Exactly – I do not know if I have actually *read* a piece moaning that there is something sinister about the lack of Muslims in the X Factor, but it struck me too, Zakariya, as a blog post waiting to be written by Geller or someone. There is no pleasing some people.

Actually, Abdul-Rahman, your analogy isn’t that far off. Debbie Schlussel’s entire complaint is that Zayn Malik is a Muslim. Not only is he unapologetic about his Islamic beliefs, but he has the audacity to be a cheesy pop star with a multicultural audience. People like Schlussel and the other Islamophobes not only hate Islam (and Muslims) but they hate the fact that we can assimilate, participate in the wider culture and, perhaps worst of all from their point of view, gain popularity amonsgt non-Muslims. It makes Muslims and Islam look ‘good.’ Every Muslim who ISN’T a terrorist, who ISN’T a member of al-Qaeda, is bad for them.

Personally I find the whole affair rather silly myself. After all, people like Debbie Schlussel and her ilk constantly harp on about Muslims not assimilating, or all being terrorists. But when we DO go mainstream, then she complains about ‘stealth jihad.’ And Zayn Malik, by all accounts, sounds like a fairly liberal Muslim. I mean, pop music, girlfriends and all. There are plenty of other Muslims who do the same things (myself included), and its hardly any different from other British teenagers, but not really a sign of fundamentalism. So there’s no pleasing her. The only acceptable Muslim in her mind is one who doesn’t practice Islam, observe Ramazan, read the Qur’an, eat halal or go to a mosque… at which point it stops being Islam and becomes… I don’t know, something else altogether.

But then, it makes sense, because as I’ve said many times before, it is not just anti-Muslim sentiments. This same hatred extends to pretty much anyone from the Middle East or South Asia. We have seen examples of Islamophobes physically assaulting everyone from Copts to Greeks to Sikhs to even Latinos who ‘look too Muslim.’ They have jumped on stories in which non-Muslims like Omar Sharif did something bad and tried to vilify Islam. And I suspect that even were we to convert en masse, they would still hate us because of our accents and skin tones. This is a big part of the reason why I say that American Muslims should NOT try to appease the Islamophobes. They are basically just bullies, and giving them even so much as an inch is tantamount to surrender. But more to the point, why should I want to be friends with someone with such irrational hatred in their heart?

Hell, even more to the point than that, why is Debbie Schlussel even a national news figure in the first place? Her only real claim to fame is running yet another Islamophobic blog, and people like Geller and Spencer are better at that than her. At least they can parlay their writings into cash. Schlussel doesn’t even really have that going for her. It’s rather akin to Fred Phelps; the only reason he got where he is is because people have bent over backwards to accommodate him and MAKE him a celebrity.

I found a pic of him wearing a red poppy too – sorry, I’m not sure how far this is worn in the US, but its connotations are of course patriotism and support for British troops.

And just because he tweets about Ramadan, means girls will convert? LOL.

Alot of Muslims think it is haram (not allowed) to play, sing, or listen to music.
