Hollywood Hates on a Muslim Sean Stone

Twitter and the general looniverse was abuzz with the angry reactions of Islamophobes to  Sean Stone’s conversion to Islam, we covered the episode in our post, Oliver Stone’s Son Converts to Islam: The “Islamization” of Hollywood Continues?

In the most recent update to the story Stone discusses the reaction he has received both in the film industry and at large:

“I’ve already experienced the reverse of anti-Semitism, having people within the film industry express a reluctance to work with me now that I have said a simple prayer, ‘There is no God but God, and Mohammed is his messenger.’ I am sure I have [bleeped] off some powerful people.”

…..

“I didn’t realize I would be so vilified. It is almost like I am a criminal for having accepted Islam. I didn’t realize Islamophobia was that deep. People have speculated that I have done this because I am from a spoiled family or that I am lost and trying to find myself. That is ridiculous.

“I don’t care if I get criticized. If I can open up a debate about religion and create some understanding, then it is worth it.”

The below report is from the NY Post, not our favorite news source, but if you get a chance you will see that the majority of the comments are exceptionally Islamophobic and anti-Muslim in tone.

Sean Stone, son of controversial director Oliver Stone, converted to Islam in Iran last week and says he’s already experiencing a Hollywood backlash.

The ceremony was held in Isfahan, where he is researching a documentary. He now goes by the name of Sean Christopher Ali Stone.

He told Page Six: “I’ve already experienced the reverse of anti-Semitism, having people within the film industry express a reluctance to work with me now that I have said a simple prayer, ‘There is no God but God, and Mohammed is his messenger.’ I am sure I have [bleeped] off some powerful people.” Speaking over dinner at Barrio 47, Sean told us, “Having read the Koran and having been around the Islamic culture, especially in Iran, I do believe that Mohammed is a prophet of the same god worshipped by other religions.

“I am of a Jewish bloodline, a baptized Christian who accepts Christ’s teachings, the Jewish Old Testament and the Holy Koran. I believe there is one God, whether called Allah or Jehovah or whatever you wish to name him. He creates all peoples and religions. I consider myself a Jewish Christian Muslim.

“What I am trying to do is open up a dialogue about religion. There is such Islamophobia in the West. Islam is not a religion of violence any more than Judaism or Christianity is.”

He said his dad welcomed the move.

“My dad said, ‘Allah be with you.’ My father understands that I am trying to bridge certain gaps and bring about peace.”

But he has been shocked by the reaction from others. Sean, about to release his horror movie “Graystone,” said, “I didn’t realize I would be so vilified.

@Hard Core Atheist A little explanation for you, and of course any of my fellow muslims are free to disagree with me.
i was raised with the understanding that as a Muslim i am a follower of Jesus, with the exception being that he is a human not a deity. I was raised to believe that Islam is merely a sort of extension to what we refer to as judaism.although i am not a huge fan, Thomas Friedman said it best when he said in the muslim view judaism is GOD 1.0, Christianity is GOD 2.0 , and Islam is GOD 3.0 .Therefore in my opinion Its not too much of a stretch for a believer to refer to himself as a Christian-jewish -Muslim. I know people like to create exact categories but I personally feel no offense nor see any problem with that.

  • khushboo

no, but Sean will definitely be discriminated against.

I could care less about who anyone worships but I do care when I hear another umpteenth story of a priest molesting a child here in the good ole U.S. of A. Is that a Christian thing to do Andrew?

  • Andrew

“Tell me, followers of Spencer and Geller, how in God’s name following a different religion that still worships the Almighty is that wrong and insane?”

Worship whatever deity you want. Zues, Odin, Baal, Molech, Krishna. I couldn’t care less. I do care when I read an Iranian pastor is about to be put to death in Iran for apostasy. Oliver Stone’s son will never have to worry about that in the States though, will he.

  • Hard Core Atheist

So, he’s not a christian or a jew, he just has respect and a connection to those religions. He is muslim (I think).

  • Farlowe

“My father understands that I am trying to bridge certain gaps and bring about peace.”

Good luck with that. I might adopt all religions (and even Scientology) simultaneously and see if that brings about peace. It is an interesting exercise in mathematical set theory.

  • khushboo

It’s going to be a tough ride for Sean. I wish him alot of luck!

  • HGG

Oh, boo-hoo. A week ago no one even knew who Sean Stone was.

  • Michael Elwood

Oops! I meant to say Lewis Arquette, not William.

