‘Instead of dividing France, you should unite it’, Tariq Ramadan tells Sarkozy

Posted on 08 April 2012 by Emperor

Sarkozy is more interested in dividing France especially if that will win him votes:

‘Instead of dividing France, you should unite it’, Tariq Ramadan tells Sarkozy

Swiss Islamic intellectual Tariq Ramadan laid into French President Nicolas Sarkozy in a speech to the annual meeting of a major Muslim organisation Saturday. His call to “unite France” and not “divide it” came after government ministers criticised the Union of Islamic Organisations of France’s (UOIF) invitation to him to speak.

Before the UOIF meeting at Le Bourget near Paris this weekend Interior Minister Claude Guéant said he regretted the fact that Ramadan was on the speakers’ list.

He may regret it even more after Ramadan’s speech, which did not name him or the president but clearly targeted their rhetoric during the presidential election campaign and their reaction to the killing spree of “lone-wolf” Islamist Mohamed Merah.

“Instead of talking about halal meat, the burka, national identity and dividing France, you should unite it,” Ramadan told a packed hall at the conference, which was attended by 41,000 people on Saturday alone.

“Of course [Merah's] murders in Montauban and Toulouse should be condemned without hesitation,” he said. “But … we don’t expect a government to fan the flames.”

Ramadan, who is the grandson of the founder of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, Hassan al Banna, thanked the event’s organisers for inviting him “despite the difficulties, the pressure, the accusations” and facetiously told France’s intelligence services “if you could remind the government what we really stand for, you would be performing a useful service”.

John Says: “Again where is the evidence?

Oh boy! John, there’s a simple way of doing this since you seem having access to internet, DO a bit research on the guy, he is not that hard to find cause he’s quite famous and his biography is out-there. But I’ll give you three of the Muslim-majority countries where he’s been banned, 1)- Egypt(his ancestral home under Mubarak dictatorship) Saudi-Arabia and Sudan. Now, be a big boy and do your own research, I won’t do it for you.

  • NurAlia

    @john.

If a person defines freedom by what someone else does, he becomes the slave of those whom defines his freedom.

  • John

    > “Name them with evidence.”

“This remark of your most definitely shows how you haven’t done any research on Ramadan at all. You want to know the list of Muslim majority countries that banned him?? Well again, try almost all Muslim majority countries were there are dictators single-handedly running the show , most of them whom are secular, including his ancestral home Egypt. Banned solely for criticizing their dictatorship.”

Again where is the evidence? Any official statement banning him from “half of the ‘muslim countries’” as you claimed? There are 57 Muslim countries FYI.

  • Slevdi

In response to the suggestion that only Muslims are terrorists, my feeling is that a horrible crime motivated by a personal issue is a horrible crime.

When it is motivated by a political or religious objective – e.g. Revenge for the murdered children in Gaza or the murder of Norwegian youths at a conference – it deserves to be called terrorism as it has a public agenda.

So a Muslim who kills without stating a political or religious objective or justification, is committing a horrible crime but isn’t a terrorist. If the press associate such a killer with terrorism then they are terribly wrong and deserve to be called on it.

  • Slevdi

I thought all the people deported weren’t French citizens as well as being proven bad guys?

The French citizens arrested were under surveillance for planning a politically motivated kidnapping. Sounds like they were stopped in time to me.

Who would want bad guys like this operating freely in their society? Not me. But apparently TR does along with many French citizens. Beats me.

mmm and Where do you live John?
    I live in Angers 49000.
I think Tariq hit the nail on the head . But Sarko just wants to steal voters from Front National

John Says: “..and He is in a position to lecture France, how?”

Boy! John, you haven’t done any research whatsoever on Tariq Ramadan before spewing nonsense towards him have you? Most definitely he IS in a position to condemn the hypocrisy of France’s politicians that exploit the Merah tragedy to further their policies of bigotry and racism towards Arab/Muslim community, in order to get more votes exploiting the ignorance of French citizens that may succumbed to their deceitful tactics at spreading fear. How you asked? well, because 1)- He is a European Swiss born citizen. 2)- those targeted with bigotry and racism are European Arab Muslims, the same community he’s from.

    > “Name them with evidence.”

This remark of your most definitely shows how you haven’t done any research on Ramadan at all. You want to know the list of Muslim majority countries that banned him?? Well again, try almost all Muslim majority countries were there are dictators single-handedly running the show , most of them whom are secular, including his ancestral home Egypt. Banned solely for criticizing their dictatorship. He was also banned from the “free-speech/freedom loving” country, which is the US of A, solely because of his strong condemnation of the Bush regime at carpet bombing/slaughtering Muslims abroad without reason.

  • John

    “the topic is about France.”

..and He is in a position to lecture France, how?

“ps. he is banned from half of the ‘muslim countries’ for his opinions – do some research before you speak.”

