Police: Anti-Muslim bigot beat Sikh cab driver

By LEVI PULKKINEN, SEATTLEPI.COM STAFF

A Federal Way man accused of viciously beating a Sikh cab driver while shouting anti-Muslim slurs now faces a hate crime charge.

King County prosecutors contend Jamie W. Larson attacked the cab driver during an Oct. 17 ride after commenting on the man’s turban.  According to charging documents, Larson, 48, tore out chunks of the man’s beard during the assault, which also loosened one of the driver’s teeth.

“Two witnesses saw the attack which was described as savage, and the defendant continued his tirade after officers arrived,” Deputy Prosecutor Gretchen Holmgren told the court, noting that the cab driver was taken to a hospital following the 4:30 p.m. attack.

The afternoon attack came after Auburn police called a cab to pick up Larson, who was apparently too intoxicated to drive or walk.

According to charging documents, the STITA Taxi driver arrived at the Auburn police station to retrieve Larson. During the drive to Larson’s Federal Way home, Larson began questioning the driver about his turban.

Larson then attacked the driver while making anti-Muslim comments, a Federal Way detective told the court. The driver was able to stop the car in the 1200 block of Southwest 301st Street, where police found him injured and Larson attempting to return to the parked taxi.

During the attack, Larson pulled out parts of the driver’s beard and punched him repeatedly, according to charging documents. Police report the attack left the driver dazed and with a loose tooth.

Even after police arrived, Larson continued making bigoted comments about the driver, an immigrant from India. According to police, Larson referred to him derisively as Iranian and Iraqi, and used several anti-Arab slurs before also using an anti-gay slur.

“We have Americans fighting overseas in his country and why doesn’t he go back to there?” Larson allegedly asked officers at the scene.

Writing the court, the Federal Way detective noted Larson’s comments were not only hateful but based on his misperception of the driver’s heritage.

“Officers noted that (the driver), a follower of the Sikhism religion, wore a turban headdress, kirpana, kara and a Kanga; items that symbolize (his) religion,” the detective told the court.

Larson was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with malicious harassment under Washington’s hate crime statute. He remains jailed on $60,000 bail.

    @Senor,

    Do you think it is fair that the word Muslim has become a byword for ‘terrorist’ of late? Do you think it is fair that some people hold all Muslims responsible because of the actions of a few dangerous fools?
    If yes, your being silly. If no, then do not do it to others. I know a great many Sikhs, most have treated with the the utmost respect and courtesy as I have to them, some have not. Is it so hard to believe that not every co-religionist is the same?

  • Garibaldi

    @Senor,

    Your logic is skewed, you draw conclusions based off your experience in college with some Sikhs and you also bring up partition violence, of course it is your prerogative to generalize all Sikhs from this but it is the very same thing that some Islamophobes do, based on their “bad experiences” with Muslims.

    Think about how our Sikh guest contributor named Jai, who regularly debunks Islamophobia and fights racism would feel seeing your comment? I ask you to reconsider your stance, and also want to point out, as Ilisha did that we will not give prejudice or bigoted generalizations free reign here.

    It’s ironic (given how Sikhs in their early history were brutally persecuted by Muslims) that today Sikhs are killed by bigots who mistake them for Muslims!

    Incidentally, it’s also kind of ironic (given the aforementioned persecution) that Sikhs use the same word as Muslims (shaheed) to describe their martyrs.

  • Ilisha

    @Senor

    Saying you’re not shedding tears over this may not be the same as expressly condoning it, but I think it’s reasonable to interpret such statements as tacit approval. If you don’t feel sympathy for the victim, this implies he deserved it simply because he’s a Sikh. Petty shades of difference, though I’m glad you’ve said you believe the perpetrator should be punished.

    I’m not asking you to leave, and I haven’t asked the admin to ban you. I’m telling you LW is not the proper venue for bigotry, and you won’t be given unlimited latitude.

  • Senor

    @llsha: People can be two-faced. If they knew you were a Muslim, then obviously, they are not going to say certain things in front of you.

    The key is if what would they say if they did not know you are Muslim?

    Also, stop making false arguments. I do not condone any violence against anyone. How I react to it is another thing. That is what this site is. It is a place to express your views and debate. Personally, I hope that Larsen guy spends a lot of time in jail for what he did. I know his attack that night could have been against one of my Muslim brothers or sisters.

