Murphy: Colorado Muslims wonder if theater shooter might have been noticed

By Chuck Murphy, The Denver Post

AURORA — In 2009, Najibullah Zazi sent three e-mails from his Aurora apartment to a suspected terrorist in Pakistan asking about the ingredients necessary to bake something for an upcoming marriage.

Within hours, the Federal Bureau of Investigation was on to him.

Agents monitored his calls. They followed him across the country. They became particularly alarmed when they learned he had purchased large quantities of hydrogen peroxide, a hair dye.

Almost three years later and 15 miles away, James Eagan Holmes was filling his home with armament. He had regular deliveries of ammunition for a military-style AR-15 rifle, two handguns and a shotgun he purchased over the course of 60 days. There were about 6,000 rounds in all, another 300 shotgun shells and a high-capacity drum for the rifle. In all, it amounted to more than 200 pounds of ordnance.

All of it legal. None of it, apparently, noticed by or reported to police. None of it the slightest bit disconcerting to ammunition suppliers, delivery drivers or neighbors.

The contrast between the rapid response and monitoring of Zazi and the lack of citizen interest in Holmes is not lost on some in Colorado’s Islamic community.

“This guy literally arms himself to the teeth by mail order without anyone pointing a finger and saying, ‘What’s going on?’ ” asked Imam Ibrahim Kazerooni, a little incredulous. “If my name is Ibrahim or Mohammed and I order a gun or that much ammunition on the Internet, I think within a few hours of the delivery, the FBI and CIA is at my house.”

Important note: Kazerooni is not suggesting the FBI was wrong to investigate Zazi (nor am I). As it turned out, “marriage” was terrorist-speak for “suicide bombing.” I am glad the people who monitor the inboxes and outboxes of al- Qaeda operatives in Pakistan are aware of such linguistic deceptions.

But Kazerooni, an Iraqi by birth, a former political prisoner of Saddam Hussein and a thoughtful, eloquent representative of Denver’s Muslim community, is advocating for investigational parity — for nosy neighbors and police officers.

He is well aware that much of global terrorism is led by those who have his faith but not his approval. Still, as Friday morning’s theater massacre made plain, terrorists take a lot of forms. One of them, police believe, is the form of a Ph.D. candidate from the University of Colorado Denver.

The fact that neighbors and delivery drivers seem to have failed to notice as Holmes amassed his weapons and ammunition and booby-trapped his apartment, while, for example, New York City police actively loiter in Muslim coffee shops to collect intelligence, is indicative of the greater scrutiny Muslims face in our society in the years since Sept. 11, 2001, Kazerooni said.

“There is the general feeling that exists in the U.S. Muslim community that they are marginalized and treated differently,” Kazerooni said. “The foundation for this is real. There are a number of examples in the country that have led to this cynicism.”

Now, knowing what police say he did, it is easy to view Holmes as a clear threat to himself or others. His once-promising future was suddenly cloudy as he was struggling in school. He shut himself off from much of the world. He began buying guns and ammo in large quantities. He may have dyed his hair a color not found in nature.

Kazerooni is likely right. If Holmes were Iranian-American, or Afghan-American, his purchases, his apparent withdrawal and his plans probably would have been noticed by neighbors, reported and investigated. Not fair. Just true.

But the lack of notice paid to Holmes probably goes beyond ethnicity or religion. He was a doctoral student with limitless potential. LikeUnabomber Ted Kaczynskior Virginia Tech shooterSeung-Hui Cho, he just doesn’t fit our prejudiced societal criteria for suspicion.

And so we ask: Should there be a shared database to flag authorities to large ammunition purchases when someone suddenly ramps up their arsenal? Would that serve as a backstop for a society given to the bias that certain people just aren’t capable of mass violence? Would it even be legal? Would it be effective?

Creation of such a database would only lead to other troubling questions, the biggest of which would be: How many bullets and shells are too many bullets and shells?

For the Batman fans in theaters 8 and 9 Friday morning, the answer is 70.

Nobody claimed that the Aurora shooter has Sudden Jihad Syndrome or is a well-disguised convert?

Hm, at least the loons are getting smarter.

This demonstrates the problem with profiling: the true criminals are not seen until it is too late.

I’d add I was speaking of thirty or forty volume clear. It’s not a hair dye by itself, but an oxidizer that activates dyes and bleaches, and by iitself will boost the bleachiing action of the sun. A favorite method of Florida girls with sandy to light brown hair is to mix one part that to two parts Duke’s mayonnaise and go to the beach.

The similarity of MO between this shooter and Breivik are apparent. He boobytrapped his apartment and set it up with the “bait” of loud noise so that either civilians or police would be enticed into a deadly incident while, during the distraction, he could go and commit mass slaughter elsewhere, and the episode was almost anniversarial to the Breivik one. In method, he appears to be a copycat. His motive we don’t know. That could have been anything from making a statement, to seeking notoriety, to sheer insanity. As for peroxide, I don’t buy it in large quantity, but when mixed with three parts Listerine to one part peroxide, it’s an excellent wound extergent and disinfectant, while if a light silk or wool takes climate stain, you can first spray the stain with white vinegar and then with the peroxide and then hang it in the sun (a little Pepsodent brushed into small spots before helps, too). Mixing baby powder with Clorox and applying it to dark or weathered wood, followed by a spray of said peroxide, is a pretty good wood bleach, too.

