When Did Islamophobic Attacks Become the Norm for the French Media?

When did Islamophobic attacks become the norm for the French media?

When last week’s cover of normally stern French magazine Le Point appeared online, the consensus on social networks said it was a hoax. Le Point is no tabloid. It is a serious and well respected conservative magazine.

Running the headline: “Brazen Islam…in school cafeterias, hospitals, and swimming pools” the cover featured a niqab-clad woman arguing with a French policewoman. It had to be a joke, but sadly it wasn’t.

Le Point‘s cover was widely condemned on social networks, and parodies of it quickly appeared. “Brazen Judaism and its garlic humus”, “Brazen gays and their trimmed eyebrows,” “The brazenly disabled and their parking spaces,” illustrated how French Muslims probably felt when they passed the newsagent last week.

When Socialist Interior Minister Manuel Valls was asked during a popular TV talk-show whether he found the cover shocking, he brushed it off, saying “It expresses a reality.” He went on to say: “What I find shocking, and what I will always find shocking, is a fully-veiled woman.”

That was it. The second religion in France gets insulted on the front cover of one of the country’s most popular magazines – something that could never have happened with any other religion or community, as pointed out by the numerous parodies – and the Interior Minister, supposedly in charge of security of all French citizens, claims on a widely-watched TV show that it’s fine, and no one contradicts him.

It doesn’t matter that at the time of its public ban in 2011, the niqab was estimated to be worn by less than 2,000 out of 65 million French people. It doesn’t matter that – as was later revealed – the infamous picture was taken during a protest in September involving no more than ten women. To Manuel Valls, to Le Point, the terror of ten women protesting is “a reality” that deserves to be on the front page of a national magazine.

This might be because stigmatising Islam has become extremely common in France.

Anti-Semitism is a crime; homophobia is a crime; what about criminalizing anti-Islam?

“It expresses a reality.” He went on to say: “What I find shocking, and what I will always find shocking, is a fully-veiled woman.” Of course he should say so; he is a man and, like every adult man, he loves seeing naked women who only activate the part of his brain that deals with objects. So he actually likes seeing inanimate objects to satisfy himself, and hates and find shocking that they are dressed so modestly that he can’t even see their faces.

Double standard and hypocrisy reign these days, with Zionists and Palestinians in the Occupied Territories and endless settlements, with fully-veiled and fully-naked women in France, and with Muslim and non-Muslim terrorists worldwide (although you never see any non-Muslim bomber accused of terrorism).

    An advice:

If you ban full veiling in the streets, then you will also have to ban full nudity on beaches and TV, and in pornography. Only both could work in a “liberal” society.

Peace be upon you, along with Allāh’s (God) mercy and blessings.

    @Perpetually Confused.

I’m afraid I can’t bring sense to someone who is perpetually confused.
Let me ask you as to why you are perpetually confused?

  • Michael Elwood

    @Perpetually Confused

“The person you describe as fascist lives in France where there is no “supreme leader who exercises a dictatorship over the party, the government and other state institutions”. I don’t really like saying it but that sounds like Mohammed.”

I think you’re still confused, Perpetually. Muhammad didn’t have dictatorial powers. The Quran says:

9:61 Some of them hurt the prophet by saying, “He is all ears!” Say, “It is better for you that he listens to you. He believes in GOD, and trusts the believers. He is a mercy for those among you who believe.” Those who hurt GOD’s messenger have incurred a painful retribution.

3:159 It was mercy from GOD that you became compassionate towards them. Had you been harsh and mean-hearted, they would have abandoned you. Therefore, you shall pardon them and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them. Once you make a decision, carry out your plan, and trust in GOD. GOD loves those who trust in Him.

42:38 They respond to their Lord by observing the Contact Prayers (Salat). Their affairs are decided after due consultation among themselves, and from our provisions to them they give (to charity).

Sun is really most unoriginal. As for when this stuff got started in France, I remember, in the late Fifties, on our incredibly grainy black-and-white TV, seeing mobs of traffic driving the streets, honking their horns in time to their shouts of “Algèrie francaise”, and I think it was old then.

Oh dear “Le Point” has been in a big huff since its great Hero Sarko got stuffed in the recent election and it seems to be cozying up to Front National . So this drivel comes as no surprise to me .
As for the politian , typical as religion is a taboo subject in france .

“What I find shocking, and what I will always find shocking, is a fully-veiled woman.”

And fully naked women? That’s more like it? As long as they’re not belly-dancing, covering their faces is a problem.

    Shocking indeed.

  • Sarah Brown

Seems quite extraordinary. I don’t know what the problems are with regard to hospitals etc – it might be that what is being raised are legitimate topics for concern or debate (I’ve no idea) but to present them in this way is tendentious and inflammatory. This reminded me of a piece I came across recently – via Twitter I think.

The headline was worrying – and yet it did not seem earned by the full text below – yet how many people read headlines but not the full text?

  • George Carty

Sorry that should have been more accessible target…

  • George Carty

The Crusades led to an orgy of anti-Semitic pogroms in Europe because local Jews were a more acceptable target than the far-away Muslims. Similarly Muslims in Europe (and Hispanics in America) today are easier targets than the people who are truly stealing European and American jobs — Chinese people living in China.

“I don’t really like saying it, but I’ll say what I think: You’re a fascist.”

The person you describe as fascist lives in France where there is no “supreme leader who exercises a dictatorship over the party, the government and other state institutions”. I don’t really like saying it but that sounds like Mohammed.

@Sun, just like the EDL were waking up? Just like Geller’s zombies are waking up? It’s actually rather bad for France, in a so-called democracy this is like a nail in the coffin, bye bye freedom, the French have finally woken up.

I don’t really like saying it, but I’ll say what I think: You’re a fascist.

  • jacobin777

@Sun…’Good for France. People are waking up in Europe”..is that the best unintellectual tripe you can come up with?

  • Sun

    @ Xithurrel

“Publications like these are an indication of poor economics and desperation to make money. Hating Muslims is a terrible business model but it is one people adopted solely because people out of work need somebody to blame for all their woes..”

I don’t blame them. I blame the left wing trash that let them in.

Good for France. People are waking up in Europe :).

But in all seriousness Xithurrel, why don’t you move. We all know how egalitarians like you are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo beyond us in intellect and moral superiority. Show us how it is done. Permanently move. You’re not Islamophobic are you?

  • Xithurrel

Publications like these are an indication of poor economics and desperation to make money. Hating Muslims is a terrible business model but it is one people adopted solely because people out of work need somebody to blame for all their woes – so Muslims will take the blame. It’s the same crap Jews endured and still do when it comes to the topic of money – blame the “Jew banks in Jew York”. The only difference is that Jews have endured this kind of treatment long enough to know how to basically ruin the entire model. So until Muslims organize legally and combat this kind of business model; many people will be making money off of causing pain and hurting innocent people. It’s all about organizing and becoming an inconvenience – but it comes with a price.

What about the brazen geeks and their love of CSI :P but to express such disgust at a person for following their faith is pathetic.
