What If They Were Muslim?: Pipe Bomb Found At North Belfast Church

The uptick in attempted bombings in Northern Ireland is causing concern that there will be a return to heightened sectarian conflict.

Another bomb has been discovered, this time in the grounds of a Presbyterian Church in North Belfast. (H/T: JD)

Can one imagine if Muslims had been behind this? It would be all over international media, and you can bet the anti-Islam haters would lump it in as one more attempted “Islamic terrorist” attack, but they would never call it “Christian terrorism”:

A suspect object discovered at a church in north Belfast has been declared a viable device, police have confirmed.

The pipe bomb was found in the grounds of the Ballysillan Presbyterian Church on the Crumlin Road area on Wednesday morning.

Evacuated residents have been allowed to return to their homes and the road has re-opened to traffic.

Chief Inspector Andrew Freeburn, North Belfast Area Commander, said the device was capable of causing injury or death to anyone in the vicinity.

“The people who carried this out have shown a callous disregard for everyone in our community, not least those local residents who have been inconvenienced through being evacuated.

“This incident will be fully investigated with view to bringing criminal charges against those responsible.”

SDLP Oldpark Councillor Nichola Mallon said the object was discovered during the cutting of grass on the grounds of the church.

She continued: “The people of North Belfast have seriously suffered through the years as a result of the brutality of the Troubles. They don’t want or need to live under the renewed threat and fear of disruption and attack as they have been increasingly forced to do in recent days.”

Im am a sudanese muslim and I think that the Northen Irish are my heroes , they fight to get the northern part of THEIR island back , to absorb it back to the motherland.
The queen needs to realize she doesn’t have the empire she used to and that the superpower she once knew is gone and a new era has dawned – one that will never accept this sectarian occupation .

Your points are well taken. Our “What if…” articles don’t get deep into a discussion about historical background, and in this case we didn’t remark on repression from Britain.

There is no doubt that Irish resistance to British hegemony has been demonized, Emperor’s intent here I think was to point out how, if the bomb had been planted by Muslims it would be attributed to Islam.

Love this site, but you guys need to learn a little bit about the history of Northern Ireland and the way the British government created and manipulated the conflict there. If you did, you would understand exactly what is happening in the Middle East because the strategy is the same.

The IRA is a long-standing bugaboo used to justify the police state in the UK and the coutinued occupation of NI, whose ancestry is a little older than the current anti-Muslim hysteria. The UK media has never been remiss in generating hysteria over the IRA as well as promoting anti-Irish American bigotry as Irish Americans are falsely blamed for creating the problem there by allegedly supporting the IRA.

You guys are trying hard to create a case that alleged Muslim terrorism is treated differently than that carried about the IRA or MI6 agents provocateurs, but in reality the media plays these events up the same way and for the same reasons.

First they came for the Irish, then they came for the Muslims, and now they are coming for the Brits, starting with the working class, exactly as many have predicted for years.

mmmm Are you suggesting the Gerry Adams is not a republican ? As part of the agreement for the IRA to cease violence reform of the police force was/is a priority. The news paper artical you linked to stated ” sinn fein will support the PSNI ” ( PSNI = police service of Northern Ireland)
I admire the bravery of the IRA to tread the road to peace and democratic change . Those who promte violence where ever it comes from are just plain wrong .

The police in NI are better than the dark days of the b specials who were so biased that the catholic community welcomed British soldiers in their place .
The new northern Island police service is much improved and even has current Republican politians on the management board