  • Ali G

May he find Allah’s true blessing. If he comes out of the closet though, he may want to exit Iran first.

  • Christian-friend

    His ancestor where peaceful Jews
    his parents are peaceful Christians
    he is a peaceful Muslim
They all believe in One God and follow holy books

Tell me, followers of Spencer and Geller, how in God’s name following a different religion that still worships the Almighty is that wrong and insane?

  • Michael Elwood

    @Hard Core Atheist

    “Is he really a muslim?”

Who knows. Hollywood types like to follow religious trends (like Scientology, Kabbala etc.). There’s nothing trendy about Islam, however. There have always been low profile Muslims in Hollywood like the producer Mara Brock Akil, and the filmaker Qasim Basir, and his sister Maryam Basir. After 9/11, David Arquette’s sister, Patricia, spoke out against Islamophobia. She pointed out that her father, William, was a Muslim and that she grew up in a home where Ramadan was celebrated.

“How is someone a musim, jewish and a Christian all at the same time?”

Because Islam teaches that all the prophets brought the same message. For example, centuries ago, the British philosophers Henry Stubbe and John Toland called themselves as Christian Muslims.

  • mjasghar

He seems to be saying he was a Christian, but with strong Jewish family heritage. That’s not uncommon, esp in the US where many Jews do marry out of the faith. He’s become a Muslim, with soft spot for his old Chrisitian faith – again, common amongst Chrisitan converts to Islam. BUt it would wrong for him to disown his Jewish heritage as that’s his family.
    See, it’s easy.
Geji, don’t be too optimistic. News Int i.e. Fox will do their best to freeze him out, and sadly many Jewish people *and there’s a few in the film industry, which is why Holocaust films always tend to come out in time to get on the Oscar list) nowadays buy into the jew=anti-muslim, as do too many of our bros and sis.

  • JT

    Hard Core Atheist,

He is a Muslim because he has accepted that there is one God and that Muhammad is His Prophet. Muslims still believe in the Jewish prophets and in Jesus, so there is no contradiction if he believes himself to be a member of all three Abrahamic religions.

  • Al

I hate on Hollywood types BECAUSE they are Hollywood types. Stone’s faith has nothing to do with this- Amurica doesn’t need royalty

  • Hard Core Atheist

Is he really a muslim? How is someone a musim, jewish and a Christian all at the same time? Free for him to do what he wants, but is it honest to be calling him a muslim? I’m so confused by religion!!!!

  • juju

New York Post creates stories out of nothing. But if this is true, may Hollywood change their tune. (It’s not like they make good movies anymore)

  • Saladin

I wonder what Spencer-Man , the masters of the “looniverse” have to say about this

  • Géji

He’s young, handsome, full of energy, and has power. I think he’ll have a great impact on the Muslim Americans, and has already shattered in so many way by converting to Muhammad’s message, the many ignorant preconceived notion about Muslims in general. I think ladies and gentlemen, we’re just witnessing Islam’s true debut in Hollywood, washing away the unbalanced, stereotyped clichés for past decades of Muslims, and particularly that of Arabs in H’wood. Down the line I think he’ll be a great force to be reckoned with, smashing Islamophobia universe with force, I wonder with the bad-news at-hand, how the king and queen of that universe(Spency/Geller) are doing.

  • Snoman

“As long as he doesn’t don the beannie cap and silly beard, I have no problem with it!”

Why would you have a problem with it if he did?

  • TheBig-T

This is addressed to the morons who attack Sean:
Since when do people get to dictate what religion you have to be in order to have a happy life, Sean’s choice was be his own free will and not some rabid “STEALTH HALAL TURKEY FORCED JEIHAD”, I thought people had freedom of choice and freedom of religion
people are free to choose what they believe in be it God/Allah, Jesus, The Force, Buddah, ect, its one of the Fundamental Human Rights.

and to brother Sean, Stay strong and don’t let these fascists get to you

  • Amy

As long as he doesn’t don the beannie cap and silly beard, I have no problem with it!

  • JT

It’s clear that Islamophobes hate Islam itself and not just extremist Muslims.

  • marc,,scotland

a jewish christian muslim? Another idiotic celebrity..if hes still practisin religion in 5 years good luck to him

  • mindy1

Looniverse-what a perfect term. He should follow whatever faith he feels comfortable with.

  • Sam Seed

    May Allah be with you.
