RIP MCA of the Beastie Boys: Great Musician, Fighter Against Injustice, Stood Up Against Islamophobia in 1998!

Posted on 04 May 2012 by Garibaldi

Adam Yauch, aka MCA was a co-founder of the Beastie Boys, one of the all-time greatest Hip-Hop groups ever! After a long battle with cancer he has passed away at 48. May he rest in peace!

MCA was a tireless defender of human rights and fighter for the oppressed.

In this video award,(h/t:Reza Aslan) he speaks prophetic words in 1998 about the cycle of violence that the USA was engaging in across the globe, calling out the unreasonable hatred against Muslims and Arabs (see 6:35):

Transcript of what MCA said at the awards:

“In addition to thanking everybody who worked on all the videos and all the people who have worked with us throughout the years, it’s kind of a rare opportunity that one gets to speak to this many people at once. So, if you guys would forgive me, I would just like to speak my mind on a couple of things. I think it was a real mistake that the US chose to fire missiles into the Middle East. I think that was a huge mistake and I think it’s very important that the United States start to look towards non-violent means to solving conflicts because those bombings in the middle east were thought of as retaliation by the terrorists, and if we thought of what we did as retaliation, certainly we are going to find more retaliation from the people of the Middle East, from terrorists specifically I should say because most Middle Eastern people are not terrorists, and that’s another thing America needs to think about; Its racism. Racism that comes from America towards Muslim peoples and Arabic peoples, and that’s something that has to stop. The United States has to start respecting people from the Middle East in order to find a solution that has been building for many years.”

I love the Beastie Boys and Sure Shot was -and still is- one of the most mentally-ill songs for me to date! Check out their snl performance, it is *the* definition of raw hiphop! I taped that as a kid and I use to watch it over and over till the vhs started making noises lol. I gotta admit that I never knew about THIS video of him though; I am absolutely taken aback and completely humbled. Wow I don’t even know what to say. He was awesome either way, but that is awesome on a whole level of its own and I wish I had the chance to thank him. man :’(

I met him at a Tibet function in New York City when he was soaring to success. He was the most humble, unassuming, average, quiet, shy yet approachable, his eyes were so clear, so compassionate, and this was so very long ago. I spoke with him about some of what we were doing. In addition to what he did for pescurted refugees, what he did after 9/11 to raise money and help those affected who were least likely to get help was amazing. SO much money poured into NY after 9/11 and ended up in the hands of those who absolutely did not need it, it was like pigs at the trough, people who were positioned to skim the cream. Adam quietly filled the void. I am so very sorry for his loss, but especially wife and his daughter. In their too short union, I know how tirelessly she also worked behind the scenes. Much comfort to you, we light candles for the 49 days for him.

Don’t tell Obama who apparently this week doesn’t like Jews because he didn’t acknowledge this death quick enough:

“I bet a lot of people imagined that I’m some old, married, pale dude, and not a young, single, brown dude. :-)

I enjoy getting people to guess my age/nationality/job and so on. I was once thought to be a middle aged Chinaman which was pretty funny :-P

“I’m old and palish, but have not been married in thirty-four years.”

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. :-) It’s just that I get the impression that’s what people imagine that I am on the various websites I post on. Also, Michael Elwood is a very common Anglo-American name (I know from experience, because genealogy is a hobby of mine). Someone might google the name and think that I’m one of those other Michael Elwoods, like that singer from Texas.

@racoon:Please stop telling cock and bull stories about your Muslim heroes. They would be as evil as you find them today. Why don’t you quote your prophet who cut the throats of about 900 Jews of Quraisa tribe? He must have killed humanity 900 times according to Sura3:51.I have read about your Umar bin Khitab.Him and others were all ferocious wolves of Allah. You can’t even explain as to how your Prophet flew from Mecca to far of Mosque{must be at North Pole}and then to seventh heaven to see Allah{The Spirit}face to face on a donkey with the face of a woman. He must have been the 7th century’s first astronaut with no eye witness .Um Hani ,his cousin tells that he lay beside her all night. There is only one verse Sura 17:1 to cover his night journey although he spent the night with Abu Talib’s daughter Um Hani. You have no legs of truthful knowledge to stand on except DECEPTION.Father Butros Zakria could educate you about Islam more.He is an Arab from Egypt.

“@Michael, I don’t know why, but with the wisdom you sometimes show through your posts, I could have sworn you were much older,(lol). So we’re about the same age then, I was born in 1981.”

I bet a lot of people imagined that I’m some old, married, pale dude, and not a young, single, brown dude. :-)
