The EDL is known to be populated by many hooligans with affiliations and or allegiance to Neo-Nazi ideology and at times a barely concealed anti-Semitism.
For reasons of expediency and political exigency they have often taken the strategy of trumpeting an in your face fealty to Israel, regularly trotting out Israeli flags at their demonstrations, in the hopes of deflecting criticism that their xenophobia and bigotry may extend beyond Muslims. Mainstream Jewish organizations in the UK are appalled by the EDL and find the support extremists such as Pamela Geller, Roberta Moore and the “JDL” give to the EDL both disgusting and embarrassing.
In this vein, Bob Pitt of IslamophobiaWatch points our attention towards a quite blatant instance of the EDL literally recycling antisemitic propaganda in their Crusade against Islam and Muslims.
For those who question the links between the English Defence League and fascism, or indeed the clear parallels between Islamophobia and antisemitism, this is a cartoon recently posted on the EDL London Division’s Facebook page.
It is used to illustrate the conspiracy theory that graffiti featuring the letters EDL, which has proliferated on mosques and Islamic centres since the murder of Lee Rigby, is not the work of EDL supporters themselves but of Muslims intent on smearing the EDL.
As Exposing the English Defence League points out, the cartoon is in fact a clumsy adaptation of a cartoon popular in neo-Nazi and white supremacist circles, which portrays fascist graffiti on synagogues as part of a Jewish conspiracy to frame the far right.
