Police Blotter Bob and the Banning of Irshad Manji’s “Allah, Liberty & Love” in Malaysia

Posted on 02 June 2012 by Haddock

by Haddock

Firstly, I want to point out that I do not support the Malaysian government’s decision to ban the Malay translation of Irshad Manji’s latest book, considering I believe in near-absolute freedom of speech; and, while Manji is a sell-out and useful tool who routinely belittles and degrades Muslims for profit, she should have the right to speak her mind without censorship.

The drone-like commenters at JihadWatch have expressed nothing short of glee at the latest news that the Malaysian translation of Irshad “Muslims helped make the Holocaust happen” Manji’s most recent book, Allah, Liberty & Love was banned in Malaysia for containing words that “insulted Islam.” This supposedly “proves” how backward all 1.5 billion Mooslims are! After some political parties and organizations complained about Manji’s appearance in the country, the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) decided to review the book to find out if there was any “offensive” content. They declared that some of the material “insulted Islam”, and was subsequently banned by the Home Ministry. The Malaysian Insider quotes the Ministry,

“This is because the book which is believed to have elements that can deviate Muslims from their faith, Islamic teachings and elements which insulted Islam and has received numerous complaints,” he said in a statement here.”

And,

“The ministry had received a report from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and based on its findings, the contents had elements that can confuse the public and contained words that insults Islam.”

The IDD felt the need to point out that they can only advise the Ministry with their interpretation of Islamic values, but cannot enact laws themselves. This doesn’t take away the fact that censorship was at play here, but it provides a nuance that Islamophobes typically ignore; most Muslims don’t believe in a theocracy. This piece to the puzzle was unsurprisingly missing from Jihad Watch’s “report.”

Police blotter Bob, barely able to contain his joy at having another opportunity to bash Muslims, writes;

“Wait a minute. Isn’t Islam supposed to be completely compatible with moderation, democracy, and so on? Apparently the allegedly mild, modern and moderate Muslims of Malaysia didn’t get the memo. Or the fact that crowds of Malaysian Muslims haven’t openly called for her death (yet) should be considered ‘moderation’.”

Yet he conveniently leaves out the fact that the publisher of the translation, ZI Publications, is taking “legal action” against the government while using their own interpretation of the Malaysian Constitution and Islam to do so. Apparently they feel that “free inquiry” is “something which Islam itself cherishes.” But what do they know about their own religion?! They’re doing something that makes Islam look good, so naturally they must be practicing “taqiyya”, or simply don’t understand how evil their religion so obviously is.

“The English version of Irshad Manji’s book, Allah, Liberty & Love, has been published since June 2011 and there has been no issue taken with the book… until we published a Malay translation of the book (Allah, Kebebasan & Cinta),” said Ezra Zaid, director and owner of ZI.” (Emphasis added)

And,

Either way, we published this book in the spirit of free inquiry – incidentally, something which Islam itself cherishes – and acting strictly in accordance with our right to free speech and expression as guaranteed by Article 10 (1)(a) of the Federal Constitution,…” (Emphasis added)

But we all know the Islamophobic modus operandi. When Muslims ban or censor a book, they’re showing their true colors, and this proves that Islam is demonic; but when Muslims say Islam does not promote the banning of books, they’re practicing “taqiyya”, so they can’t be trusted. (Ironically, you will never hear Islamophobes condemn Geert Wilders for wanting to ban the Qur’an, or any concern on their behalf when a number of books have been banned in the USA). This is why there is overwhelming silence over at Jihad Watch about this element to the story. “What?! Muslims standing up for free-speech while still practicing their religion?! This is impossible! The only Muslims who can stand up for freedom and democracy are those who oppose their own religion and sell out their co-religionists in the name of profit!”

This is why the more stealthy Islamophobes of the world love people like Irshad Manji. She says everything that they want to say, but can’t without (rightly) being called a bigot. But since she is a self- professed Muslim, all they need to do is quote her words and say, “this comes from a Muslim! One of your own people says this about you, so I can’t be a bigot just by quoting her words!”

This is one of the oldest tactics in the book. This same line was said by the more “diplomatic” American anti-Catholics of the 19th century and the anti-Semites of the 20th century; and now it is said by the Islamophobes. And since this dance takes two to tango, each era saw its share of self-declared turncoats, appeasers and traitors of their identities. But just like most of America’s famous anti-Catholics and anti-Semites have been forgotten by the public, so are its team players who played the role of the “native informant.”

Does anybody remember Benjamin Freedman? He was a self-declared ex-Jew turned anti-Semite conspiracy theorist who claimed to have been one of the most influential proponents of “Zionism” in the United States. He did not limit himself to critiques of Zionism but rather engaged in classic “Jews run the world hate-mongering,” i.e. The Protocols of the Elders of Zion shtick.