    It is his right to not like Muslims as much as it is my right not to like Sikhs. He does not have the right to be violent against anyone he does not like. That is where the idiot crossed the line.

    Also, just because you disagree with somebody does not mean they should go elsewhere. One of the things I like about Loonwatch is that there is honest debate here. I don’t agree with everything I read, but I have never told anyone to leave. Grow up.

    My experiance of german girls is quite good and no I will not explain why but I would be stupid to think the other 30,000,000 will behave the same way towards me in future as much as I may wish it .

    You need to be rational about people being people not stereotypes

    Sir David

  • Ilisha

    @Senor

    Your opinion may be based on your experience, but it isn’t based on reason. Anytime you’ve singled out an entire group in this way, it’s bigotry. There are all kinds of Sikhs, just as there are all kinds of Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Christians, and so on.

    Also, my experience is completly different. I’ve known many Sikhs and still count them among friends and coworkers. My experience has been overwhelmingly positive, but it still wouldn’t make sense for me to declare that all Sikhs are good, based on my positive experience. Sikhs are people too, just like any other people. I really find it sad and disturbing that anyone would condone this vicious attack on an innocent person.

    In any case, this is an anti-bigotry site. If you must cling to such hatred, please keep it to yourself or express it elsewhere.

    “Also, please research what the word prejudice means: Preconceived opinion not based on reason or experience.”

    Actually, prejudice contains a few definitions, including “unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding a racial, religious, or national group.” http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/prejudice?s=t. I’ll try to skip one round of debate by saying that we will probably disagree on whether your feelings, opinions, or attitudes are unreasonable based on your experience. I don’t find your reasoning appropriate, though I would imagine that you disagree.

    And I don’t hate you either. I just don’t agree with you.

  • Senor

    All I am saying is that I am not shedding any tears over this. You need to research the history of the Partition of India and see why.

    Also, please research what the word prejudice means:

    Preconceived opinion not based on reason or experience.

    I have had experiences with Sikhs and my opinion of them is based on reasoning. I don’t just dislike people for the sake of hatred. If you don’t agree with me, that is fine. I don’t hate you because of that. LOL

  • Xithurel

    -_-* Do these people just wake up in the morning and decide ‘hmmm I’m gonna go find me a muslim looking person’ and just wander aimlessly all day trying to do that? What an utterly pointless existence this man must lead.

  • Just Stopping By

    “Some? Try many. Also, when “some” talks about killing people like you, it makes them quite easy to “hate.””

    I stand corrected. What’s the word for “hating” a cab driver who was beaten up simply because he is of the same religion as many who talked about killing people like you?

  • Senor

    “Ahh, the idea that if you have bad experiences with some members of a religion”

    Some? Try many. Also, when “some” talks about killing people like you, it makes them quite easy to “hate.”

  • Jaynotes

    @hack

    Is it ever without stupidity? or ignorance for that matter?

    I hope this opens some people’s eyes about how ridiculous islamophobia is getting.

    Peace!

  • Just Stopping By

    “We are all shaped by our life experiences. Pardon me if I don’t feel too much sympathy for this cabbie. Isn’t it ironic what they are going through. Karma.”

    Ahh, the idea that if you have bad experiences with some members of a religion, you are somehow allowed to show disdain for any member of that religion, even ones that you have no reason to believe are anything other than innocent victims of a hate crime. I wonder if there is a name for that.

  • Senor

    Sikhs have really gotten the bad end of the stick post 9/11. I used to live in NY and met many Sikhs in college while I was a student there at Stony Brook. Many of those Sikhs were very prejudiced against Muslims. Some Sikhs, while I was hanging out with my Hindu friends, talked about how they hated Muslims and wanted to kill them. No. I am not making that up.

    We are all shaped by our life experiences. Pardon me if I don’t feel too much sympathy for this cabbie. Isn’t it ironic what they are going through. Karma.

  • hack

    I bet the guy can’t name the only ACTUAL Muslim in the US House of Representatives. Bigotry is bad enough. It’s even worse when it’s combined with stupidity.

  • MC

    Wow, this is disturbing. I live in Seattle and I believe Washington to be one of the most diverse and accepting places to be. This is just horrible.

  • mindy1

    May he rot >:(

    We must do more to stop these terroristic attacks from taking place in America.