@hatethehaterz, it most certainly should have caught someones attention at the Colorado Bureau of Investigations. To get four instant check requests that close together in the pattern he did, should have warranted some scrutiny. The last time I had two purchases within two weeks, I got a phone call as well as the store I was buying from and my purchase was delayed.

@my opinion, There are approximately 200,000,000 firearms owned by 50,000,000 gun owners. I know collectors that own hundreds of firearms and people that own just one. I’m somewhere in between, mainly because the firearms I bought for my sons to hunt with are still in my name and are stored by me. Like any other hobby supply, ammo is usually bought the cheapest way possible which is in large quantities. Gas masks are legal, grenades depends on what kind. Smoke grenades are, tear gas and flash bang for law enforcement, and explosive and incendiary for military only.

Yes – I wrote a blog post from this angle.

The fact that this fellow is a white, upper-class kid makes him even more a danger for “terrorism” for the very reason that he “does not look like a terrorist” to what passes as “security and law enforcement” here in the Western world.

In many respects this TERRORIST is like Breivik!

This also includes the discourse and narratives in the media. If this fellow’s name was Mohammad Holmes – WHY – we’d be hearing about “lone wolf jihad” ,”how did he get radicalized” , “what imam did he speak to” and blah, blah, blah…

And – this attack would have not only been labeled “terrorist” and Mohammad Holmes a “terrorist” – this attack would have been labeled a “Mumbai style shooting.”

The other part of this issue demonstrates that – one year after Breivik’s attacks in Norway – Western security and law enforcement does nothing to actually keep us safe from these types of TERRORISTS. Instead – they’re back to the same ol’ focus on “mooslims” as “terrorists” — and they simple do not keep us safe. “Counter-terrorism” is a joke, its busy-work to harass and profile mainly young Muslim men, their “Leftist allies,” and who knows how much they actually make up “evidence” and exaggerate “terrorist plots” to send innocent young Muslim men to prison?

Don’t expect this “Mumbai style shooting” to be called “terrorism” anytime soon – those labels, like “terrorist” are only for dark-skinned, Muslims with outspoken “anti-Western views.”

Again – not a Muslim, not a terrorist. Only Muslims commit “terrorism.” Only Muslims can commit “Mumbai style shootings.”

Did he dye his hair as Joker from Batman? This guys a nutjob.

  • My opinion is my own

I understand the suspicion with the hydrogen peroxide its used to make bombs although the amount he requested isn’t clear nor are the code words that *some* terrorists use due to monitoring. It would be interesting to find out whether the US granted him asylum or citizenship due to his political persecution as its unlikely a country that has an anti-Muslim bias or bigotry would.
On a slight tangent the Fort Hood shootings, although its pretty obvious their was a religiously inspired I understand it was classified as an incidence of workplace violence not Islamic terrorism.

    @moosern

I had no idea of the average rounds or guns people have or those that hunt or shoot for sport. Are gas masks and grenades illegal in the US?

  • Hatethehaterz

@moosern: I agree that the number of firearms in and of itself is not necessarily a red flag. But IMO the fact that he amassed most/all of them over the span of two months is. Most gun owners I know do have a decent number of firearms, but they collected them over the span of several years, not 60 days. The fact that he amassed his arsenal so quickly should have been viewed with some suspicion, shouldn’t it?

  • moosern

Mindy, 4 guns is not a lot to own, it’s the estimated average number that firearms owners own. And the amount of ammo isn’t that high either, it’s quite low. When I buy ammo and find a good price on it, I buy it by the case. Right now, I probably have around 10,000 rounds of ammo of various calibers (might have less after my son had friends out shooting over the weekend). Also hunters will have several different firearms for different game (yes you can hunt with an AR15 they are very accurate long range weapons) For those of us that shoot as a hobby, having a lot of ammo is not unusual. Having tactical gear and gas grenades is. The truth is that there is no way to prevent massacres. Anyone intent on killing large numbers of people will find a way. This would have been far worse had he decided to use the devices found in his apartment in the theater. I have little doubt had his name been Arabic he would have had a visit from law enforcement.

  • Hatethehaterz

I agree. The fact that he amassed his arsenal within the span of two months should have set off red flags. Only someone planning something bad needs that much ordinance and firepower in such a short amount of time.

  • mindy1

Investigational parity, very appropriate term for this article and discussion. It’s hard to say anything now, hindsight is 20/20, but I agree unless you are a gunshop or a target range owner, why would one person need so many guns and bullets? It’s legal, but a little weird :/ RIP to those who died :(
