Dutch Upper House Rejects Ban on Ritual Slaughter

Posted on 21 June 2012 by Emperor

Dutch upper house rejects ban on ritual slaughter

The Dutch upper house, the Senate, on Tuesday rejected a bill that would have banned the ritual slaughter of animals and had been criticised by both Muslim and Jewish groups.

The bill, proposed by the small Party for the Animals, stipulates that livestock must be stunned before being slaughtered, contrary to Muslim halal and Jewish kosher laws, which require animals to be conscious.

The lower house of parliament passed the bill a year ago, leaving a loophole saying religious groups could continue ritual slaughter if they proved it was no more painful than other methods of slaughter. But the Senate rejected the bill on Tuesday by 51 votes to 21, meaning it cannot become law.

Dutch Muslims, mostly of Turkish and Moroccan origin, had complained they felt stigmatised by the measure.

European Union regulations require animals to be stunned before slaughter but allow exceptions for ritual slaughter, which the European Court of Human Rights has ruled is a religious right.

@Steve, I hope you realize the contradiction in your last comment.

  • Steve

The lady in the niqab didn’t offend me, I just found her face covering to be ridiculous.

    Mosques don’t offend me.
I don’t like halal or kosher slaughter being allowed as exceptions to laws.
I don’t believe in mutilating the genitals of children.
    Muslims don’t offend me.

I am not pushing atheism on anybody.

  • http://aayjay.wordpress.com AJ

    Steve,

For you, your atheism is the norm, religion is an exception.

For me, my religion is the norm, atheism is an exception.

I am willing to live with exceptions.

We can both survive if we both stop pushing our values on each other.

I don’t harp upon how atheists do this wrong and that wrong and how their personal lives are shaped. Do I harp upon anywhere what you are doing wrong, why are you not worshipping a deity, why are you not eating halal meat, why is your foreskin not taken off? Have I?

You harp all day upon how the Muslims offend you, the lady in the niqab offends you, the mosques offend you, the halal slaughter offends you, the foreskin on Muslim men’s penises offends you, your entire premise of being on LW is how Muslims offend you, I am defending myself here, you are the one offending.

Shut up and we can both survive but if you want to force your values on me, I will force my values on you.

For a long time, religionists have been on the defensive but if you don’t stop pushing atheism down our throats, the tides will change and you won’t like it.

  • Steve

AJ, we can boil it all down to: you demand exceptions because of your religion, I don’t demand any exceptions.

  • http://aayjay.wordpress.com AJ

“It’s not for you to stop what others can or can’t do.”

Exactly! Try telling that to Steve. I was a trying to parrot a religious version of the atheist discourse he does here on LW so that he gets a dose of his own medicine.

“It’s a shame I can’t stop you or other people who consume pork from eating it.”

I eat pork all the time. I’ve never had Cysticercosis.

It’s not for you to stop what others can or can’t do.

  • http://Aayjay.wordpress.com AJ

Okay so the net result of our recent exchanges is:

Since I live in Saudi Arabia you can hate niqabi women

Since I live in Saudi Arabia you can propose non – religious slaughter for all

Since I live in Saudi Arabia you can oppose mosques in London

Since I live in Saudi Arabia men can send bomb threats to mosques in Tennessee

Since I live in Saudi Arabia you can oppose circumcision in Muslim men

And so on and so forth. Interesting logic you got going there Steve – you can engage in bigotry and deny people in your country, religious freedom, because I live in Saudi Arabia.

  • Steve

@AJ, where is sharia implemented for all?

    Where you live?

  • http://Aayjay.wordpress.com AJ

“I don’t like the fact that a religious exemption is available for slaughter methods, I believe in one law for all.”

How about I issue this statement – it’s a copy of yours with non-religious tones replaced with religious ones.

I don’t like the fact that a non-religious exemption is available for slaughter methods, I believe in one law for all.

Or maybe we can make it more religion specific.

I don’t like the fact that a non-halal exemption is available for slaughter methods, I believe in one Shariah law for all.

    How does that sound?

  • Steve

I don’t like the fact that a religious exemption is available for slaughter methods, I believe in one law for all.

However, while such exemptions exist many places my wife and I like to eat at are halal, such as many of the bangladeshi restaurants.

  • http://aayjay.wordpress.com AJ

    Steve,

Didn’t you just say that you dislike the fact that a religious exemption was allowed for halal slaughter? So why are you consuming halal when you feel that it contributes towards the animal’s pain and suffering? Or are you just a hypocrite?

Anyway, I am not done yet. Pork causes Neurocysticercosis which “is one of the leading causes of adult-onset seizures and is estimated to cause as many as 50% of adult-onset seizure cases in developing countries where T solium is endemic.”

It’s a shame I can’t stop you or other people who consume pork from eating it.

  • Steve

@AJ, I often eat halal meat.

My wife owns a bakery and uses halal lamb in some of the meat products.

  • http://aayjay.wordpress.com AJ

    @Steve,

It’s a shame that I can’t force halal meat down your throat.

  • Steve

“Exactly how is this a “religious” exception Steve?”

Read the last paragraph of the article.

“EVERYONE should treat and slaughter animals according the laws of what is humane.”

    Indeed.

  • NurAlia

    Steve…

    You are right.

All animals should be treated well. not penned or treated un naturally. They should not be subjected to chemicals only to insure ‘high yield’ or be slaughtered in such a way as they suffer, or feel pain.

So I totally agree…EVERYONE should treat and slaughter animals according the laws of what is humane.

  • Khalid

Exactly how is this a “religious” exception Steve?

Cruelty? please: we all know what happens at those battery cage farmers, who never stun their produce, kick them around, raise them in filth and overfeed their livestock till most collapse.

Saying a couple of Jewish prayers or killing it facing Mecca will not affect the content of the meat; I promise.

  • Steve

It’s a shame that laws have religious exceptions.

  • mindy1

    YAY good for them :D
