen years, and there’s nothing more pathetic than grown adults behaving like teenagers.

  • twiceasnice

Muslims aren’t a race NOTHING wrong in hating, insulting, ridiculing, mocking religion. Its supernatural b/s and doesn’t deserve respect.

  • Solid Snake

Interesting that they didn’t self censor themselves after the Utoya incident. I remember when MGS2 was released in 2001 and it had a scene in which a giant ship/fortress called Metal Gear Arsenal was supposed to crash into Manhattan or somewhere near the same area into a bunch of buildings. When 9/11 happened Hideo Kojima and Konami removed that scene to show respect to the American people. Very interesting, but oh well it doesnt really matter anymore, a politician running for president of the US can say far worse things about Muslims. I dont care if they criticise Islam but the use of orientalist and Islamophobic buzzwords like ‘mohammedan’ makes me doubt that they criticise all religion equally.

  • JT

Isa, that they use the expression “you can go suck a Muslim” indicates they are Islamophobic. They may hate others as well, but that doesn’t mean they are no longer Islamophobic — they’re just very hateful people.

  • Isa

“When they say things like. “to hell with Muhammad/”Muhammadans” etc. and also say “Norway will soon awaken” sounds a lot like the racism/supremacism that was displayed by Anders Behring Behrik. Their hateful speech should not be ignored or underestimated.”

Right, but they also bashed Christianity in the same song. Maybe they are Islamophobes, but they are not exclusive in their bigotry, is what I mean to say. They seem to hate all monotheistic religions, which includes Islam, Christianity, Judaism, etc. Some people are “equal opportunist” haters. Some of the more famous Nordic Black Metal bands are known for their hatred of Christianity, coupled with their desires to “return” to their ancestors pagan roots, which they blame Christianity for suppressing when it arrived in their land thousands of years ago. Since Islam is related to Christianity and Judaism, it becomes part of the targeted enemy of some of these groups.

  • Persian

They are also criticizing Christianity, with seems to go along with their anti-religion/pro-heathen theme that is prevalent in black metal. As long as they hate equally….

  • Ahmed

Black metal bands in Norway have a problem of being quite hate-filled. Varg Varkeness vocalist of Burzum once killed someone and those black metal fans relating to Burzum had a hate-filled, criminal lust for ruining churches.

Such a shame metal has gone from skill and technicality ie. Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Metallica to screaming and violence eg Norweigan Black metal

I agree with people that lines like ‘to hell with…’ is quite severe including the word Mohammadenans since it attacks a particular group of people

  • Farlowe

Anyway the line of the song simply says “To hell with the Mohammedans”.
What’s the difference between that and the Koran saying, ad infinitum, “To hell with the non Mohammedans”. Sounds very similar to me.

  • Farlowe

Don’t take them too seriously. By the look of the photo they use transistor Marshall amps. :-)

  • Garth Eisenstein

This is Islamophobic without a doubt. Just because they don’t single out Muslims/Islam does not mean they are not Islamophobic.

When they say things like. “to hell with Muhammad/”Muhammadans” etc. and also say “Norway will soon awaken” sounds a lot like the racism/supremacism that was displayed by Anders Behring Behrik. Their hateful speech should not be ignored or underestimated.

  • Isa

Yeah, I wouldn’t call this “specifically” Islamophobic since they also bash Christianity and Christians in their lyrics, and seem to detest monotheistic religions in general.

  • mindy1

Eh, they just seem to be going for shock value-they are trying to be outrageous, and get attention.
