Pat Robertson Says the Christian Thing to do is, “Destroy Your Friend’s Buddha Statue”

Posted on 17 May 2012 by Emperor

Everyone knows the Taliban are just the Afghan version of the Pat Robertson’s of the world, right? Pat Robertson was asked on air by a concerned Christian named “Jenny” about a moral quandary she had relating to her roommate’s “Buddha statue.”

Jenny: My friend who is a Christian has a Buddha statue next to her Christian ones. Is this ok?

Pat Robertson, who always speaks Biblically gave a pretty unequivocal answer, “Destroy it.”

Pat Robertson: No its not. Take it away and break it. Break it! Destroy it.

So the message is Christian statues are OK but not Buddhist ones, oh and don’t respect the property of other peoples!

Pat Robertson: Destroy Your Friends Buddha Statue

(WhatIfTheyWereMuslim.com)

Here at WITWM, we frown upon all acts of religious desecration. When the Taliban destroyed the Buddhas of Bamiyan in March of 2001 it was not only unIslamic but immoral on many levels. Now Pat Robertson is calling for similar measures, can one imagine if a Muslim Imam had said something similar? As of now there is barely a peep about this. (h/t Critical Dragon)

    @Nilufer R Sage; ONLY ,If you had read my comments carefully,I used the word ‘MIGHT have a few qualities’ which I am still striving to find.Insha Allah.Quran equates Mohammad with Allah when it asks Muslims to ‘OBEY ALLAH and MOHAMMAD’.Do you consider Mohammad as GOD too. Hence Quran should be thrown away as well.It is BLASPHEMY.

    @Halal Pork

    If Pat Robertson was joking he sure fooled everyone else here, without intending to, not to mention the people of Right Wing Watch, and Little Green Footballs, where I originally found the video. Also this makes sense if you understand how people like Pat Robertson think. Tell, do you really believe that there are only Muslim extremist out there? You don’t believe that there are no extremists of other faiths? By the way, extremist does not necessarily equal violent. It could be a person who just has extremist beliefs, although there are people of all faiths and no faith at all who are violent extremists as well.

    Also you continue without evidence to suggest that Muslims are more likely to lie than non Muslims.

  • Nilufer R. Sage

    @Halal Pork – What are Muslims “few” qualities?

  • Nilufer R. Sage

    And here, no one even remembers the incident involving that “buddhist” group setting off a toxic gas bomb in the subway station…

  • Halal Pork

    @VRM:The Muslims might have a few qualities but HONESTY is certainly not one of them.Loon watch did not understand the sense of humour of Pat.Robertson.Mohammad used to get people killed if he thought that they ridiculed him.He had paranoid personality like most Muslims who are mentally SICK.

  • Truth Hurts

    Do people of Abrahamic faiths condemn the actions of their numerous prophets e.g. Abraham “the idol-breaker” etc?

    Let us be honest & stand for the truth.

    Two years ago I volunteered in a thrift shop, I saw a hanging framed Buddha statue…I really regret not buying that.

    Am I Buddhist? No, I’m an atheist with a really good appreciation of art.

    Pat Robertson should be slapped upside the head for suggesting it’s cool to destroy other people’s property. It doesn’t matter if it cost ten dollars or ten thousand, he owes that roommate if it does get broken.

  • Christian-friend

    Ah well, thanks to dan20, it seems to been VRM is deadly wrong

    btw, all religions are peaceful, but the followers not so much

    Pat Robinson may also be responsible for starting the Civil War in Liberia in 1990. Charles Taylor had extensive business dealings Pat Robinson.

    From a Wikipedia article:

    Taylor had extensive business dealings with American televangelist Pat Robertson during the civil war. According to the article, Taylor gave Robertson the rights to mine for diamonds in Liberia’s mineral-rich countryside. According to two Operation Blessing pilots who reported this incident to the Commonwealth of Virginia for investigation in 1994, Robertson used his Operation Blessing planes to haul diamond-mining equipment to his new mines in Liberia, despite the fact that Robertson was telling his 700 Club viewers that the planes were sending relief supplies to the victims of the genocide in Rwanda. The subsequent investigation by the Commonwealth of Virginia concluded that Robertson diverted his ministry’s donations to the Liberian diamond-mining operation, but Attorney General of Virginia Mark Earley blocked any potential prosecution against Robertson, as the relief supplies were also sent.

    @VRM:

    Don’t be so sure you idiot. I can bring up a report by Human Rights Watch which shows Buddhists did the same EXACT thing you are claiming they won’t do. They tore down an 18th century mosque in Burma in retaliation for the Taliban’s destruction of the Buddha statues.

    http://www.hrw.org/legacy/backgrounder/asia/burma-bck4.htm#P103_22688

    “There was mounting tension between the Buddhist and Muslim communities in Taungoo for weeks before it erupted into violence in the middle of May 2001. The destruction of the Buddhist images in Bamiyan seem to have been one of the main triggers. Buddhist monks demanded that the ancient Hantha Mosque in Taungoo be destroyed in retaliation for the destruction in Bamiyan, according to Muslim leaders.”

