Sam Harris, “Profile the Muslim Looking People!”

Posted on 02 May 2012 by Haddock

Sam Harris continues the absurdist act that he has something intelligent to say when it comes to topics other than Neuroscience. We also learn that he possesses a 9mm, and travels with 75 rounds of ammunition, if the religion-bashing industry doesn’t work out maybe he can be the new spokesman for the NRA?

In a recent blog post, the pop Atheist guru writes that “we” should specifically profile Muslims at airports, and “be honest about it.” He is sick of the “tyranny of fairness” in which airport security searches people randomly when we all know that it’s the “Mooslims” who want to kill everyone on the plane. He concedes that he hasn’t “had to endure the experience of being continually profiled…”, and that he would find it “frustrating” if he had, but if someone looks like they may commit a crime (based on their ethnic appearance), they should be targeted for extra scrutiny.He uses the comedian Ben Stiller’s appearance as an example:

“But if someone who looked vaguely like Ben Stiller were wanted for crimes against humanity, I would understand if I turned a few heads at the airport. However, if I were forced to wait in line behind a sham search of everyone else, I would surely resent this additional theft of my time.”

Attempting to speak on behalf of the very people he wants profiled, he implies that Muslims should “welcome” profiling, at the very least it would “save them time!”

He goes on;

We should profile Muslims, or anyone who looks like he or she could conceivably be Muslim, and we should be honest about it.

Maybe Sam will want Muslims to wear crescent and star badges so as to be identified as “Muslim?” By saying “conceivably be Muslim” Sam is really saying any Brown, Middle Eastern or South Asian looking person, perhaps someone with a turban?

In a very poor attempt to soften the racialist tone, he adds this caveat;

And, again, I wouldn’t put someone who looks like me entirely outside the bull’s-eye (after all, what would Adam Gadahn look like if he cleaned himself up?)… (emphasis added)

As with most advocates of procedures that single out specific people for harassment, Sam Harris himself doesn’t have to experience the frustration that comes from this harassment. It’s easy to say, “Muslims should just cooperate and make it easier on themselves and everybody else” when one doesn’t have to experience such situations, multiple times, themselves.

He recounts earlier in the blog post an ironic experience he had at the airport whereby he “accidentally” smuggled nearly 75 rounds of ammunition past the inspectors, while a three-year old was momentarily taken from her family so that her sandals could be inspected.

I once accidentally used a bag for carry-on in which I had once stored a handgun—and passed through three airport checkpoints with nearly 75 rounds of 9 mm ammunition.

Question: What the hell is Sam Harris doing with 75 rounds of ammunition?

As of today (May 1st), he has added an addendum to his blog, complaining that some people didn’t take too kindly to his simply presenting the “facts” as he sees them. One of those basic “facts” is;

“…that, in the year 2012, suicidal terrorism is overwhelmingly a Muslim phenomenon. If you grant this, it follows that applying equal scrutiny to Mennonites would be a dangerous waste of time.”

He must have not read the report which stated that only 6% of terrorist acts committed in the United States from 1980-2005 years were committed by Muslims, and that even in 2012 an American is more likely to get struck by lightning than to be killed/hurt by a Muslim terrorist.

He goes on;

“1. When I speak of profiling “Muslims, or anyone who looks like he or she could conceivably be Muslim,” I am not narrowly focused on people with dark skin. In fact, I included myself in the description of the type of person I think should be profiled (twice). To say that ethnicity, gender, age, nationality, dress, traveling companions, behavior in the terminal, and other outward appearances offer no indication of a person’s beliefs or terrorist potential is either quite crazy or totally dishonest.”

Well that’s a sigh of relief! It’s not “just” dark-skinned Muslims that he wants to be profiled, but all Muslims! What universalistic spirit!

It has already been established that the more “Muslim” a person looks at the airport, the less likely they are to attempt anything violent on the plane. It simply would make no sense for a person to raise a thousand red flags in the minds of airport security, before they even board the plane. The entire point of a terrorist is to accomplish their goal, not to raise the suspicions of everyone around them before they get the chance to do so.

Since the stereotypical image of a Muslim in the minds of many is that of a “dark-skinned man of the Orient,” Muslim profiling is for all practical purposes racial profiling.

