New York: Predictably, The So-Called “Islamorealism” Ads are Based in Bigotry and Lies

Posted on 16 August 2012 by Garibaldi

The above ads are appearing at Metro-North stations in New York. A continuation of Islamophobic activists Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller‘s AFDI/SIOA racist and anti-Muslim/Islam advertisement campaign.

In light of recent hate attacks, 8 over a period of 11 days, and another possible attack yesterday, the attempted firebombing of a Muslim family’s home in Panama City, Florida, can we not consider such advertisements to be an incitement to violence?

**************

If these ads are not a form of “false advertisement,” at the very least they are a form of false and inaccurate information that is being disseminated to the general public, making the masses more ignorant.

Factually, the number of “*19,250 Islamic attacks (*and counting)” is a purposeful fabrication. To label such attacks as “Islamic” is not only offensive but a dangerous and ignorant essentialization of Islam and the very broad and variegated phenomenon of terrorism in Muslim majority countries and the West. It tells us nothing about the so-called “terrorist” attacks themselves; what criteria was used to judge them “terrorist” or “Islamic”; nor about who or what created the “terrorism.” It purposefully reinforces the Islamophobic myths that Islam, a religion of over 1.5 billion people worldwide, that is over 1400 years old is a unified, monolithic and totalitarian force that is inherently obligated to wreak random and terrible violence. Also notice the intentional and shameless exploitation of 9/11 in the ad, “…Since 9/11/01.”

What is strangely not mentioned in the advertisements is that this so-called “Islamic Terrorism ticker” that gives us the oddly precise round number of 19,250 is taken from the anti-Muslim website “The Religion of Peace” (TROP). In a previous article I pointed out that the methodology by which TROP arrived at these inflated numbers is very deceptive.

Even a cursory glance at TROP’s list of so-called “Islamic terrorist attacks” reveals it to be nothing more than a deeply biased, propagandistic spin-job that conflates:  real terrorist attacks, (semi)religious/culturally motivated crimes, attacks on military personnel and attacks by secular groups with no ideological basis in Islam — all in theaters of occupation, civil war and separatist conflict.

I cited a sampling of the attacks they claimed were so-called “Islamic terrorism” from a period of just one month that on further inspection proved not to be related to either “terrorism” or “Islam.” Many of the attacks listed by TROP relate to nationalist insurgencies, such as the conflict involving Baluchi nationalists seeking independence from Pakistan. Some of the attacks listed by TROP are in fact crimes committed by Muslims or people with Muslim sounding names that have nothing to do with Islam or terrorism, such as honor killings, the killing of local policemen, petty assault, etc.

In the end I wonder if there are any actionable grounds to contest these advertisements? Even though they are not selling a product they are promoting hate propaganda based on fabricated and faulty information, and hence are doing an immense disservice to the general population.

The Metro-North is once again the center of a controversy over potentially offensive billboards.

Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner is urging Metro-North to put up ads of its own in response to “inflammatory” postings in the Hartsdale station.

The ad in question, sponsored by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, lists the number of deadly Islamic attacks since 9/11″[This needs to be challenged and not just stated as fact--Ed.] and says “It’s not Islamophobia, It’s Islamorealism.”

Feiner says the ad can’t be removed, but is offensive. He wants Metro-North to warn passengers that the ads could be upsetting and don’t represent Metro-North’s views or that of the community.

“There are many Muslims residing in Greenburgh and in our villages,” he said. “They should not be discriminated against. the posters encourage hatred, discrimination and do not help the efforts to fight hate crimes.”

After lots of feedback — positive and negative — from residents concerning the ads, Feiner added that he will recommend the Metro-North donate profits from the ad to education campaigns against discrimination.

“I feel it’s not a violation of free speech for Metro North to put up a competing sign and it’s also not a violation of free speech if they donate the profits to an anti-defamation league or an organization that objects to hate crimes,” he said. “I feel that it should be clear that the people of Metro North and the town do not support this message.”

AFDI executive director Pamela Geller said the ad is not hate speech, but merely a statement of fact.

“There is nothing hateful, mean-spirited, or offensive about opposing jihad terror,” she said in an email. “Are the facts offensive? It is, as the ad says, Islamorealistic. Islamic supremacist imams around the world foment violence, promote hatred, teach children to hate, and exhort Muslims to gain a place in Paradise by murdering infidels.”

The MTA lost a recent federal court case to Geller, who sued after the MTA banned an advertisement, saying it violated standards prohibiting language that demeans an individual or group.

The MTA declined further comment and said its position has not changed on the issue.

