The Nuclear Card

France Football to Outlaw Hijab Despite Green Light From FIFA

Posted on 06 July 2012 by Emperor

France says that in the name of equality of the sexes the hijab should be banned. The French obsession with what Muslim women wear and how they interact with society is well known. Even though FIFA has agreed that the hijab doesn’t pose a safety risk, France is doing this to uphold “Republican values,” like infringing on religious freedom:

France football to outlaw hijab despite green light

PARIS — The French Football Federation (FFF) said Friday that it would “not authorise players to wear a veil” while playing for France or in organised competitions, a day after world footballing authorities said the hijab could be worn on the pitch.

“Regarding the participation of female French national team players in international competitions on one hand, and the organisation of national competitions on the other, the French Football Federation reiterates its duty to respect the constitutional and legislative principles of secularism that prevails in our country and features in its statutes,” declared a statement from the FFF.

The FFF’s announcement came after a French MP had urged the government earlier on Friday to ban the Islamic headscarf for women soccer players.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB), custodians of the rules of football, on Thursday overturned its 2007 ban on the Islamic headscarf, a garment it had argued was unsafe and increased the risk of neck injuries.

Critics said the ban promoted inequality at the highest level of the world’s most popular game.

Iran, the Asian Football Confederation and Jordan’s Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein, who is also FIFA vice president, were at the forefront of the fight against the ban.

French lawmaker Gerald Darmanin wrote to Sports Minister Valerie Fourneyron asking that Paris denounce the U-turn “in the name of universal and republican values”.

He also called for a “clear signal to ban headscarves in football fields in our country”, adding that sports “must continue to promote equality of the sexes”.

The wearing of the Islamic veil, limited historically to conservative Gulf monarchies, has gained ground, including in sports, since the 1979 Iranian rvolution and the creation of an Islamic republic.

Use of the veil spread quickly as Islamist movements grew in the wake of last year’s Arab Spring uprisings.

France has outraged many Muslims with a law against full face-covering veils which came into force in April 2011.

    @Gegi

no, I’m talking about hijabi soccer/football players. I’ve never seen one exposing arms and legs.

Yes, I’ve seen hijabis with tight jeans, tight tops, and lipstick but that’s their right and who are we to judge? If they feel that they’re doing something religious and as long as it doesn’t affect us, who cares?! Why are we telling them how to dress or not to dress?!

  • Géji

khushboo, I’ve seen “hijabis” walking around exposing worse than just arms and legs. In the new century definition of ‘hijab’, indeed “it” has become just a piece of cloth- without any meaning whatsoever.

  • khushboo

Tozmi, could you please show me a picture of a pro hijabi with legs and arms exposed cuz I haven’t seen any?

  • Tozmi

I’m not against female footballers wearing the hijab, just quite grasp the concept from a religious point of view. Their hair is covered but legs and arms are exposed? That’s like a bikini clad hijabi? Why can’t the sisters play without the hijab?

  • Wanderer

I propose an experiment. Get the women to wear protective headgear, like Petr Cech of Chelsea does. It can cover their hair, and if there is STILL resistance from FFF, then their evil intentions will be clear for everyone to see. Yes, no? Maybe?

  • khushboo

So what can we do about this? Who do we call or email? Any organized protests going on there? Some good news perhaps?

  • Solid Snake

Wait..sooo is this part of the plan to ‘liberate’ Muslim women and allow them to enjoy all that is Good And Western? I don’t get. No, really I don’t.

  • NurAlia

    john spielman…

Would you be angry is Mariam, the mother of Jesus was discriminated against because she wore a headscarf?

Get the point? Obviously a woman playing football is not going to wear a viel…so, what is your excuse now?

  • john spielman

Dear JD: I agree with you. Any Ugandan politicians that would push the execution of homosexuals etc are wrong. Infact, what they are doing IS EVIL. For Christians, Jesus has the last word. We are to hate the sin, BUT LOVE THE SINNER!

  • truth

@ john it happens in African countries. You there not say it in public that you are a witch, wizard or you practice homosexaul(being a gay or lesbian) because if you do you are done.

The French football federation is a joke. They were in volved along with the manager of the national team in having an illegal racist quota system for junior players and the manager before him confirmed on the BBC that he used astrology to pick the player who would represent France.
No idea and no backbone to stand up to racist MPs.

October 2010, another named Rolling Stone
(unaffiliated with the American Rolling Stone) published a story featuring a list of the nation’s 100 “top” gays and lesbians with their photos and addresses. Next to the list was a yellow strip with the words “hang them”. Julian Pepe, a program coordinator for Sexual Minorities Uganda, said people named in the story are living in fear and attacks have begun prompting many to abandon their jobs while some have relocated. The paper’s editor justified the list to expose gays and lesbians so authorities could arrest them, while Nsaba Buturo dismissed complaints from gay people and sympathisers by stating that protests about the outing is part of a campaign to mobilise support and sympathy from outside the country.

