Vlaams Belang offers ‘burqa bounty’

(Reuters) – Belgian right-wingers have offered to pay a 250 euros ($310) bounty to anyone who reports a veiled woman to police, they said on Tuesday, in the wake of face veil riots in Brussels.

Filip Dewinter, a senior figure within Vlaams Belang, a right-wing party, told Reuters the riots had made police apprehensive about enforcing the burqa ban and that the payment should put pressure on authorities to further enforce it.

“It’s a textile prison for the women who have to live under it,” he said.

It comes after protesters hurled bins and metal barriers at a Brussels police station last week after a Muslim woman was arrested for refusing to remove her face veil, or niqab.

A Brussels police spokesman said he was unaware of the money being offered, but said any officer who sees a woman wearing a niqab would issue a penalty.

“When someone is breaking the law we always have to intervene, demonstrations or no, the niqab is prohibited,” he said.

Women in Belgium risk a maximum fine of 150 euros if they wear a full face veil in public. Belgium and France both banned the wearing of full veils in public last year.

Dewinter said he was not aware how many people had already responded to the offer of a bounty.

A spokeswoman for Belgium’s federal police said the legality of the bounty was a question for the judiciary, but if someone felt insulted by it they could file a complaint with the police.

Police in Belgium are investigating last week’s riots and arrested 13 members of the Islamist group Sharia4Belgium on Sunday, the police spokesman said.

Sharia4Belgium was not immediately available to comment.

    @ dan25 I hope it is not me you are refering to as an hypocrite. Any woman who choose to walk naked that are problem not mine and at the same time any woman who choose to cover up so be it for her.

    “If hiding faces is such a problem arrest people wearing the wrong motorcycle helmets”

    The ban also covers all motorcycle helmets which cover the face and are worn in public places (except, of course, when riding a motorcycle)

  • H. Torrance Griffin

    Once more, the idea that one must insure the freedom of women by dictating what they wear fails to make sense. If hiding faces is such a problem arrest people wearing the wrong motorcycle helmets (not to mention just about everyone during a bad winter).

    That being said, the riots do nothing to help.

    I wonder how many here who condemn Belgium’s burwa laws will also condemn Iran’s forced veiling as well as Indonesia’s attempts to ban miniskirts. Of course, many of you are hypocrites in demanding the West to succumb to the demands of Muslims while turning a blind eye to your own countries. Face it, you’re not special living in kuffarland so if the West is so haram then pack your bags and move to a Muslim country of your choice so you wouldn’t have to deal with this.

    And do a lot of you really believing that covering your face makes you modest? I guess anyone who doesn’t cover their face and head is naked by the logic of the retards on here. No wonder why so many come to the defense of misogynistic Muslim men that feel it’s okay to beat women who don’t cover themselves, like the hypocrite “truth” who supports the Taliban.

    I taught it is free world. Wearing niqub can be an insult to some while being nude is okay.

    “I was specific not general even though I take your point.”

    Okay, cool. 🙂

  • Steve

    “Did you see any Paedo Priests from the Vatican too?”

    I don’t know, how would I tell?

    “Also I never said Nuns had to have full face covering”

    But face covering is what is being discussed so why mention nuns?

  • CJONE

    @JT

    I don’t think its offensive. This disgusting behaviour needs to be outed and dealt with.

    Vatican priests tried to cover it up – SHAMEFUL!

    I didn’t say all priests btw – i mentioned Vatican priests. I was specific not general even though I take your point.

  • JT

    CJONE, that’s a bit offensive to priests. They are not all paedophiles, and are generally respectable people. In the same way as it’s wrong for people to generalise with Muslims, so too should you not generalise with Christians.

  • “I have never seen a nun in the street with her face covered apart from her eyes. I was in Rome recently and there were many nuns, none of whom wore a face covering.”

    Depends where you are, I have the book ‘Things in Common’ by Syed Akbar Ali and the cover shows a Filipino nun wearing the full face covering;

    http://syedsoutsidethebox.blogspot.com/2008/10/my-third-book-things-in-common_31.html

    She’s at the top right, its interesting to mention that none of the ‘Muslim’ looking people on the cover are actually Muslims.

    On a side note the book is worth reading anyway, its a Malaysian Muslim view on the similarities between Islam and other relegions. His other book ‘Malaysia & The Club of Doom – The Collapse of the Islamic Countries’ is also a pretty critical look of how ‘Islam’ operates in ‘Islamic’ countries. Oh, and both books are cleap and easily avalible in any Malaysian bookshop despite the contents… more ammo against this ‘banning’ story from last week.

    @Steve

    Also I never said Nuns had to have full face covering.

  • Steve

    “Christianity tells women to cover themselves i.e Nuns”

    I have never seen a nun in the street with her face covered apart from her eyes. I was in Rome recently and there were many nuns, none of whom wore a face covering.

    @rookie

    Why should I be banned?

  • rookie

    Atheist says:
    The niqab ban should be enforced.
    And that group Shariah4Belgium should be outlawed as well.

    and you should be banned!

  • CJONE

    Khalid, the ridiculous thing about these Islamophobes is that most of them are Neocon ”Christians” who dont realise that Christianity tells women to cover themselves i.e Nuns

  • Khalid

    I don’t understand what the “textile” imprisonment here is.

    People have been rioting for their right to cover or expose themselves haven’t they ?

    There is literally nothing that can justify this apart from a puerile fear Muslim women and the “creeping sharia” theories that have been thrown back into these xenophobes faces.

    I will start campaigning to outlow Anglican nuns from wearing their ceremonial black and white modest garment just to see how “typical” of a muzzie I am.

  • JT

    At some point, the Belgian police will have to realise how ridiculous the law is. The police is spending time and resources trying to remove a woman’s veil even when she doesn’t want it removed. It’s definitely a “textile prison” if they are being forced but in this case the woman herself wants to wear it ad for that she has been arrested.

    Also, it’s unfortunate that Anjem Choudary’s poison is spreading overseas as Sharia4Belgium and Sharia4Holland. The groups themselves consist of very few people, but their existence is enough to give the local people a good scare. These wannabe jihadi groups are harmless, in that they’re not actually planning anything, but they are going to provoke more violence like they have done recently.

  • Awesome Atheist

    The niqab ban should be enforced.

    And that group Shariah4Belgium should be outlawed as well.

  • Zakariya Ali Sher

    Okay. Where do I report it, because I’d like some free money please. Of course, I am in the US with no intention of setting foot in Belgium, but I’m not above lying to them and just taking their money. After all, its my word against theirs. Plus I LIKE taking money from stupid people, because whatever I choose to waste it on, it will always be more important than their racist crap.
