We usually don’t comment on all the hate crimes in the USA, but this one was so brutal and vicious that it cannot be passed without sharing.

A despicable hate crime:

A 19-year-old Michigan State University student is recovering at home in Oakland County today after surgery overnight for a broken jaw his family says stems from a brutal hate crime.

Two men at a party early Sunday attacked Zachary Tennen, a journalism sophomore at MSU, after asking whether he was Jewish, his mother, Tina Tennen, said today.

They raised their arms in a Nazi salute, chanting “Heil Hitler” and then knocked Tennen unconscious, she said.

While he was out, the men stapled his mouth, putting a staple into his gum, she said.

Tennen said her son said no one at the party helped him as he was attacked then thrown out of the gathering. He took a cab to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing for initial treatment, but underwent surgery in metro Detroit overnight to have his jaw wired shut, his mother said.

“I’m really, really upset in a few ways,” Zachary Tennen, said, according to the MSU student newspaper the State News. “First of all it is a terrible experience, physically and also mentally to know someone would do something like this,” he said before his surgery, despite the difficulties for him to talk.

“It almost seemed like they tried to kill me, and to think about that in my brain, physically — it isn’t very pleasant.”

The family has filed a report with East Lansing Police.

A young man who answered the door at the house where the reported assault took place would say only that police had instructed him not to talk about the incident.

Tennen has been involved with MSU Hillel, the Jewish student community center in East Lansing. He ate dinner there Saturday night, a reunion of sorts for a group he had traveled with to Israel this past May.

I’m not sure why you keep using the term, “Pakistan firster,” which I assume implies someone who puts the interests of Pakistan above those of their own country. I see no evidence this is true of DrM or khushboo, but even if it were true, so what?

Usually this kind of accusation is leveled against a political opponent or an elected official because it implies he or she won’t properly represent the electorate. In the context of Loonwatch, it really has no significance. It’s certainly not an “offense” that would get someone banned. In other words, harping on “Pakistan firsters” is a dead end.

Also, your initial comment suggested khushboo and DrM are antisemites prone to violence, which is a serious accusation. When confronted, you justified your comment on the grounds they’re “Pakistan firsters.” I’m not following your logic.

Are you implying that anyone who advocates for Pakistan is automatically also an antisemite, and one who is prone to violence no less? That sounds like bigotry to me.

In any case, I repeat: Please stop instigating conflict with other visitors. Comply or your comments will be deleted.

You will not be permitted to continue derailing this thread, which is to highlight the plight of this boy, the victim of a vicious crime, not to provide a venue for you to carry out your personal vendettas.

Khushboo, DrM, Pakistan or India weren’t even part of this conversation until you brought them up. If you have a problem with either of those commentators’ views you should debate them, if you want, but by bringing them up, and even accusing them of being capable of harming someone like those who beat that poor kid, you’re just baiting them, looking for a fight.

Well, I guess it could be a story of a guy who said he was attacked in order to avoid looking stupid for injuring himself with a stapler during a night of excessive drinking.

If the story turns out to be false, then why did he have to make up a hate crime?

I agree. We have quite a few loon commenters who think being a Pakistan firster either under various identities is the purpose of fighting Islamophobia, by promoting hate against other countries and religons seen as being in league with their enemies. Those are the type of loons we don’t want here, nor will they be allowed to latch on to the cause under false pretences.

And please apply your rules uniformly. This is a place for Islamophobia and those interested, or even Islamophboes but it’s not a place for Pakistan firsters to promote their agenda, They can go to other places to excercise their Israel hate. Israel is an ally of India that is why Pakistan firsters including secular ignorants one see it as a threat and why Jew hate is a staple diet in Pakistan and their supporters. It has little to do with Islam, and a lot to do with politics.

We are under no obligation to prop up nationalist causes which are a hot bed of terrorism who may happen to have the Islamophobia cause as a useful idiot ally.

Yes I’m surprised Emperor didn’t use label here. It would certainly be appropriate, and I don’t think it would be insensitive either, since we’d basically be pointing out how the attack would be used to demonize an entire group.

Bigotry is bigotry, hate is hate. The problem with your comment is, that somehow you think that Muslims deserve some special place when they are victims of bigots…and as I see it in the west, that is why Muslims keep being victims.

When MUSLIMS like you stop focusing on crimes when the victim is Muslim, and focus on bigoted acts of violence like this may have been, and join with those likely to be victims of bigots like Jews and minorites…and unfortuantly in America…women, they cant use Muslims as ‘soft targets’, because ALL you associate with will speak up in your defence.

I am seeing people standing with Muslims when they are victims, now it is time for Muslims to stop crying, and join when others, like this young man was a victim, and help him speak out.

What is striking about this crime is…no one helped this man…they all watched. Now, living in THAT kind of society is scary.

Stuff like this happens because there are people like Geller and Spencer that think preaching hatred is okay. The problem is that they have no control over what people will hate. It is people like them that create the climate that it is okay to do this to people who are not like you.

I agree. Peter King doesn’t seem to care at all about the real terrorist threat. Instead he just exaggerates what little threat exactly exists when it comes violent Muslim fanatics. Peter King should be voted out of office.

However, the group we have to be worried about when it comes to terrorism, isn’t so much white people, but the radical right. Being white in and of itself does nothing to lead a person to do something heinous like this. The hearings should be on Neo Nazis and other hate filled far right ideologues, including ironically “counter jihadists”

I am sorry, but I am not sure why LoonWatch is reporting this. The site is about hate crimes against Muslims, not Jews. Now, don’t get me wrong, this is a despicable attack, and I don’t care whether someone is a Jew, a Muslim or an alien, an attack is an attack, but I am just not sure why LoonWatch felt it necessary to point out this attack. I mean, there are many attacks on Jews throughout the year, but you guys haven’t reported those before.

(1) khushboo and DrM each have a long history at Loonwatch.
(2) They are clearly two separate individuals.
(3) There is no evidence either have (or ever have had) any “sock puppets,” aka alternate identities.

East Lansing police: Michigan State student’s beating likely not hate crime

Tennen says, the attackers asked him if he is Jewish. He said yes.

“And they were making Nazi and Hitler symbols and they said they were part of the KKK,” he said.

However, East Lansing police say after a preliminary investigation it appears the attack on Tennen likely is not a hate crime. Police say they have two witnesses and have identified a potential suspect who lives in the area. Their investigation is ongoing.

The 2011 Birmingham Groves High School graduate says he was knocked unconscious. When he woke up, he says, he found a staple in his mouth.
