Senator Russ Feingold Takes on Islamophobia

by Nayantara MukherjiThe University of Wisconsin, Inside Islam: Dialogues and Debates

Former Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold is known for taking on monumental challenges. In 2001 he was the only senator to vote against the Patriot Act. These days, Feingold has turned his attention to another cause—US foreign policy. At a talk in Madison, Wisconsin, about his new book, While America SleepsFeingold argued for increased American engagement with the rest of the world. He said 9/11 highlighted the importance of engaging and understanding the rest of the world, and criticized Democrats and Republicans alike for failing to heed the message.

In making his case, Feingold, a Jewish-American, did not lose sight of domestic issues, pointing out the impact 9/11 had on the lives of Muslim Americans. He likened the situation to Japanese internment during World War II.

In the last couple of years, there have been a number of incidents where people have used the issue of alleged Muslim extremism in this country to justify things like outlawing a mosque in Southern Manhattan, the burning of Qur’ans and most despicably, hearings held by Peter King in Washington specifically focusing on so-called Muslim terrorism, as opposed to the terrorism phenomenon in general.

Feingold bemoaned the fact that the post-9/11 era has made Muslims feel like second-class citizens in their own country.

Their hope is that they can once again someday feel like they’re not strangers in their own country. … Naturally, it must be very frustrating for Muslims to have their religion characterized in a way that is essentially wrong. Islam is not a religion of the kind that’s described by the political opportunists in this country.

Feingold also argued against the characterization of Islamic values as contrary to democratic values. He recounted his experience meeting with the Madison-area Muslim community after 9/11, but long before the Arab Spring.

The thing that really angered them was that we spoke of the virtues of democracy and human rights and women’s rights, and yet we supported despots throughout the Islamic world who did just the opposite. … Even though it’s not specifically about the religious element, it’s a very significant thing in terms of the way American Muslims and Arabs think about our international policy.

    The biggest threat comes from the Christian Right. They include rabid Zionists who want an Armeggedon, and they hate all religons even other Christianity (Catholics and Protestants who are not Evangelical) but speficically Islam. Did you read Fear Inc? Their commonality is rabid Zionism not atheism.

    To this, if you bash athesists as a group, you are alientating potential allies, please call them, ‘atheist extremists’.

    Our allies include all who oppose the Christian Right, most notably, liberals, left wing Christians (most Protestant churches), and atheists.

    Meant to say, atheists are a lesser threat, and nazis are despised and marginalised.

    let’s focus our energies on the chief culprits

    All those examples you gave were in the last century. Whilst I agree that militiant atheists are just as bad as Islamophobes, there is no concerted effort specifically against Islam from anyone except ‘counter jihad’ people.

    Are there any atheist groups who are spending millions opposing Islam as opposed to religion? If the latter and as long as no genocide or stripping of rights is involved, i do not see it as a threat.

    The prime threat to Muslims, is from the counterjihad group, hailing from the USA. Neocons, zion extremists, Christian Zionists,

    By comparison, atheists and neo nazi’s are a lesser threat as they are despised and marginalised.

    the whole 2 year cycle in US politics means it tends to stick to a right wing agenda.
    also US and British leaders seem to have some mind-control device put on them when theyget into power: they obey the military heads of staff in their policies. Look at the tories implementing security policies they specifically opposed whilst they were in opposition.

    @ramio1983

    I agree.

    Great on him, i appreciate all logical defenders of Islam- regardless of their creed. Also i am sick of the Atheist bandwagon that states religion is the “root of all evil”- that is refuted with a few examples of how Anti-Theism is just as dangerous as any religion.

    Peace.

    As much as I would like what you’re saying to be true, you may not be giving Senator Feingold enough credit. Too few people, even in the democratic party are willing to do what he did.

    We’ll wait and see, but I wish him luck

    If Senator Feingold is affiliated with the Obama campaign, then it means that Obama was serious when he said he wanted rapprochement with the Muslim world.

    For a while there, it seemed like he was only making empty promises, especially with his continued war assaults.

    It also means that Think Progress, the CAP linked think tank that has an Islamophobia division which researched and published Fear Inc. and which also advises President Obama is most probably involved too.

    This is good news.

    I also have another snippet of good news. The OIC is finally taking Islamophobia seriously. It’s planning a newpaper specifically for Islamophobia, and a global channel, like Al Jazeera but specifically for Islamophobia.

    Does anyone see a link here? The OIC and Hilary Clinton have been having meetings. I’m glad that instead of censoring Islamophobia, they have found a better way to counter it.

    Great news! On all counts. Islamophobes, count your days. Finally this disease is being given the remedial action it needs.

    @Ilisha

    Good for him. Other politicians need to do the same thing.

    Thanks for posting this article about Russ Feingold. He is an ally and he is correct to argue the characterization of Islam as contrary to democracy. Some people need to be reminded that Iran had a democractically elected leader until he was assassinated by the CIA.

    Whenever another accuses others of being contrary to democracy, I see a projection. It is the accuser who has the problem with democracy. Projections are the worst: they mess you up and make you blind, you see yourself and think it’s someone else.

    Also of interest about Russ Feingold is that he is helping to run the Obama reelection campaign. He regrets Obama’s decision to allow Super PACs. When it comes to justice and fairness, Feingold rocks!