Juan Cole wrote about this on his blog nearly a year ago, when two Muslim clerics were forced to exit a plane because the pilot refused to fly if they were still on board;

“The terrorist costume is a simulated reality, circulated in Hollywood and countless news broadcasts, that evokes a causal relation between appearance and action. The terrorist costume is familiar to nearly all Americans: a thick beard, an ashen robe, brown skin, sandals holding dirty feet, and some sort of headgear, usually a turban (Sikh style, of course). The terrorist wearing this costume often sports a Qu’ran, so the audience can be certain that he is a Muslim.

Yet the acts of terrorism that have been committed by radicals of Muslim heritage involved perpetrators, like Mohamed Atta, who didn’t at all resemble the image of the Hollywood terrorist. Rahman and Zaghloul dressed in a way that set off alarms in some of their American co-passengers because the latter entertained Orientalist fantasies. Ironically, Muslim-American clerics are among the more law-abiding people in the country.”

Harris’s pro-profiling views are not shocking to anyone who knows his history of loonieness. Harris after all is the same unprincipled and bigoted individual, who has, as Bob Pitt noted;

backed Geert Wilders, joined the hysterical campaign against the so-called Ground Zero mosque and claimed that “the people who speak most sensibly about the threat that Islam poses to Europe are actually fascists.”

    “Muslims know full well that Christians or Jews or Hindus or Atheists are not going to engange in a suicide mission, and the government has no obligation to pretend otherwise.”

    No you ignoramus, we know full well they’ll just carpet a nations on false claims, invade, occupy and kill more then a millions of them, poisoning millions more with depleted uranium and call it liberation. Can I start racially profiling you now? White alert, anyone?
    On “suicide terrorism” Nathan Hale, the executed American spy’s last words were, “My only regret is that I have but one life to give for my country.” Ever heard of the Tamil Tigers, dipstick?

  • Peter

    I don ‘t think Harris can be considered a neocon because he is far to the right of Bush

    He’s only to the right of Bush on some selected issues.
    Ofcourse no REAL atheist is going to agree with George Bush that Islam is a “religion of peace” for instance.

    Someone really needs to do some reading on suicide terrorism.

    Perhaps then you could give me examples of christian suicide attacks in the last couple of years.
    Just last week, there were muslim suicide attacks in Kabul, Somalia, Syria and Iraq.
    Oh yeah I know “the Tamil Tigers started it”. But they’re an issue in the hinterlands of Sri Lanka, not on Boston Airport.

    Geoff…

    Please tell us how you would pick out a Muslim in a crowd of people at an airport? Tell us, if someone ment to do harm to another in an airport and wanted to get away with it…tell us, would they dress like me? Would they be holding a Qur’an, and maybe a long beard? Maybe being dressed like the Saudi Royals?

    Tell us how ‘profiling’ to determine who is Muslim in an airport works? Do they simply go by the name on a ticket? How does that stop someone who has not officially changed his name, like Richard Reid? In fact, my family name is not Arab origin…and if I didnt dress in hijab, I dont look Arab, how would someone know I am Muslim?

    You see Geoff how on so many levels, profiling doesnt work?

    Have you all ever given any thought that, defining your enemy by the way he looks is a weapon he can use against you?

    Honestly…it seems that Usama bin Laden reached his goal sometimes, seeing people actually support dividing people into good and bad groups. His goal was not to destroy the west by using bombs and guns…it was to create a foolish reaction of revenge, fear, hate, and bigotry…and make westerners turn on themselves out of fear.

    It seems Anders Brevik is simply the first fruits of the tree that Usama planted…all because he, like you, are deciding that some people dont deserve full humanity because of what they support, what religion they are, what family name they have or where they are from.

    In other words…people who support dividing people have already surrendered to the intention of bin Laden.

  • Quacks & Frauds

    To call Sam Harris a scientist is to degrade the word given his public support for kooky paranormal theories and psychic phenomena. Consider this interview with Salon magazine where he’s interrogated about his beliefs in telepathy:

    “Questioner: It sounds like you’re open-minded to the possibility of telepathy – things that we might classify as psychic. You’re saying it’s entirely possible that they might be true and science at some point will be able to prove them.”

    Sam Harris: Yeah, and there’s a lot of data out there that’s treated in most circles like intellectual pornography that attests to there being a real phenomenon here. I just don’t know. But I’ve had the kinds of experiences that everyone has had that seem to confirm telepathy or the fact that minds can influence other minds.