He was very popular among the anti-communist “Patriot” groups in the 1940s- 50’s because many of these people were also anti-Semitic. So to have a guy who claimed to be an ethnic Jew saying all of these bad things about his “own people” was a great thing for them since it gave their views a certain type of credibility that they normally wouldn’t have had as non-Jews. Yet today, Mr. Freedman is hardly remembered except among right-wing extremists and neo-Nazis who post some of his speeches on YouTube.

It is likely that the same fate as Freedman’s diminished remembrance awaits Irshad Manji, Walid Shoebat, Brigitte Gabriel, Nonie Darwish, Kamal Saleem, Ibn Warraq, and a whole list of other Muslim “native informants,” “fake ex-Muslims” and “fake ex-terrorists.”

    Drm, I wouldn’t call that being paid by Zionists. The Palestinian source mentioned she was paid by Christian Zionists but didn’t provide any evidence, She accepted a free trip to Israel, I would too, that doesn’t mean anyone could then say, i’m in the pay of Israel. You’re using the guilt by association thing. Manji had formed her opinions before the Zionist groups saw to exploit it. You can say they exploit it, yes, that is true, but then so does every liberal, atheist, lesbian group. One could just as well say, she is in the pay of sexual deviants then, or liberals or atheists.

  • khushboo

    Nur is right in that she’s a hypocrite not going after the Christian pastor who wanted homosexuals electricuted. However, she means nothing and is a petty little minion. What I want to know is who does she work for?

  • DrM

    TimothyH,

    Canadian Zionists for starters, followed by US neocons and then israel itself.

    Have you noticed that no one actually has commented on the topic of the book? Not even Muslims…but they are ready to defend this woman and her not getting banned in Malaysia.

    The book is about acceptance of homosexual lifestyles in the context of Islam. She claims that she can be a Muslim and a lesbian, and although NEVER quoting the Qur’an on this topic, she condemns Muslims for not accepting, critisizing, and rejecting homosexuality and the lifestyle choices homosexuals make.

    I personally am not against homosxual behavior, as long as it is PRIVATE and CONSENTUAL. However, I dont tolarate well, people telling me that because I dont accept homosexuality, I am evil, hateful, or a bigot. It is just not for me, and certianly Islam speaks against it.

    What made me more angry with this woman is…she is CANADIAN, and lives in CANADA. On the same day of her lackluster permotion of this filth, a Christian pastor was condemning homosexuals to electridied fences until they all die off. Where in the hell was her voice on this?

    She cam here for a publicity stunt that didnt work the way she thought. Just on principle, I hope the book stays banned. We are already done with westerners trying to force thier ways on us, our culture, and our beliefs. I ask this women to be brave and try to sell that filth she wrote to the pastor and his congregation one Sunday.

    Then, you will see that a REAL threat to her lifestyle is.

    I don’t like it when any book is banned. That being said, HER being banned from the country (not her book) would be excellent.

  • Heinz Catsup

    @Solid Snake

    So true. I mean to betray your culture/heritage/religion for your own selfish benefits is rather despicable. Even if you aren’t proud of it or do not care much for being born into it at the very least don’t use it to further your own personal agendas & the agendas of others.

  • TimothyH

    DrM
    is based on working for Zionists who themselves suppress free speech cannot be overlooked.

    Which Zionists does she work for?

  • DrM

    Solid Snake,

    Well said, but I support the Malaysian government’s decision, they shouldn’t even have let this charlatan in. The fact that Manji’s “success” is based on working for Zionists who themselves suppress free speech cannot be overlooked. She has never spoken out against Daniel Pipes’ Campus Watch, or Zionist antics at the Khalil Gibran academy, in fact she has whole heatedly supported Israel and US imperial wars in the region.
    Supporters of terrorism like her need to be kept out.

    Thanks. I found out about it awhile ago.

    @CriticalDragon,

    That was a great compilation – especially loved the theme song used by David Reilly!

    “And this is different from Leftists and Muslims (such as the Iranian government) quoting or even inviting Jews to speak on causes and therefore they can’t be Antisemitic because they have Jews who agree with them, how exactly?

    Loons don’t do logic.”

    Its not different inpeace, thats the point. Did you bother to read the article?

  • Benjamin Taghiov

    InPeace,

    You twist the tenor of what is being said here. Rather, the Jews who are being quoted/invited to speak are in fact sometimes themselves anti-semites – in exactly the same way that these turncoat ‘muslims’ in actuality are islam-haters. So, when some Iranian institution invites a Jewish anti-semite, to further anti-semitic polemic, then yes, that Iranian institution is anti-semitic as well.

  • Géji

    .. “Wait a minute. Isn’t Islam supposed to be completely compatible with moderation, democracy, and so on? ”

    Hallelujah at-last, very well said !!! Then lets talk OPENLY about – in Euro/US medias and so – American state terrorism, and whats the reason in their support of the ‘Jewish’ state Apartheid/Ethnic-Cleansing process … shall we ?? … without anybody getting fired and loosing their job ?!!

