How to Defeat Hate with 42 Cents

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas

The Grinch who stole Christmas is at it again.

For some, this “merry” time of the year is a special occasion to spread Islamophobia and hate around the United States.

First we had the loon pastors who turned a cheerful Christmas lights display into an occasion to spread their warm and fuzzy Christmas message “Islam is of the Devil.”

Then we had the anti-Muslim KKK (Kahane-Krazed Kaufman) rallying  his merry band of wackos against American Muslims who are partaking in an initiative to pick up litter from the streets because Moooslims are a dangerous terrorist threat.

Joe Kaufman

And now we have an email crusade aimed at pressuring the US postal service to stop including Islamic holidays in their holiday stamp group. The email crusade is replete with the general conspiracy nonsense we are used to from Islamophobes, that it was issued by President Obama (secret Muslim), linking the stamp to Muslim terrorists, etc. Take a quick read at the following news piece and then consider our little idea of how to push back against this rabid hate with just a few cents.

Muslim Stamp delivers e-mail boycott

St. Petersburg, Florida – It’s the holiday season and people are busy mailing out packages and greeting cards.

The Arabic says "Happy Festival."

The United States Postal Service offers a variety of holiday stamps including ones marking Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. But there’s one stamp that some people aren’t giving the stamp of approval.

It’s the Eid Greetings stamp, which honors two Muslim holidays. There’s an e-mail going around calling on “patriotic Americans” to boycott it.

Ahmed Bedier, President of the Tampa Human Rights Council and a Muslim, has seen the e-mail and he finds it troubling. “This is a form of hate mail. Hate speech,” says Bedier. “It can be very dangerous and it’s full of basically a lot of misinformation.”

The e-mail sent to 10 Connects does contain some factual errors. It says the stamp is new and that President Obama had it issued. However, the stamp is far from new. It’s eight years old and was created when George W. Bush was president.

Besides talking about the stamp, the e-mail also lists a string of terrorist bombings linked to Muslim extremists. The e-mail says that using the stamp would be a slap in the face to Americans who died.

For Bedier, that message amounts to cyber hate. “That would be similar to sending out messages like it was a Catholic who committed the Oklahoma City bombing; it was a Catholic who did this, it was a Catholic who did that. Let’s get rid of the Catholics.”

But one thing Bedier would like to get rid of is this e-mail. Just like the mobs at the post office, variations of it seem to surface every year. And that’s one holiday tradition Bedier wishes more people would help extinguish.

“I would recommend just hitting the delete button.”

The U.S. Postal Service and several rumor-debunking websites like Snopes offer information about the Eid stamp and the e-mail.

Here’s the news report with the full story:

Of course, the US Postal Service is not carrying stamps for other religious holidays and traditions celebrated in America, it’s just Islam, because Islam you see is taking over:

So what do we do about it? Well, how about we heed the example of the Swiss Businessman who took a stance against hate? LoonWatch is asking everyone who opposes Islamophobia and all forms of hate – whether you are Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Atheist, or something else – to make it a point to purchase and use Eid stamps for all your mailings in 2010. With just 42 cents, that you will spend anyway, you can turn a mundane daily task into a powerful statement against hate. We would call for the same if say Hanukkah or Kwanzaa was being targeted in this way. Join in the campaign and pass it on!

Order here or from your local post office.

I think my sister is doing something the same. I wish luck to you.

Joe is filth, but what about the filth you write at your site! It’s wrong to nuke AYRABS, but then you hate Jews. What is your problem. I saw your website.

  • George Carty

Marek23, Islam isn’t keen on religious iconography – that’s the reason why Islamic art is dominated by geometric patterns and Arabic calligraphy.

  • DrM

Well if isn’t little Joey Kaufman…the same Judeofascist crook behind the “terror-free” oil scam and “nuke all ay-rabs” :

At this rate Joey is going to end up like his mentor Irv Rubin.

  • Hotlanta

I love the Eid stamps and use them all the time, the US postal service won’t give two craps about these nutters. The only way I can see them discontinuing the eid stamps is if they stop all holiday stamps.