    Questioner: Tell me about one of those experiences.

    Sam Harris: Oh, just knowing who’s calling when that person hasn’t called you in years. The phone rings and you know who it is and it’s not your mother or your wife or someone who calls you every day. I’ve had many experiences like that. I know many people who’ve had even more bizarre experiences. But that does not rise to the level of scientific evidence. The only way to determine if it really exists is to look in a disinterested and sustained way at all of the evidence.”

    Read the whole interview and marvel at his cranky psuedo-science :

    Peter…

    How do you know a Jew, Christian, Hindu, or Muslim person just by looking at them? How do you know, for example that a person like Anders Brevik, would not board an airplane to murder as many people as he can for ‘sympathising with immigrants’?

    Peter…have you ever thought that if someone wanted to do harm to people in an airport, they dont actually have to get on the plane to do it? They could simply hurt people standing in line for the security measure?

    Of course not. The security check is simply a phycological tool to keep Americans in fear. It does nothing…it has stoped no terrorists, or attemped acts of terrorists, and divided Americans against each other, so that you would surrender your freedoms and privacy out of fear…as we can see from your post you support.

    Peter…just think. The evil Usama bin Laden, and his minions could not have possibly taken away anyone’s freedom of movement, your privacy, your rights, your guns, stolen the majority religion in your country to use it as a weapon against your women, your gay citizens, your minorities, and the institutions that support education, the elderly, the poor…without people who think like you, and the subject of this article…helping them.

    Peter…Usama bin Laden did not want to destroy America with bombs and guns…he wanted to destroy American ideals, values, intergaty, moral and ethical values, and replace it with fear, hate, and bigotry.

    If you belive that ‘racial profiling’ will work, you have done two things. First, when you define your enemy by the way he looks, you have given him a weapon to use against you…and secondly…unfortunatly for you…it shows you have surrendered to the intent of the terrorists, which is to promote thier denial of humanity to another.

    “Muslims know full well that Christians or Jews or Hindus or Atheists are not going to engange in a suicide mission, and the government has no obligation to pretend otherwise.”

    Oh deary, deary me. Someone really needs to do some reading on suicide terrorism.

  • Geoff Cavendish

    ‘Harris criticized the Bush administration’. You are right, I don ‘t think Harris can be considered a neocon because he is far to the right of Bush.

    On ethnic profiling

    “It’s wrong, and we will end it in America. In so doing, we will not hinder the work of our nation’s brave police officers. They protect us every day — often at great risk. But by stopping the abuses of a few, we will add to the public confidence our police officers earn and deserve.” –President George W. Bush, Feb. 27, 2001

    “This administration… has been opposed to racial profiling and has done more to indicate its opposition than ever in history. The President said it’s wrong and we’ll end it in America, and I subscribe to that. Using race… as a proxy for potential criminal behavior is unconstitutional, and it undermines law enforcement by undermining the confidence that people can have in law enforcement.” –Attorney General John Ashcroft, Feb. 28, 2002

    “It is not enough for moderate Muslims to say “not in our name.” They must now police their own communities. They must offer unreserved assistance to western governments in locating the extremists in their midst. They must tolerate, advocate, and even practice ethnic profiling.” –Sam Harris, Bombing Our Illusions, Huffington Post, Oct. 10, 2005

  • mjasghar

    The actual article is implicitly racist – he talks about the guy behind him (implying he shoul be profiled) as a typical Bollywood villain ie brown skinned
    I wonder if we could get in touch with the dalai llama – Harris is a big fan of Tibetan buddhism

  • Peter

    “Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens who were atheistic neoconservative ideologues”

    Hitchens was anti-Israel, Harris criticized the Bush administration.
    Ofcourse, any REAL atheist would be anti-Islam as well as anti-Christian.

    “Muslim people are of all different appearances Arab, African, Asian, White, etc.”

    They pretty much all have arab names. I know a white dude whith the name Frans and after his conversion to islam changed his name to “Faissal”. Probably the only airline terrorist since 9/11 without an arab name on his passport was Richard Reid aka Abdel Rahim. The name of the black african underwear bomber was Umar Farouk Abdulmutalla.