Feiner is not the first politician to complain about offensive advertisements on the railroad: The MTA faced a controversy in July over potentially offensive billboards concerning the Israel-Palestine conflict.

So Abdo wasn’t real terrorism it was just a guy who acted on his own. My point is not what is or is not real terrorism my point is you are quick to go on those people like Brevik or Holmes but I don’t see you guys on Abdo, Hassan or any of the islamic terrorism. You don’t consider them terrorism. It isn’t about who was muslim or not. I see plenty Brevik, Holmes, and Nazi shootings here but I don’t see any other terrorism nothing about Nidal Hassan , Jason Abdo, or Hasan Akbar cause you people are so quick to sweep it under the rug and pretend it never happen or say it wasn’t really terrorism.

  • NurAlia

    Josh…

The problem is, REAL terrorism is in the eye of the victim, the one being shot in the cinema, or the college campus, or the workplace, or the government building in Oklahoma, or the church, or a teen aged girl or boy with a weapon pointed at thier faces after seeing the man holding it shoot point blank another kid.

Josh…that is terrorism…but of course, unless the offender’s name isnt Fatima or Muhammad, it isnt to you…right?

  • Nilufer R. Sage

Josh… do you say that the Sikh shootings are not real terrorism? That the massacre in Myanmar is not terrorism? I don’t see anyone here who supports or supported Abdo or Hassan, but plenty of people posting all over spitting upon Islam for those two douches. And spitting on Islam for things unrelated… and then saying “Oh.. he’s just a misunderstood, depressed white guy” when people like Brevik and that jack-a-ma-hole guy in Colorado do the same thing. But I know you’ll have some refutation handy, so take care.

  • Josh

It’s now hateful to say that there has been many attacks by islamic extremism oh sorry I don’t want to sound like a bigot “religious” extremism because putting the word islam in it would make it hateful. Can anyone say anything about the violence of religious extremism with out saying it’s hateful. Seriously where is your “loon watch” when Jason Abdo attempted to blow up restaurant near Fort Hood or Nidal Hassan? You guys are so quick to sweep the real terrorism under the rug but when someone complains or saying these attacks are getting out of hand you are quick to argue. Hypocrites

  • Garibaldi

@Chameleon, I think you are idea and post is a very good one. We have in the past consistently called out Robert Spencer for a debate. A few months ago, after goading and pestering him, we were even in talks with him, though he slimly and sleazily wiggled his way out of debate.

We are ready to debate him anytime, and are just waiting for the opportunity. We may have to increase the pressure on him for such a debate, there are several ways we could go about it.

  • NurAlia

    Chameleon…

You may have a good idea there. I remember once a comedian had thousands flood an EDL twitter page with jokes, and it worked to defuse thier hate message.

I wonder how to get a petition together, and one day flood the hate sites with nice sayings, peaceful messages, pictures of pretty things and places, and people getting along, nice songs about peace…and other things.

Of course, no hate, no threats, and really I would be against ‘defending’ Islam, or preaching religion of any kind.

  • Truth Hurts

So, in a “civilized Christian” nation sectarianism is okay?

  • Chameleon

    HOW DO WE RESPOND?

I believe that the legal meat grinder approach can only backfire. Their funding is in the tens of millions, and ours is basically nil. Moreover, they probably wouldn’t have to spend a dime to recruit and engage at least one pro-bono lawyer from among the “few” Jewish lawyers out there who might be sympathetic to their cause.

Ironically, a better approach may be to do exactly the opposite: to advertise their advertisements even more. I believe we need to give their Orwellian hate even more exposure to all those who need to see it, but this time to frame that exposure through the lens of hate speech and under the powerful light of truth about how real Islamophobia truly is, especially amongst those who deny that it exists. I believe that there is much more of a reason to see these ads as a welcome opportunity rather than an offensive threat if we play our cards right. As I recently posted in the new “Pam & Bob” article, I believe these two buffoons are like vampires walking out onto a hot summer beach without realizing where they are going with this strategy. It will be their ultimate undoing if they continue.

THE “MOTHER OF ALL DEBATES” IDEA

To kick start this heightened exposure of their advertised hate to the withering light of public scrutiny, I would love to see a much more public LoonWatch challenge to JihadWatch to debate online— for the record, and for all to see. The possibilities are endless, but I personally imagine something like the following, which could be slapped onto a partial replica of their ad: “Why do those who hate so much refuse to debate the Islamophobia that they advertise as ‘Islamorealism’, for X years Y days, and counting? Because those who hate and deny the truth will always be afraid of it.”

