Gohmert: Radical Muslims ‘being trained to come in and act like Hispanics’

(RawStory)

Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert (R) on Wednesday connected the Monday bombings in Boston to the immigration debate and warned that “radical Islamists” were “being trained to come in and act like Hispanics.”

During an interview on C-SPAN, host Greta Wodele Brawner asked the Texas Republican about a bipartisan “Gang of Eight” proposal in the Senate that would increase funding for border security by $5.5 billion over ten years and establish a 13-year pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

“What I first thought after my prayers went for the victims and the families in Boston is, ‘My gosh, we’ve seen this in Israel,’” Gohmert recalled. “And after Israel had to suffer the slings and arrows and the deaths and the maimings… Finally the Israeli people said, ‘You know what? Enough.’ They built, over 70 percent of it is just a fence, and the rest is a wall, prevents snipers from knocking off their kids. And they finally stopped the domestic violence from people that wanted to destroy them.”

“And I’m concerned we need to do that as well,” he insited.

Pressing Gohmert, the C-SPAN host noted that Rep. Steve King (-R-IA) had speculated that the Boston bombings were perpetrated by a “foreign national” and that Congress should proceed with caution on immigration reform.

“We know that al Qaeda has camps with the drug cartels on the other side of the Mexican border,” Gohmert agreed. “We know that people are now being trained to come in and act like Hispanics when they’re radical Islamists. We know these things are happening, and it’s just insane to not protect ourselves and make sure that people come in — as most people do, they want the freedoms we have.”

As I’ve said many times before, Islam is not a race, and you Islamophobes repeat that many times, yet at the same time you continuously attack all Arabs and Asians, so apparently you equate Islam with “brown people.” And your hatred for Islam has nothing to do with what we believe. Hell, you go out of your way NOT to read the Qur’an and Hadith, or to learn a thing about Muslim history or cultures. Instead, you simply hate Islam because we exist, and because we are different from you. Its bigotry, plain and simple, and if you didn’t have us you’d be hating the Jews, or Chinese, or Hindus… Hell, we’ve actually seen several instances where anti-Mulsim bigots HAVE attacked Hindus, Sikhs, even Coptic Christians and Latinos or Greeks simply because they LOOKED Muslim.

I used to have respect for C-span, but they now invite these types of loons on. Being an “elected official” does not mean that you are rational and intelligent.

There are plenty of elected parliamentarians and politicians on both sides of the Atlantic that are absolute loons and bring nothing to rational and intelligent discussions.

More racism from the Islamophobia lobby. I suppose its not surprising, given that Fox News’ core audience consists of white Protestants with a persecution complex. They freak out over a half-black person being elected President, they freak out over the prospect Latinos become the demographic majority in the US, and they freak out over the idea of other religions being recognized. Hell, they even freak out over Bat Ye’or’s myth of Muslims/Arabs outbreeding white Europeans, even though that has been disproven time and time again.

I remember when right wingers were pushing this idea earlier. First it was the claim that al-Qaeda and other terrorists were slipping across the border unnoticed, disguised as Mexican immigrants (never mind that there are almost 4,000 miles of unpatrolled border with Canada that they could easily slip through unnoticed). Then we had claims that the Mexican border is littered with discarded Qur’ans and prayer mats (why fundamentalist Muslims would randomly throw away Qur’ans is again unexplained). And finally, we have stories that Muslims (“brown people”) are disguising ourselves as Mexicans (also “brown people”).

It combines two groups that conservative white Evangelicals/Protestants dislike and even fear. That makes it the perfect conspiracy theory for them, never mind that many Latinos don’t look particularly Arab or Persian, let alone like Pakistanis or Afghanis, and that most Muslims from the MIddle East and South Asia don’t speak fluent Spanish. Like I said, we are all “brown people.” Of course, this also ignores the incredibly diversity of the Muslim world. There are plenty of white Euro-American Muslims, East Asian Muslims (the largest Muslim country in the world is Indonesia), Latino Muslims, even American Indian Muslims.

In fact, here in the US, we have a fairly noteworthy black Muslim minority, and I’m not just talking about Nation of Islam (whose beliefs and teachings diverge significantly from every mainstream interpretation of Islam). It makes me wonder why racists like Gohmert haven’t siezed up on the idea of “secret Muslims” hiding in black communities. But then, that would be a little too on the nose. After all, blacks in America have successfully organized themselves into a political lobby. We Muslims have not, which is why we will continue to be victimized by politicians and fearmongers.

Honestly, I don’t see that at all. Yes, they support Israel as a symbol, but these people are just full of hatred. They hate Muslims, they hate Arabs, and they hate Mexicans. If there was a larger Jewish minority here you can bet that people like Gohmert would be spreading hatred against them too. That’s why we ALL have to stand in unity against them.

  • Zakariya Ali Sher

Actually, its pretty much racism designed to appeal to white Protestants with a persecution complex. They see Muslims as “brown people,” and Mexicans as “brown people,” and both as “enemies” of “real Americans.” Therefore we all must be the same.

To be fair, of course, Mexican culture was influenced by both the Moorish heritage of Spain and later 19th and 20th century immigration from Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Iraq and Palestine. Both Carlos Slim and Salma Hayek are of Arab descent, and tacos al pastor are basically shawarmas. Like a woman at my local halal grocer said, it’s a good mix.

However, I’m pretty sure that isn’t what Gohmert was referring to. Not to mention that Mexican is overwhelmingly Christian, specifically Catholic, including the Arab community.

    He’s probably thinking:
    -Muslims do bad things
-Muslims haven’t done anything bad lately
    -Muslims must be planing something
    -In USA
    -covertly
-Muslims are being trained to act like Hispanics…
    -Actually… that’s quite a stretch
-But it doesn’t matter, prosecuting Muslims is a good thing
