Gabriela Mercer: GOP Favorite Doesn’t Want “Middle Easterners” in the US Legally or Illegally

Gabriela Saucedo Mercer is a favorite to win the GOP primary in Arizona’s 3rd district. In the height of loony irony, Mercer herself an immigrant to the USA doesn’t want Middle Easterners to enter the country, legally or illegally. (h/t: Jawad)

Many of my latino comrades would be dismayed and embarrassed by Mercer:

Gabriela Saucedo Mercer hasn’t even won the Republican primary for Congress in Arizona yet, but she is already facing attacks from the Democratic Congressman she is hoping to unseat in November over some incendiary comments she made in the past about Middle Eastern immigrants.

In an interview with a conservative website last year, Saucedo Mercer talked in depth about her views on immigration. A Mexican immigrant herself who became a U.S. citizen, she said the issue was important because people from places other than Mexico were among those coming across the border illegally.

“That includes Chinese, Middle Easterners,” she said. “If you know Middle Easterners, a lot of them, they look Mexican or they look, you know, like a lot of people in South America, dark skin, dark hair, brown eyes. And they mix. They mix in.

“And those people, their only goal in life is to, to cause harm to the United States. So why do we want them here, either legally or illegally? When they come across the border, besides the trash that they leave behind, the drug smuggling, the killings, the beheadings. I mean, you are seeing stuff. It’s a war out there.”

Saucedo Mercer was facing fellow Republican Jaime Vasquez in Tuesday’s primary in Arizona’s 3rd congressional district, with the results due later tonight. But her supporters and opponents both clearly expect her to win.

She has been endorsed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R), who is scheduled to attend a fundraiser for Saucedo Mercer on Sept. 12 in Tucson, Ariz. She was also facing attacks from the campaign of Rep. Raul Grijalva, the Democrat she is trying to unseat.

    No… just, no.
Lol, I just watched the vid with a Mexican friend of mine, her jaw dropped out of embarrasment.
These people really need to be silenced, but I guess if it’s against Muslims or Middle Eastern folk, America just don’t care.

In this Congressional District (Dist. 3) of Arizona, compassion and inclusiveness trumps bigotry.

Prediction: Raul Grijalva wins, the Loon loses.

    @Mrislamanswersback,

Excellent question and point. I can only think it has something to do with an inferiority complex or colonized mind. Some are just plain opportunists.

  • Mrislamanswersback

Why do SOME immigrants who run for office on the Republican platform feel they must appeal to the “White bigots” of the republican party in order to get support and elected?

  • Senor

Yet another Republican trying to appeal to her ignorant base. I don’t think she believes any of what she stated.

@Zakariya Ali Sher says, “To my mind, the cartels are no different from al-Qaeda or Ansar Dine.”

It is not just an opinion in your mind. It is a definitive reality that is almost entirely unreported in the media. For example, I would be willing to bet that the La Familia Michoacana (“The Family”) Christian drug cartel (and its offshoots) in Mexico has likely killed and viciously beheaded more individuals in the name of Christianity than the Taliban drug cartels ever did in the name of Islam. And yet we allow those same Christian Mexicans like Gabriela Saucedo Mercer to immigrate to this country by the millions? Based on her logic, every last Mexican, including herself, should be deported as a potential violent terrorist who could behead just about anyone at anytime in the name of Christianity.

Here is a teaser quote from Wikipedia on them, by the way:

“La Familia has been known to be unusually violent. Its members use murder and torture to quash rivals, while building a social base in the Mexican state of Michoacán. It is the fastest-growing cartel in the country’s drug war and is a religious cult-like group that celebrates family values. In one incident in Uruapan in 2006, the cartel members tossed five severed heads onto the dance floor of the Sol y Sombra night club along with a message that read: “The Family doesn’t kill for money. It doesn’t kill women. It doesn’t kill innocent people, only those who deserve to die. Know that this is divine justice.”

I could go on more, by the way, about how the Taliban ceased being a religious group decades ago and is now just a conglomerate of drug cartels using religion as its unifying and justifying imprimatur of moral legitimacy. However, that is an entire essay on its own. The bottom line is that these two regional drug cartels are really no different in how they hijack religion for their own motives of profit and power. The facts are overwhelming. It is by no means just a matter of opinion.

“And those people, their only goal in life is to, to cause harm to the United States.”
Lol, oh, please. Like Middle Easterners have nothing else to do than sit all day plotting on how to take down a country that is 15 trillion dollars in debt, fighting two massive wars, and is trying to elect Mitt Romney for president. I’m sure they have more pressing matters to attend to, like getting held back for 3 hours at the airport, and convincing their co-workers that they don’t know anything about any beheadings at the borders.