As I said in another post that no one seems to have read, there is nothing like a sustained public shaming against Islamophobia, not just to expose the truth about a hate machine’s bloviating hatred proudly on public display, but to force the otherwise reluctant bigot in charge of that hate machine into a debate that he truly fears.

I particularly love the idea of a “website to hatesite” challenge (i.e., LoonWatch vs. JihadWatch/Atlas Shrugs/TROP/BNI/PoliticalIslam/etc./etc. — bring them ALL!) to egg on the oversized egos of the cocky crowds behind the hatesite owners/editors. Their egos are oversized quite simply because they have been brainwashed to believe that their hate-filled arguments against Islam and Muslims are irrefutably true. This irrational hate is their fatal flaw and weakness, which we can exploit. Their loyalty to their hatesite’s bigoted brand would not allow them to take sustained, unanswered debate challenges to their egos, thereby co-opting the hatesite’s mob mentality to our advantage to convince the hatesite owners to agree to a public online debate. In effect, it would still be a Danios vs. Spencer (or whoever) debate, but with the additional backup of a larger team. Of course, we would need limits on the number of designated posters/site and an independent moderated host site enforcing agreed upon debating rules, among other details that I believe are not insurmountable. I would be interested to know what others think of my suggested approach here.

    @khushboo

The only problem is that you have to find something that you can sue them on. Too many frivolous lawsuit and it will get harder and harder for us to bring them to court. Maybe you could talk to Morris Dees over at the Southern Poverty Law Center. His organization was able to sue at least one or two hate groups out of business.

I think we need to drain their funding! The more lawsuits, the better. By mentioning “Islam” instead of “terrorists” they are insulting all of us Muslims and therefore, responsible for any discrimination against us. They have caused alot of physical and emotional trauma in our country. Anyone affected by discrimination whether verbal or physical including Sikhs should sue!

    INVESTIGATE GELLER

  • Garibaldi

    @MIT_MD/PhD

Why respond to bigots with more bigotry? Usually your comments are spot on, but using words such as “parasites” and “cancer” is wrong and dehumanizing. This is not the way to respond to such hate as it would be descending to their level.

  • MIT_MD/PhD

We should put this banner on buses:

AIPAC = Aggressive Israeli Parasites, America’s Cancer.

Let’s see how Gellar and other thugs would like it?

  • NurAlia

The right way to handle this is to sue Geller personally, and sue the funders and the ‘organizations’ that promote the ads.

Sue Geller and the lot for slander, to make them prove in a public forum that what they post on the ads is ‘Islamic’ in nature.

  • http://thepenofawanderingstranger.com/personal Jack Cope

Josh, which ‘truth’ would that be? The number has already been debunked many a time. As for freedom of speech… yeah, it’s great, but this is just slander.

  • Josh

I guess truth is the new hate speech? I guess you guys hate freedom of speech as well.

  • truth

I alwalys think of something and I hope I will be able to figure it out. Why is pam is do full of hatred towards the muslims?

  • Géji

@CentristAmericanMuslim says, “If she can’t back up her “19,250″ figures then it is libel”

Don’t hold your breathe, this isn’t the first time she (and some other genocide-seeking of yet another western minority – round two, in less than 80 years – but this time of anti-Muslim flavor) used this bizarrely “specific” figures. Just like she did used in one of her feverish rants, another bizarrely specific figures of an hugely comical quality of 250 million (and that is of human, not dollar) that apparently we Muslims wasted, lol. She never could backed them up the first time, nor will she now. By why the random choice of those two “specific” numbers? go figure out. All we know is that those 2 bizarre numbers are thrown by some anti-Muslim Islamophobes, without ever even knowing how on earth they came about such precise figures, let alone backing them up.

  • mindy1

All this money for hate-why no money for peace???

  • khushboo

I don’t understand why victims of discrimination can’t sue them for all the fear/hatemongering that caused violence against them. This ad will cause even more violence! I can’t believe this hate speech was allowed! DISGUSTING!

  • Susie

MTA should donate the profits to CAIR. That would be hilarious.

  • http://www.loonwatch.com Garibaldi

@Centrist, there’s no way she can back up these figures.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/GargamelGold?feature=mhee CriticalDragon1177

    @CentristAmericanMuslim

She’ll probably claim that she can back them up, off course she won’t be able to link to a single objective source. Instead most of her sources will be anti Muslim “counter Jihad” websites and news articles that she has distorted to make it sound like there was a terrorist attack motivated by Islam.

  • CentristAmericanMuslim

If she can’t back up her “19,250″ figures then it is libel IMHO.