    Name them with evidence.

Europe is a cesspool of Islamophobia at this time. I personally feel that all Muslims in Europe should leave and return to their homeland to strengthen the Muslim world. Stay only if you feel that you can contribute to da’wah.

  • Jinn

@ John, the topic is about France. Why does everything come back to “Islamic” countries or x y z individual. I guess a Muslim shouldn’t open his mouth till everything is fixed in their ancestors country and only then they should get equal rights to speak and voice their opinions.

ps. he is banned from half of the ‘muslim countries’ for his opinions – do some research before you speak.

Check out what Nicolas Sarkozy said in 2003 as Minister of the Interior about the the French Muslim community:

QUOTE: “The Muslims in France have made clear their determination to be French people like the others, to be French Muslims practising a French form of Islam. My thoughts are first and foremost with your faithful and their families. It is unacceptable in France for a Muslim to be regarded as a different sort of citizen, as one with no right to live his religion and pass it on to his children in an atmosphere of respect and dignity.

In France, the Muslim faith must not be a religion apart. It must find its rightful place like the other faiths that were given recognition a long time ago. No more, but no less than that.

Today, more than ever, we must deliver a strong message together. At a time when the war in Iraq casts a long shadow – when some are prone to find pretexts for creating suspicion and confrontation in our country – your gathering is duty-bound to present an image of integration, peace, serenity and citizenship. In this respect, I want to pay tribute to the leaders of the Muslim community. Like your counterparts in the other religions, you have spoken out in a way that is commensurate with the responsibilities you bear.” http://www.ambafrance-uk.org/Twentieth-annual-meeting-of-the.html

So – what has changed in France? The upcoming election? This attack on the French Muslims – including “arrests” – is nothing but a show. It also shows that the European right is not viewed as dangerous and violent, as it should be, but in need of appeasement by European leaders. Rather than appeasement – the National Front should have been banned!

    @ John

What is hypocritical, John, is what I’ve said above: Horrible crimes by suspects of a Muslim background are “terrorism” and the suspect is a “jihadist,” while horrible crimes by non-Muslims are just horrible crimes.

Only Mohamed Merah is responsible for his own crimes, not the entire French Muslim community. We will never know if Mohamed Merah – who alone is responsible for his own actions – was insane or suffering from mental illness. He could have been mentally ill just as other similar mass shooters have mental illness, as his actions were quite disorganizated.

This reminds me of how the aftermath murder of Theo van Gogh went in the Netherlands. Community blame followed, which included violence against Dutch Moroccans. Innocent people were blamed and attacked just because of their ethnicity and religious faith. If horrible mass shootings were treated as acts by single suspects – not as statements of a religious-ethnic community – the murder of Theo van Gogh would not be labeled “an act of terrorism.” The worst act of political violence against the Dutch people occurred on April 30, 2009 in Apeldoorn.

This is not “terrorism” no more than Karst Tates running parade watchers over in his little black Honda…

  • http://www.yellow-stars.com eslaporte

The problem in Europe is that crimes by Muslims are “terrorism” – while crimes by non-Muslims are just crimes. When mass shootings occurred in Italy last December against immigrant vendors by a right wing extremist – where was this called “terrorism?” When a there a shooting spree a year a ago (today is the one-year date) Alphen aan den Rijn, we did not see accusations that the shooter was a “lone wolf terrorist.” These killers are either just bad people or crazy – but when it’s discovered they have some Muslim background its “terrorism!”

We also had a Korean American go on a killing spree at college in Oakland, CA – killing seven nursing students. Nowhere in the media do we see government terrorism “experts” accusing the Korean American community of “harboring more terrorists.” We see NO talk about One Goh’s religious and political “radicalization.”

Now – imagine if we found out that One Goh was converting to Islam?!

Note that when one of these mass killings occurs – how it is labeled by the media and the government officials. If the person has a Muslim background, the discourse is quite different. It then goes into “how the person was ‘radicalized’” and how many more “radicalized” people are there in the Muslim community.

This discourse includes group blame against the entire Muslim community that we simply do not see against even the radicalized and dangerous right wing!

We also need to know what these “arrests” are for! Are people being “arrests” by the French State for their religious faith and/or their political beliefs? Are these “violent Islamists” being “arrested” for things that non-Muslims would NOT be arrested for?

How many EDL members have been arrested for the same type of activities?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

If the French “Islamists” are being “arrested” for activities and speech non-Muslims engage in — this violates their basic human rights and is discrimination!

  • John

“‘Instead of dividing France, you should unite it’, Tariq Ramadan tells Sarkozy”

Why doesn’t he say that to Muslims countries, most of whom persecute their own citizen’s of varying faiths? Pot calling back and all that…

However you are not an Islamists if not a big time hypocrite.

    @Emperor,

Ramadan is a good man. I hope Sarkozy listens to him.
