Pakistan: Legendary Humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi Has Passed Away

Abdul-Sattar-Edhi

Abdul Sattar Edhi embodied the deep core of Islamic spirituality wedded to social activism. His efforts and developing institutes serving the most vulnerable and poor in Pakistani society, often neglected by the state was deserving of a Nobel Prize. His story is amazing.

Pakistan’s legendary philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi, who devoted his life to the poor and the destitute, died on Friday at a hospital in Karachi following a prolonged illness. He was 88.

Edhi’s family announced his death and his son, Faisal Edhi, asked all people to “pray for the departed soul” of his father.

Earlier in the day, the family had announced that Edhi’s condition deteriorated and that he was breathing with the help of a ventilator. Edhi had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for the past several weeks and his son said he was suffering from kidney- and sugar-related problems.

Edhi, known as “Angel of Mercy” for his social work that also won international acclaim, established a welfare foundation almost six decades ago that he oversaw together with his wife, Bilquis Edhi.

The foundation owns and runs Pakistan’s largest ambulance service, as well as nursing homes, orphanages, clinics and women’s shelters, along with rehabilitation centers and soup kitchens across the country.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed his condolences and sorrow over Edhi’s passing and said he prayed that God will give the charity worker “the best place in paradise.”

Edhi was a “real gem and asset for Pakistan,” Sharif said in a statement. “We have lost a great servant of humanity. He was the real manifestation of love for those who were socially vulnerable, impoverished, helpless and poor.”

“This loss is irreparable for the people of Pakistan,” the prime minister added.

The funeral is due to take place Saturday in Karachi.

You don’t have much else to do in life huh?

    • Ali

Yeah so what? What kind if an idiot are you to scroll through 4 years of my profile? LOL what an idiot.

    • Ali

Nah idiot, the fact is you attaching the word liberal to anything doesn’t make it liberal. The only ones who object to ET are right wing scumbags like yourself.

    • Ali

I’m not embarrassed. You should be. Having your fellow admins post material that contradicts traditional Islam yet you go after me for a non-issue?

    • Ali

hahaha YOU were the one who engaged with me first. You throw a fit just because I said hijab is cultural? LOL

I have been checking this site since last year, I also checked older articles. I started commenting recently.

Ali’s hard on for insulting Pakistanis kinda reminds me of Dan, who use to comment on this site.

I mean, he uses the almost exact terminology to describe Pakistanis, has an irrational hatred of Pakistan, feigns concern for Pakistani women, complains of conservatives, etc. I mean he even derailed this thread similar to how Dan use to derail threads (with the topic of Pakistan in mid).

Wai…wait, could it be, could Ali be a Genetic Clone of Dan, I know Dan never use to change ethnicity and nationality every 10 minutes, but Ali could be an unstable clone with an identity crisis.

      Illisha, THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING !!! IT’S A CONSPIRACY !!! ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED !!!!!!!

The gulf states are indulgent, they could not care for the rest of the world (except the west, of course, gotta have the $$$ flowing in, right?). I definitely dislike them for their gluttony and lack of charity, but I have a soft spot for the UAE since I have family there, I still however dislike the UAE’s over indulgence of wealth, the lack of help towards the rest of the Muslim world (and even support for western neo colonialism) has made me pretty bitter of the wealthy gulf states.

Damn, Doctor, you exposed this fool with such precision, my jaw literally dropped.

Dang, I knew some Pakistani liberals were cowards and liar (like their conservative counterparts) but HOLY SHIT, I have never seen such person with such a deep rooted inferiority complex that he/she/it constanly changed nationalities. As a Pakistani I am ashamed and afraid, if this is suppose to be what my country produces, then Pakistan is FUCKED!!!

Pakistani ultra conservatives an Pakistani ultra liberals are going bring this country down, there is apparently no such thing as a middle path, sadly.

Pakistan needs social, political, economic and even spiritual change (since many of the people have forgotten Islam’s tenants, instead relying on words of illiterate mullahs and armchair pseudo western academics), but these ultra liberals and ultra conservatives will not bring about any change (too busy bickering at each other). One side does not want true Islamic ethics to prevail, instead wanting a destructive and foolish social order to prevail cause ‘culture’ (conservatives), the other side wants the Paskistani people to suck up and completely adopt western culture (along all the stupidity, promiscuousness and lack of responsibility), throwing our beliefs to the sideline for ‘progress’ and also feel bad for our skin colour, our culture, and generally ourselves (liberals).

    • Ali

Yeah you make literally no sense at all bringing trump into this. Did you hit your head that hard?

    • Ali

You suspecting and you flat our saying is completely different. Show me those screenshots. The fact that you need to go through my comments and take screen shots is just laughable.

    • Ali

Hahaha you calling me shameless? Submit a comment to ANY online fatwa site and tell them how you work with those who go against traditional Islamic theology. Post their fatwa on here so we can all see the expected response. The difference between you and me is that I don’t compromise my religion just to join forces with those who write against traditional Islam.
