Anti-Islam, pro-Bachmann ad kind of backfires

Michele Bachmann has been on a rather intense anti-Islam tear recently, fearmongering about Muslim Brotherhood infiltration of the government. Recently, she’s touted the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya as proof of her conspiracy theories.

One group of Bachmann supporters, the National Republican Trust PAC, responded in stride, running an ad that attacks Bachmann opponent Jim Graves for calling her comments “outrageous.” The ad ties Graves’ comments to footage from the Middle East during the attack.

The NRTPAC got a little bit of attention in 2010 for running an ad that parroted pretty much every conservative talking point about Obama ever, tying him to everyone from ACORN to the New Black Panther Party.

This time around, though, Jim Graves got a little help. The Daily Kos selected the ad for a weekly feature that asks readers to help raise money for the targets of conservative attack ads, and wound up pulling in close to $8,000.

Here’s the ad in question:

chyanne youre right Sharia is not what this country was founded on. this country was founded on murder, theft and genocide, an alien religion forced on the Native peoples so you are right Sharia is not like that

  • Christian-friend

@Cheyenne, fine, Islam shall not influence the law of America. However, neither should Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, or Hinduism shall influence it, for this is a secular country.

“Bachman has her finger on the pulse of reality.” …… says it all really .

Would you care to tell us when Sharia law was ever used in the USA?
Its all a scam to distract you from looking at the economy, healthcare housing and unemployment . You know real stuff affecting the majority of people .

To the posties who don’t like what I have to say:
I am not quite so much offended as I am disgusted. Perhaps this wasn’t the most appropriate article to present the issues our country is facing. Yet, Bachman has her finger on the pulse of reality. The reality is that the western way of life is hated by…well, I shan’t say the word, Lord knows you’ll label me as “kool aid drinking, islam-hating, green baiting, panties in a knot…”

I do not argue whether this is your country, too. My grave concern is the insinuation of radical ideas, like making it a crime to blaspheme Allah…is that right? Should that be a law? Do you think we should apply sharia in our American Courts? These are the questions that deserve mature discussion, and I truly hope that most Muslim Americans do not want to see this in our country. It’s completely antithetical to the roots of America.

But, I don’t know where most people stand on this issue. You can bet that if sharia keeps getting thrust upon Americans it won’t be long before everyone will be drawing lines in the sand. This concerns me greatly. I think we, as Americans, prefer to live in peace with their fellow citizens. Sharia is not a peaceful system of law, and does not represent what this country was founded upon.

  • Zakariya Ali Sher

Yes, yes, yes. We all know you are ‘offended,’ and have your panties in a knot. You self-righteous types always do. But what your comment seems to ignore is that some of us ARE American Muslims. Some of us have been overseas too. Egypt is actually quite nice. But we know what Islam teaches, and it isn’t the ‘destruction of America’ and ‘your people’ (read, white Protestants). The fact is, this my country too, and I’m not one for segregation or identity politics. I’ve got freedom of speech, and freedom to practice my religion. You want to be offended by that? Great, go tell someone who cares.

As for Michele Bachmann, well, she’s a moron. She’ll claim that ANYTHING is part of some shariah-compliant conspiracy, possibly aimed at her specifically. Its blue collar populism at its best. Just point at the scary foreigner and you’ve got a gullible audience that will eat out of your hand. Personally I prefer my politicians with a little more creativity than that, and evidently so does the GOP, because they sure passed over her short-lived bid for the candidacy now didn’t they?

  • wjshelton

Cheyenne, I am seriously puzzled by your post. What inciting language and comments are you talking about? There are none here. Blasphemy against your religion? Where? There are none. Hatred of America? What article(s) did you read? Certainly not this one. The only insults I see on here are you comments about Islam. Get over yourself lady. You’ve been drinking WAY too much Kool Aid.

  • cheyenne

Sad to see the hateful and inciting comments, or ‘rhetoric’, aimed at those who are protecting our country from an ideology geared toward our country’s complete destruction. Perhaps, when you all are living under sharia law you’ll look back on this time and things will become clear. If you don’t like America just move….is Egypt looking good to you? I have never seen such inciting language and as a Christian I am deeply offended at the articles and the comments. You have insulted my people, my religion, my country, my way of life. And…I speak for many. We, as Christians, are preparing our own legal case against such blasphemies and hatred in America. We, too, are watching what passes for free speech against our God, and America….

  • Zakariya Ali Sher

Well, you’ll notice I put things in quotes. Like I said, the extent of their understanding of ‘western culture’ applies only to the fact that it is presumed by them to be ‘white’ and ‘sort of Christian.’ They intentionally ignore things like pluralism, freedom of speech, religious tolerance, social justice, equality, multiculturalism and all the other so-called ‘liberal’ stuff that they don’t like. Heck, you’ll notice that there’s a strong hatred for the Enlightenment that runs rampant through evangelicals in the US.

