299 women fined under veil ban law says French interior ministry

One year after France introduced a law banning women from wearing full-face veils in public, officials report that around 300 have been fined.

The ban on wearing the niqab in any public place was introduced on April 11th 2011. It is illegal for any woman to wear the veil except when they are at home, worshipping in a religious place or travelling as a passenger in a private car. Wearing the veil can lead to a fine of €150 ($200) and forced attendance at a citizenship class.

Interior ministry officials reported that “in one year there have been 354 police checks and 299 fines issued,” reported Le Parisien newspaper.

At the time of the law being passed, officials estimated that around 2,000 women were wearing the full-face veil. In January, interior minister Claude Guéant told parliament that “the number of women wearing the veil has fallen by half” since the law was introduced.

Rachid Nekkaz of the group “Touche pas à ma Constitution” (Don’t Touch My Constitution) claims that 367 women have been fined and questioned in police stations for “between one and a half and three hours.” Two-thirds of the women questioned are divorced or single, according to Nekkaz. He believes this proves the women are not wearing the veil “by force of a husband.”

I did wonder if the same woman was fined 20 times. Its amazing what you can do with statistics :-)

NurAlla, you can soon add Indonesia to the list: http://www.smh.com.au/world/you-know-what-men-are-like-indonesia-to-ban-miniskirts-over-links-to-rape-20120329-1vz7q.html#ixzz1qSErsqs7

Irony of it all is, while these same Muslims would cry foul over this law, they would have no problem with the laws that Indonesian clerics are proposing. Talk about hypocrisy.

    Tell us…

How is it less oppressive to deny or restrict what a woman might chose to wear, than it is to force her to wear something she doenst choose?

I really dont understand the logic of banning clothes to avoid becoming like the oppressive you claim to be protecting yourselves from.

The only nations in the world to ban…by statue a woman’s right to wear soemthing is…Saudi Arabia, Iran, Belgium, and France.

Sarkozy is a Zionist punk, oh yeah and his last campaign was funded by the Gaddafi family lol. http://rt.com/news/sarkozy-gaddafi-finance-campaign-443/

It’s an evil injustice even if it were one woman. How about we fine the bankers for hiding behind the veil of a suit and government protection as well as Sarkozy.

The report in The Local is in fact inaccurate. The Le Parisien report on which it is based says that 299 women were reported, not fined. Another article by RFI states that around 20 women have been fined.

When you want to galvanize the public as a politician race based politics is a great tool. What does Sarkozy and those French politicians care about wasting police resources when you claim those “horrible veils” are a threat to French culture.

Truth be told you can tell how insignificant the Muslim population is in France due to the willingness to make laws specifically to affect just a small minority of them. Politically weak ethnic groups are always easy targets as no one makes laws to effect politically strong groups of people.

That was supposed to be

I cannot believe that they are waisting precious police resouces on this, when they have REAL problems to deal with. *roll*