  • Zakariya Ali Sher

@ Cyrus: Dude, seriously, I was joking too. The Greco-Persian wars ended over 2,400 years ago, well before the rise of Islam, Christianity, or any modern nation state. Besides which, after Alexander the whole thing was moot anyway.

But seriously, Mercer is a bigot, and I’m amazed that anyone could make such blatantly racist statements and still be a viable candidate for ANY party. That scares me. However, she is also stupid, and I pull no punches in making fun of her stupidity. Like I said before, the Maghreb is in North Africa, not the Middle East. :-D

What’s perhaps more interesting is how Mercer, much like Spencer or Geller, manages to blame all evils on Muslims. Illegal immigrants? That’s our fault. Drug cartels? That’s our fault too! People littering along the US-Mexico border? Yep, we even leave our beloved Qur’ans and janamaz there. Apparently right wingers think we just throw Qur’ans wherever we go. Or maybe its part of our stealth jihad to convert the desert wildlife. I do have to say, seeing a gila monster make namaz would be pretty hilarious. :-D

Just so you know, I share your love for Latin culture (and Latina women, LOL). In fact, this morning I’ve been listening to music by Anna Tijoux, Café Tacvba, Calle 13, Ximena Sariñana, Juanes, ChocQuibTown and the like. However, I understand that Mexico does have serious problems with poverty and crime. The same can be said of much of the South America, Middle East, Africa, Asia, and even Eastern Europe. Even here in the US, in inner cities, we have gangs that prey on black, Latino and even white and Asian communities. Honestly, I find that very sad, and I don’t see any hypocrisy in pointing this out. Mexican culture is beautiful and vibrant. The drug cartels are sick bastards and deserve to be shot down by law enforcement so that people can go back to living their lives, just as I would prefer to see every terrorist in the Middle East taken out. To my mind, the cartels are no different from al-Qaeda or Ansar Dine.

But Mercer tries to draw a link here. In her mind, it seems ALL Muslims are bad people, and therefore only we can do bad acts. No doubt we’ll see this toxic meme spread until we are blamed for everything from pirating mp3s to making the hurricane hit New Orleans.

  • Cyrus

Sheeeshhh…I am Iranian-American. I have Latinos who have married into my family. I was being sarcastic. Suddenly, everyone is bringing up the Greco-Persian Wars…All I car about, is that this hater Mercer is not elected to Congress. That simple.

    ^Politician^

  • Abbey

Holding and maintaining puppets in the Middle East sure helps poloticians in the USA get away with being so blatantly racist and Islamophobic.

    FINALLY! success!

  • Zakariya Ali Sher

@ Cyrus: A rehash of the Greco-Persian Wars? Actually, Greeks are kind of dark skinned too, and their Orthodox Christians, not Protestant, so I suspect the tea baggers aren’t too keen on them either. Plus quite a few Greeks have family roots in Cyprus or Turkey, so I guess they might count as ‘Middle Eastern.’

Either way, I’d be down for letting Shohreh Aghdashloo stay at my place to avoid being deported. <3

Actually, come to think of it did anyone else notice that Mercer only said Middle East. Not North Africa. Not South Asia. Just the "Middle East," which is a very vaguely defined region. I'm guessing that means all the Moroccans, Algerians, Tunisians, Pakistanis and the like get to stay, meanwhile Cypriots, Armenians, Georgians and Israelis get deported. :-D

    Where are HER ancestors from???

  • Christian-friend

That sounds like a rant of an anti-Mexican hillbilly, if you ask me…

  • Cyrus

@Christian-Friend: HAH! The “Persians” would be the first to go! I see how those Tea Party types hungrily lust for those McMansions of our beloved Iranian-American citizens…

    @Mercer

I’m glad we do have a choice. We have a choice not to vote for you!

  • Amro

Wow. I didn’t know you guys had so many beheadings taking place across the pond.

  • Christian-friend

Soooooooo….does that include Israeil too? And Turks and Persians, to?

  • Zakariya Ali Sher

Can we start with Brigitte Gabriel, Walid Shoebat, Robert Spencer, Ergun Caner, Kamal Saleem, Wafa Sultan and Zuhdi Jasser?

  • Pamela

She needs to go back to where she comes from.

REALLY? You literally have to have an IQ of “0” to run for congress?