    I may be critical of Muslims but for a Buddhist to chime in and give off the peaceful jive talk, I ain’t gonna stand for it. Stop oppressing Tamil Hindus and then you can preach about being peaceful.

    No one deleted “half your post.” I removed the link to a hate site featuring anti-Muslim loon Wafa Sultan. Please stay on topic.

    @ geji
    Did I mention a muslim?
    And half of my post is eaten by the moderator.
    Loonwatch sure is scared of truth.
    LOL.

  • Géji

    @john spielman, you want a chance to compete? get rid of the inner idol. Oncle Pat Robertson fail.

  • Géji

    @Christian-friend, for God sake, this guy its advocating a statue to destroy a statue!

  • Géji

    @VRM, I’ll admit Muslims “fiery”, but statues firing statues?

  • http://shaw john spielman

    As a follower of Christ, I must apologise for the statements from Pat Robertson. Jesus does not allow us to act violently against any one( Luke 19 et al is a parable of the end of this age and the judgemnt of God against all who HIS direct rule of earth). We are to love our neighbors and even our enemies and do good to those who persecute us.
    No one can come to Jesus unless the HOLY SPIRIT calls him/her.

  • Christian-friend

    @VRM, I somehow can’t disagree with you

  • Sir David : Man on a phone with a french spell check

    IbnAbuTalib
    I disagree with banning people we should let the world know the full extent of their knowledge And views. ……….then have a good laugh. :-)
    Banning people just makes people paranoid And confirms their paranoia .
    Laughter works much better , pointing out logical inconsistancy influences the other readers views And that is what is important :-)

  • VRM

    Destroy not one but a thousand, publicly, and I bet not a single Buddhist will declare a bounty on his head or start rioting or blow himself up.
    At most they will lodge mild verbal protest and wave it off saying Buddha is not confined to a few statues.

  • Géji

    Summer Seale Says.. ‘As an atheist, I think that Christianity is full of stupid, brutal, and violent rhetoric’ — Black Infidel relies.. Quote – ‘I’m also an atheist and I agree with that as well of course’.

    @Black Infidel, Koodos for making show of Atheism look like cuckoo-tarte of intolerance (perhaps more digestible than religious?). I was amazed at “Summer Seale” Christianophobic idiot statement, but you approving of such speak for itself. Is a cuckoo-tarte cooked by ‘Atheism’ more digestible?

  • Franczeska

    I was told by a number of different Muslims that owning statues is fine, so long as one does not make idols of them and worship them.

  • Black Infidel

    Summer Seale Says:

  • Averroe’s Ghost

    Umer go away, play in yur Salafist sandbox.

    There is a difference btweens Idol and Statue. One is for worship, the other isnt. The statues of Bamiyan were “tamathil.” Many scholar condemned the irresponsible action of the Talban.

    Holy Quran recognizes tamathil, and even Prophet Sulayman had the jinnan construct them,
    13. And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind – its morning [journey was that of] a month – and its afternoon [journey was that of] a month, and We made flow for him a spring of [liquid] copper. And among the jinn were those who worked for him by the permission of his Lord. And whoever deviated among them from Our command – We will make him taste of the punishment of the Blaze.
    14. They made for him what he willed of elevated chambers, statues, bowls like reservoirs, and stationary kettles. [We said], “Work, O family of David, in gratitude.” And few of My servants are grateful. (surat 34: Saba)

    IF statues were forbidden on basis of they all can lead to idolatry, then Prophet Sulayman would be consider Mushrik. Usual answer is “oh, that’s old shariah.” But no prophet would follow or have something in shariah that is ANTI-TAWHID!

  • Garibaldi

    @Critical, you wrote,

    Couldn’t agree more. We should also stress that he’s calling for someone to destroy another person’s private property, for their “own good” so to speak.

    That should be stressed and I’m glad Emperor mentioned it.

    @IbnAbuTalib,

    If we delete every comment we don’t like or agree with there wouldn’t be much of a comment thread left. If anyone says anything racist or prejudiced we will ban them. We try to maintain a balance here and provide a forum for discussion, to include even those hateful voices, but those who advocate destruction agains’t others’s religious artifacts are on thin ice with us for sure.

  • InPeace

    I would be curious to know the Muslim view of a Muslim personally owning a Buddhist statue.

    I’m sure many Muslim thinkers have come to the same conclusion as Pat Robertson.