As for ‘cultural Christians,’ its a term that I first saw thrown out by Anders Breivik, but it has since popped up in other places. Most of them are people who are in agreement with Breivik, or at the very least anti-Muslim and anti-multiculturalism. It seems to refer to an atheist ideology which sees being Christian and celebrating Christian holidays as an inextricable part of western culture. Probably mostly so they can bitch and moan about Muslim immigration and conversion. Oddly even Dawkins describes himself as a ‘cultural Christian’ (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/7136682.stm).

I have not figured out what “cultural Christians” are..?
“Cultural Christianity” according to Terry Jones?

    @ Zakariya Ali Sher
    Defending the West?
    Really?!
These people could not tell you what “Western values” really are …If they think that banning Islam is a “Western value” – they are really lost! It seems that in Europe Europeans have NO idea what it’s like to live in free societies, with the idea of religious liberty (except in the Netherlands, where they have discussed “religious co-existence” since about 1572). Western identity is supposed to be about religious liberty and tolerance – and so are American values. Religious tolerance and co-existence have been Dutch values for quite a bit longer than in America.

A European sees women walking down the street wearing headscarves and become offended: “Oh – it’s Islamification!”

Nope – silly – we live in a free country where people have the right to chose for themselves!

Well – it appears to me that bigoted “speech” is more tolerated in Europe — especially when a flock of Loons can get together, for a “political party” – get on the ballot – and frighten people with crackpot myths like “Islamification.” You cannot, proud to say, do that in America, even as people like Michele Bachmann try.

Also – let me shamelessly plug this petition that calls on the White House and strong American leadership to speak out against Islamophobia and ant-Muslim hate speech: http://wh.gov/BK7S

  • Zakariya Ali Sher

    @ eslaporte:

Actually, its all rather amusing. The right wing in this country has a very… odd relationship with Europe. On the one hand, they tend to dismiss Europeans as being ‘weak,’ ‘liberal,’ and generally ‘un-manly.’ At the same time, they have an odd fetishisation of European culture and history, emphasizing the idea of ‘Western’ identity. Of course, this only goes so deep. They like the IDEA of Europe, and the symbolism of being ‘white’ and Christian, especially when contrasted to the ‘brown,’ ‘Eastern’ and generally non-Christian ‘other,’ but they don’t like the policies, institutions and culture of modern Europe.

We see this constantly with the various Islamophobic networks, which throw about terms like ‘cultural Christians’ and ‘defending the West.’ Never mind that only a small minority of Europeans and Americans actually buy into that crap. It seems to be more common on this side of the Atlantic, unfortunately, but that might simply be because its better organized and funded over here. More to the point, since 9-11 it has become politically expedient to embrace this vile ideology.

  • http://www.yellow-stars.com eslaporte

Bachmann reminds me of the lady at the Iowa rally for presidential candidate John McCain who “did not trust Obama because he’s an Arab.” We all get a few laughs from that ;-]

But – the method to this madness is that this is promotion of “Clash” ideology, as this ilk wants a Cold War with Islam. It’s just that “Clash” ideology has its fanatics (secret and open) in the Republican Party, those that rag about “weak-socialist Europe,” rag about “European welfare state,” rag about “letting in too many Muslim immigrants.” This ilk in over in the Netehrlands, destroying the entire country’s history, heritage and culture built for 450 years.

The reality is that it’s Michele Bachmann who is the real un-American. It’s un-American to demonize a religion and to drag other Americans through the mud of baseless accusations. But – to “clash” fanatics, Islam is the new Soviet communism and Muslims are the new Soviet Communists.

The truth is that Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate are quite un-American and contrary to American values! There is NOTHING pro-American about Michele Bachmann.

@Criticaldragon-someone from the opposing party paid her, so they could paint all conservatives with the loon brush-I am just kidding (maybe) ;) :P

  • http://twitter.com/Raza_inc Razainc

@ CriticalDragon1177 I what mindy1 was trying to imply was to act that paranoid where you make ur self look that bad if it wasn’t to help ur opponents then it serves no purpose other than to make ur self look bad though she said with a sarcastic humor I think

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/GargamelGold CriticalDragon1177

    @mindy1

Why would she want her opponents to look good?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/GargamelGold CriticalDragon1177

    @Amago

I’m glad it backfired on her like this. Hopefully it will end up costing her the election, and she won’t be able to stay in office another term.

  • mindy1

I swear she’s acting paranoid on purpose to make her opponents look good.

Bachmann is a First Class Loon just like West. You know that she wants to tour the US next year with Geert Wilders?

I think President Obama (that secret Muslim communist who was born in Kenya) hit it out of the park today at the UN: http://tinyurl.com/9pn852t
