The Nuclear Card

Top Israeli Rabbi Urges Prayers for the Destruction of Iran

Posted on 27 August 2012 by Emperor

Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef

MEMRI and other anti-Muslim Islamophobic groups and websites routinely play sermons from Imam’s or Ayatollah’s praying to God for the destruction and or decimation of “enemies.” They use such clips of prayers as a stockpile of ammunition to bash Muslims and Islam, the message is: Islam is an inherently and uniquely violent faith, Islam’s God is different from the Judeo-Christian God of love and mercy, etc.

It’s all part of well-worn anti-Muslim propaganda, that is why they will not cover the many instances when top religious leaders from their own faith traditions call for the destruction and decimation of other nations. Take for instance the former Israeli Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, a leading ultra-Orthodox Rabbi and Shas party leader who recently counseled the Jewish faithful to pray for the destruction of Iran,

“[When] we ask God to ‘bring an end to our enemies’, we should be thinking about Iran, those evil ones who threaten Israel. May the Lord destroy them,”

Rabbi Yosef issued his call in a sermon on Saturday in which he said Iran should be included in a traditional Jewish New Year blessing next month in which God is asked to strike down Israel’s enemies.

Such pronouncements do not reflect the true core teachings of Judaism and are flavored by political realities on the ground. Such political exploitation of theology and rituals can effect any religious tradition. What we must come to grips with however is that those who try to bash Islam stand accused of not noticing the “mote in their own eye.”

What if he were Muslim?

An influential Israeli Rabbi has called for prayers for Iran’s destruction, a week after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to court his support for a possible attack on a nuclear programme Israel sees as an existential threat.

The sermon by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef added to a flurry of recent rhetoric from Israeli officials that has raised international concern that Israel, widely believed to be the Middle East’s only atomic power, might attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. “[When] we ask God to ‘bring an end to our enemies’, we should be thinking about Iran, those evil ones who threaten Israel. May the Lord destroy them,” Yosef was quoted as saying by Israeli media yesterday.

Last week, Mr Netanyahu sent his national security adviser to brief the 91-year-old Rabbi on Iran’s nuclear activities in what was widely seen as an effort to win his backing for any future military strike, possibly before the US presidential vote in November.

The Rabbi is the spiritual leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, a key member of Mr Netanyahu’s governing coalition. Mr Netanyahu is frustrated that Western diplomacy to try to force Iran to rein in its programme has been fruitless. He said that Iran, whose leaders have threatened Israel’s destruction, had made “accelerated progress towards achieving nuclear weapons”.

Rabbi Yosef issued his call in a sermon on Saturday in which he said Iran should be included in a traditional Jewish New Year blessing next month in which God is asked to strike down Israel’s enemies.

Happy to – I’m afraid I will sometimes zone out, or not have time to deal with, comments which may be offensive on Harry’s Place. My personal email is the one I leave so I assume you can see it.

    @Sarah Brown

This is off topic, but I want to mention something about Harry’s Place, where you’re a contributor. I’ve been reading some of the articles you post with interest, especially since they seem to draw some visitors whose comments are often, I would say, brash and myopic.

I find this especially odd because the tag line is, “Liberty, if it means anyting, is the right to tell people what they don’t want to hear.” That sounds open minded, and there is much talk of “tolerance” at times– which is almost surreal in light of the overall flavor of the comments there. It reminds me of that famous quote from Kabir: “I laugh when I hear that the fish in the water is thirsty.”

Here’s an example of what I mean:

“It was not without good reason that murdered film maker Theo Van Gogh and Ayaan Hirsi Ali called the doc exploring the treatment of women under Islam, “Submission”. Adherents must submit, with women being relegated to subservance to men as well as the diety and the diety’s prophet.”

What a complete misunderstanding of the concept of submission, which is not even unique to Islam! I see this as a trend there, as if many of the visitors suffer from psychological cataracts, to borrow a phrase from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and this is just one example among many.

I’ve thought of joining the discussion just to challenge them with a different view, but I would have to be in the mood to be pounced on–I picture myself a lamb among wolves in that context.

Anyway, obviously, this is off topic for this article and probably for Loonwatch all together, since any further discussion would delve into topics that probably are beyond our scope. So I’d like to invite you, if you’re interested, to have a discussion offline. Don’t feel obliged in the least, but if you’d like, send an email to LW and we can send back my private LW email address.

I think there are better reasons for turning against Wilders. (Not that I am in favour of such a ban.)