  • JT

    InPeace/JihadBob,

    By taking issue only with a minor part of this article, I take it you accept the main point of the article that Police Blotter Bob and other Islamophobes are deliberately deceptive when it comes to news stories such as these.

  • http://danielibnzayd.wordpress.com/ Daniel Ibn Zayd

    We need to make a difference between what is expressed (by controlling parties) and what is lived (by populations). Come to Lebanon, where banning of books is pretty much shared by the various Councils and Patriarchates. Then go into any bookstore in Beirut and find the books supposedly “banned”. As you say, completely unfair to judge the people by the acts of those in control.

  • InPeace

    But since she is a self- professed Muslim, all they need to do is quote her words and say, “this comes from a Muslim! One of your own people says this about you, so I can’t be a bigot just by quoting her words!”

    @Jack Cope

    I think she will do some good, regardless of whats in it, if anti Muslim bigots want to insist the censorship of her book proves how intolerant Muslims and Islam are, and the Malaysian government does decided to allow the publication of her book, despite it being offensive to them, than they’ll have egg on their faces, especially if they decide to allow the publication of free speech grounds. If the Malaysian supreme court rules that they have to allow the publication of the book despite that, or if the their government decides to allow its publication in the spirit of free inquiry, expect Islamophobes to ignore it, or come up with some pathetic reason why we shouldn’t care.

  • Solid Snake

    Books, films/movies,games, and websites are banned in every country all over the world including in the Western world. While I despise Islamophobes and their hate (maybe because their ultimate goal is to exterminate me and my belief system) I hate with a passion these so called ‘native informers’. These are people who betray their own people/coreligionists for their own selfish needs while not caring about the consequences brought about by their actions. They didn’t care when Anders Breivek mercilessly ended the lives of innocent teenagers due to the direct influence of the Islamophobia industry, an industry that they are apart of. I would bet that they would not care if the same thing happened to Muslims, just as long as they have a nice comfortable flat in whatever Western country far away from danger. I usually dont express my hate for people/ideas etc because it is pointless without context and explanation, but these people make my blood boil.
    Regarding her book, all emotions aside I believe they should publish it. During the Islamic Golden Age free thought was encouraged and debates took place in every university across the land. So It should be published and then refuted and thrown away.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/GargamelGold?feature=mhee CriticalDragon1177

    @Haddock

    I think we can be pretty certain that if Manji actually wins and her book is published, over there, Spencer, and others like him will ignore the fact. It won’t help their fear monger. People will have a harder time believing his “stealth jihad” nonsense if a Muslim Majority country, allows the publication of her work.

  • http://thepenofawanderingstranger.com/personal/ Jack Cope

    The Irshad Manji thing is a bit of a non-issue over here, the lack of comments on the article cited in the Malaysian Insider just goes to show (that paper often manages to get thousands of comments on articles). Hardly any person will have ever heard of her anyway and this does smell a bit like a marketing ploy. While I have seen some more ‘liberal’ Muslims welcoming her this is no doubt mostly due to the fact that she is very new out here and isn’t dragging along the history of what she has done in the past. I think JAKIM are more wised up to that when they made their decision though, of course, politics were at play.

    I’d welcome the publication of her book, in part just to point out how daft it is, but also because despite her attitude I’m sure she does have some good ideas in there. Somewhere… I’m sure :-S

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Ma%CA%BFarri#Philosophy Arab Atheist – ملحد عربي

    Good article Haddock. I am not sure I read anything posted by you on LW before, but this article is really good. while censorship can be stupid, Islamophobes want to associate with Islam whatever bad things come their way.

    In 2004, Lebanon banned Brown’s The Da Vinci Code at the request of the Catholic Media Center. I wonder of that turns Christianity a despotic anti-free-speech religion!

    If Islamophobes just apply the logic they apply to Islam to other Abrahamic religions, they would not like their findings.

  • Khalid

    The Muslims did not make the holocaust happen.

    Hitler was a very devout christian and made this quite clear in many speeches and quotes.

    “The Mohammedan religion would have been far more compatible with us than christianity with it’s meekness and flabiness” was quote manufactured by the Nazi minister of armaments who’s book was so criticized by the academic community for its lack of awarness and coverage of Nazi atrocities, so will the “supposed” negative views of christianity Hitler gave in private.

    What will always remain adamant are the quotes of Hitlers devotion to Christ and his praise of Jesus and sanction of Nazi war crimes by the Bible including the massive support from the Vatican and the tons of Christians in Europe not to mention the insular Christian education which heavily shaped the views of Nazi soldiers and the FORCED conversion of entire battalions.