    “He implies that Muslims should “welcome” profiling, at the very least it would “save them time!”

    Look, the purpose of post-9/11 airport checks is to prevent planes from exploding, not to ease delicate sensibilities.
    If muslims prefer their lives more than their “honor”, sure they should welcome profiling.
    Muslims know full well that Christians or Jews or Hindus or Atheists are not going to engange in a suicide mission, and the government has no obligation to pretend otherwise.

  • DrM

    Using Harris’ “logic,” Muslims can racially profile white westerners for centuries of western terrorism.

  • Alpha Pat

    By Sam Harris’ logic we shouldn’t allow atheists to attain positions in power because they might impose Communism, restrict religious freedom, and force militaristic rule on the populace, as exhibited by Joseph Stalin, Chairman Mao, and Pol Pot.

    @Haddock

    I just saw a video on this. CardinalVirtues reiterates many of your points as well as comes up with good ones of his own. You should consider watching it.

    What do Sam Harris and Michelle Malkin have in common?

    What do you think?

  • Taliban

    Stupid Islam teaching create a lot of problem to the world. Islam is religious of stupid……………………..

    [Don't waste your time continuing to post your grammar-challenged spam on every thread. This is the only one that will be published. Ilisha]

  • Senor

    I wonder if Harris is a great friend and ally to the state of Israel.

  • Abdul-Rahman

    Like I said if Harris had his way he would certainly force his brand of militant atheism on everyone he could.

  • Abdul-Rahman

    Sam Harris is a xenophobe who would imposed his forced atheism on everyone if he could. Also his idea of profiling (something that doesn’t work in any context as vast amounts of studies have shown) supposed “Muslim looking” people is both xenophobic and hilariously retarded! Muslim people are of all different appearances Arab, African, Asian, White, etc. Also all one would need to do to avoid the profilers in Harris’ scenario would be to simply not look Muslim (what ever that means!)

    Also I think Harris is aware that anybody who is going to try to carry out any kind of action/attack is likely going to try to do everything in their power to not bring attention to themselves; further showing the ridiculousness of Harris’ “suggestion”.

  • Mustafa H.E.

    Sam Harris also said we should nuke the Middle East at one point and called those who do not suspect all Muslims and Middle Easterners as “ignorant”. I’m no atheist, but there’s a difference between Dawkins and his purely scientific approach, vs Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens who were atheistic neoconservative ideologues.

  • Sam Harris Is A Brilliant Psuedoscientist

    Why do you keep saying that Harris is a good scientist when he’s published no science book, no discoveries, no original findings, no work at all bearing on his academic discipline? His entire output is about chanting the highly original mantra that “God is Dead” and vilifying Muslims. That’s it. Period. Two of his books are theological. And two are very bad philosophy. There is no science work here at all.

    That’s not quite true. The man has published some things of interest to science: Like his belief in the truth of reincarnation and psychic phenomena for which he was castigated by James Randi among others. Dawkins is a scientist. You may disagree with his politics, but he does not push discredited superstition and fakery. Not so with Harris. I invite readers to examine the following links with care before you confer the authority of science on this professional quack and charlatan:

    Glad you recognize his idiocy but he`s not a brilliant scientist either by any measure.

  • Sir David Illuminati membership number 16.69

    Looked like one what ? I’m confused
    You can tell who is a muslim just by looking ?
    Have you applied for a job with homeland security ?

  • Reynardine

    When I was young, skinny, and suntanned, at least some people thought I “looked like one”. Now, they don’t think I “look like one.” You tell me what has changed (I never actually was “one”).

  • Geoff Cavendish

    “It is not enough for moderate Muslims to say “not in our name.” They must now police their own communities. They must offer unreserved assistance to western governments in locating the extremists in their midst. They must tolerate, advocate, and even practice ethnic profiling.” (Sam Harris, Bombing Our Illusions, 2005)

    So yes, Harris defends ETHNIC profiling.So he can say “When I speak of profiling “Muslims, or anyone who looks like he or she could conceivably be Muslim,” I am not narrowly focused on people with dark skin” all he wants, but it is just back-tracking and damage limitation. Harris is a disgrace.

  • Daniel

    One more reasons I find Sam Harris to be an arrogant, ignorant windbag. He may be a brilliant scientist, but beyond his area of expertise, he is an idiot and a bigot.