You also said “Despite the old testament verdict, Jesus says we ARE NOT to punish others ourselves because we too are sinners”

    same article took me

The private member’s bill was submitted by Member of Parliament David Bahati on 14 October 2009. Same-sex relationships are currently illegal in Uganda—as they are in many sub-Saharan African countries—punishable by incarceration in prison for up to 14 years. ====> The proposed legislation in Uganda has been noted by several news agencies to be inspired by American evangelical Christians. A special motion to introduce the legislation was passed a month after a two-day conference was held in which three American Christians asserted that homosexuality is a direct threat to the cohesion of African families. Several sources have noted endemic homophobia in Uganda has been exacerbated by the bill and the associated discussions about it. American evangelicals have also been accused of taking advantage of social and economic circumstances in Uganda to export the American culture war to Africa<===

Still same article which took me 3 sec to pull up

American evangelists active in Africa are being criticised for being responsible for inspiring the legislation by inciting hatred with excessive speech by comparing homosexuality to paedophilia and influencing public policy with donations from American religious organisations. Among the critics are The Times,[28] Jeffrey Gettleman in The New York Times,[11] Time,[29] PublicEye.org, The Guardian,[12] a pan-African internet news journal for social justice named Pambazuka News,[30] and an international organisation with a similar objective named Inter Press Service.

But I will not like others blame all of Christianity and Christians or Ugandans for these Ignorant actions…
Still same article took 3 sec pull up Amazing what you can find when you want to find it

Several Christian organisations oppose it, including the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church of Canada, Integrity Uganda, Exodus International, Accepting Evangelicals, Changing Attitude, Courage, Ekklesia, Fulcrum, Inclusive Church and the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement. Exodus International sent a letter to President Museveni stating, "The Christian church … must be permitted to extend the love and compassion of Christ to all. We believe that this legislation would make this mission a difficult if not impossible task to carry out."[60] A group of U.S. Christian leaders have released a statement to Uganda about the bill, one of these leaders being Thomas Patrick Melady, former U.S. Ambassador to Uganda.[61] The Anglican Reverend Canon Gideon Byamugisha said that the Bill "would become state-legislated genocide"

  • http://shaw john spielman

JD: Please show me an article documenting homosexuals being executed by the Ugandan goverment. I can find many news reports naming names of gays, “witches”, apostates, all executed under sharia in Iran and Saudi Arabia. These dictatorships are not doing this because the USA backs them but because of Sharia law. Simply wait for the Mo Bros in Egypt to start a reign of terror against nonmuslims and muslims deemed not spiritual enough, (I hope and pray I am wrong because there are 8 million Copts still in Egypt)!
Despite the old testament verdict, Jesus says we ARE NOT to punish others ourselves because we too are sinners. The old testament laws are supposed to show us how bad we really are. The only time executions were carried out in ancient Israel, that are documented, was when God dwelt directly with His people in the Tent of Meeting, and Moses was able to meet face to face with Him to verify the verdict!

what “Islamic republics”(oxymoron) are doing (ie forcing the collective will of the majority on the minority).

    lol really

1 You mean the Dictators our goverment and other nations backs like Saudi Arabia when it plays into there advantage . You know like the recent air defense system sold to Syria by Russia

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/16/russian-arms-dealer-missile-defence-syria

Which was a FU to America for our Air defence System we are placing close to them and will be used to keep out other nations from interfering in Syria while Bashar al-ASSad kills millions of people who want what … oh yea DEMOCRACY

    2. Since Christian Uganda has “Kill the Gays bill ” because Africans see homosexuality as being both un-African and un-Christian I guess any Ugandan killed in America is ok…..

3.Love the Straqman argument by muslim phobes because government X does _____ then treating muslims *who have nothing to do with government x who wants to stay in power and prob treats powerless muslims same as poor minority * in America like nazi did jews ww2 is ok its just payback.

  • john spielman

The French are only doing, but in milder ways, what “Islamic republics”(oxymoron) are doing (ie forcing the collective will of the majority on the minority). To be honest, one has to admit that the French treat their minorities much better than the Islamic countries do their’s!

  • Yusu

First sports does not promote equality of the sexes it highlights the differences. Also, to make the argument that “Universal values” are strictly secular French values fly’s in the face of the term Universal. I love how promoting equality applies as long as it isn’t religious equality with Muslims.

  • mindy1

They are forcing their beliefs on people in the name of freedom-how very orwellian and ironic of them. :/
