Arson Attack on Australian Mosque

Whyalla mosque arson

Attacks on mosques and Muslims in Australia isn’t anything new, it has been a regular feature of the loon landscape.

(News.com.au)

Whyalla’s Muslim community has been praying outside in stifling temperatures above 40C after fires damaged their mosque.

The fires, which started about 4am on Thursday, are being treated as suspicious. A spokesman for the community, Hasan Aziz, said he believes the attack was a “hate crime”.

“The way it’s been carried out tells us that it’s a targeted crime, a hate crime,” he said. “In a town like Whyalla, of all the places, it’s very unlikely for such an act to be carried out. There’s been no problems in the past.”

The blaze caused smoke damage inside the Morris Crescent mosque after fires were lit at the front and back door of the property. “The front and the back doors have been burnt totally,” Mr Aziz said. “They put petrol on both of them and they lit it on fire.”

Mr Aziz said that the community, which meets twice a day at the mosque, has been forced to pray outside in searing temperatures. “It’s pretty bad. We can’t carry out any of the prayers, so we’ve had to do it outside,” he said.

The building was insured. A police spokesman said the fire caused minimal damage but appeared to be suspicious. Local Crime Investigation Branch detectives are investigating.

    Hi Luke,

You seem like a sincere individual in your search for a more balanced view on Islam. I and many others appreciate that.

“I am now lead to believe that this is a pro Islam site therefore I will
keep this in mind when reading articles. blogs, and comments here. It
certainly does seem as though any one not appearing in full support of
Islam is singled out for criticism on this site.”

I think you are mistaken in that statement. Besides your argument that we Loonwatch does not cover atrocities perpetrated by Extremists who claim to be Muslim (Loonwatch has in the past) I would like you to provide evidence of the fact that Loonwatch is pro Islam. Also, what exactly do you consider as being “pro Islam”.

As for the statement that anyone not appearing in full support of Islam is singled out for criticism, that is patently false. There are plenty of regular posters who are atheists, Christians, Jews, etc etc who have very significant disagreements with Islam and Muslims yet they do not face criticism. The only people that are criticized are those who are racists, bigots, and those who make statements without providing evidence. Sure, some commentators who are passionate in the defense of Islam will do that from time to time. But most of us will never criticize those who do not deserve it.

“But since this is also an anti-bigotry site, and a site that seeks to
enlighten people on the atrocities committed against innocent Muslims, I
thought it would also be the perfect site to renounce the ugly scenes
recently caused by the Islamic militants in Algeria and Mali. The
Muslims that recently murdered innocent people in Algeria and Mali, are
they not loons also? Should they not be exposed as loons on this site,
just like those who pretend that all Muslims are violent?”

If you were to message every regular commentator and writer on Loonwatch asking them whether they renounce these extremists and their actions, I will guarantee that 99% of them will. And will even in fact go further and speak out against such violence and such actions are against Islamic teaching. Like the mission statement says, this is a site dedicated to fighting bigotry against Muslims in the West. But to answer your question, yes they are Loons. Of the most dangerous variety and myself (and many others) denounce them unequivocally.

” I think this site has a great opportunity to push back against many of
the people who condemn Islam as inherently and consistently violent,
simply by renouncing violence perpetrated by Muslims. Are there not
sections of the Qu’ran and the Hadith that condemn violent actions as
anti-Islamic? I’m sure there are commentators on this site who has a
better knowledge of Islam than I, can you tell me if there is an
argument within Islam, the Qu’ran, or the Hadith that strongly condemns
Muslims who are violent and/or murderous? And if so, why shouldn’t this
site use these scriptures to oppose militant Islamic groups?”

Luke, there are many, many, many opinions by scholars, fatwas, Hadiths, Quranic verses that strongly and unequivocally condemns the killing of civilians, the terrorizing of a population, the destruction of property, etc etc. I don’t have time to list all but I would start by searching the archives. Loonwatch has published many articles using scripture to oppose militant Islamic groups.

Scholars from the US to Saudi Arabia and the world over have condemned terrorists and have said (based on the Hadith, Quran, and The Sunnah) that terrorism (killing of innocents, aggressive warfare, causing mischief in the land) is forbidden and is punishable by death.

I hope you stay and become a regular commentator. People with your mindset, those who seek a middle ground, are valuable in the fight against bigotry.

Solid Snake, and Kirook, I found this site via google when looking for a balanced view of Islam in the news. Hi Luke,

Is this your first day on the internet? It must be because you seem to be under the impression that everyone is ignoring the extremists in the Muslim world. Just type in Islam and violence in google, you will see there are dozens and dozens of hate sites devoted to chronicling the actions (both made up and real) of Muslim extremists and claiming that all Muslims are like that. LoonWatch is one of a small number websites (compared to the number of Anti-Muslim websites) fighting Anti-Muslim bigotry by groups of extremist Non-Muslims. The beauty of it is that LoonWatch does not generalize or attribute the actions of a few to all. You are absolutely correct when you say that this is not fair and balanced reporting, Anti-Muslim hate sites far outnumber Pro Muslim and Anti-Bigotry websites. This is just for the Internet, if you were to analyze the mainstream media (Cable News, print Newspapers, magazines) and the opinions of political figures one will clearly see that both are overwhelmingly critical of Islam and Muslims. Anyway, I think that is sufficient to get the point across. Although, if you are one of those people who think that the Media and government are giving Islam a ‘free’ pass then I must ask if this is your first day on planet Earth.

At first I wondered if the fire was caused by the extreme weather (116 F), but it appears to have been fuelled by petrol. The weather here has been extreme and has caused electrical fires.

  • Kirook

Well, we are a site dedicated to fighting bigotry. The members of those groups are horrible people, but what we are trying to do is stop people from making generalizations about Islam based on what Sheila Musaji has termed the “lunatic fringe” (al-Quaeda and presumably the Islamist groups that you mentioned). It would kind of defeat the purpose of the site if we were to post that type of story, but that doesn’t mean we condone it, or even are apathetic. No one should do that kind of thing to anyone else.

    Suspicious indeed.