  • TeaTime

For anyone whose local post offices don’t carry the Eid stamps, you can buy them online from the USPS website: (sorry for the long URL)

Just a quick update that might affect the title of this article….first class postage stamps now cost 44 cents — the Eid stamp was reissued in this denomination in September 2009.

Thanks for the article, LW. I’ve seen the Eid stamp email forwarded around and the factual errors are just astonishing. I have a pane of the original 34-cent Eid stamps from when they were first issued in 2001 (given by a relative who works for the USPS), so I know for sure they are neither recent nor Obama-related.

  • AF

Unfortunately they dont sell them here otherwise i would’ve bought a few of them!

  • Snarla

I love freaking out my conservative relatives by using these stamps on my holiday cards.

  • Ryan

    wow. these guys are wussies.

  • Nabeela

The stamps are beautiful, and the Muslim one only has “3id Mubarak” in Arabic.

The right wing especially the Kahane and Dominionist supporters are notorious for these email campaigns with falsified information (as demonstrated during the Obama election campaign). Much was made about Obama being a stooge of Muslims, that he was being installed for a global Caliphate, that he was groomed by Muslims, that his birth was staged, faked, you name it…

This stamp email campaign is just one such smear….and we should STAMP it out by BUYING BUYING BUYING

and finally, since the email campaigner selectively picked out the worst acts of Muslims as an excuse to boycott the stamps, should he/she not be asking “Patriotic americans” to boycott computers, science, medicine, maths, astronomy, physics and all other inventions and innovations that Muslims gave to the world? Why are they ignoring all the benefits that Muslims brought to the world?

If not, then he/she is a prize hypocrite

unparalleled in the history of the world.”

“There is not a single aspect of European growth in which the decisive influence of Islamic civilization is not traceable”

“It is highly probable that but for the Arabs modern European civilisation would never have arisen at all; it is absolutely certain that but for them, it would not have assumed that character which has enabled it to transcend all previous phases of evolution.”

These guys are just media terrorists using the media to spread their hate speech.

Whomever began this email campaign should remember when Dwight D. Eisenhower dedicated the Islamic Center in Washington, D.C. in June 1957, (“Civilization owes to the Islamic world some of its most important tools and achievements”)

They should boycott all the many gifts in science and civilisation that we have given, after all Arabic was the language of science during it’s formative years

    BBC Four Science and Islam

    The Language of Science
Physicist Jim Al-Khalili travels through Syria, Iran, Tunisia and Spain to tell the story of the great leap in scientific knowledge that took place in the Islamic world between the 8th and 14th centuries.
Its legacy is tangible, with terms like algebra, algorithm and alkali all being Arabic in origin and at the very heart of modern science – there would be no modern mathematics or physics without algebra, no computers without algorithms and no chemistry without alkalis.

For Baghdad-born Al-Khalili this is also a personal journey and on his travels he uncovers a diverse and outward-looking culture, fascinated by learning and obsessed with science. From the great mathematician Al-Khwarizmi, who did much to establish the mathematical tradition we now know as algebra, to Ibn Sina, a pioneer of early medicine whose Canon of Medicine was still in use as recently as the 19th century, he pieces together a remarkable story of the often-overlooked achievements of the early medieval Islamic scientists.

We are indebted to the Arabic world not only for arithmetic but also for
algebra and trigonometry. Logarithms were invented by a mathematician called Al-Khwarizmi in the 7th century. Test tubes, the compass and the first surgical tools were all pioneered by Muslim inventors. A thousand years ago, it is said, Baghdad had 60 hospitals.

This scientific flowering was accompanied by the establishment of the first universities – or madrassahs. In a madrassah, the sheik or professor taught, literally, from a chair. He was assisted by readers. When the west
eventually replicated such places of learning, we borrowed such terms. The
curriculum in a madrassah was wide-ranging. Knowledge embraced not only
mathematics, science and medicine but technology and engineering. This
pursuit was also faith-driven. In Islam, study and the acquisition of
knowledge is an obligation for every male and female: the Prophet is quoted as saying: “Go even to China in pursuit of knowledge.” An open mind and the acquisition of new ideas, are requirements of the faith.

  • Darter

Excellent! Going to purchase a few booklets. I think the stamps look great. What do you all think? Beware though. That Arabic script can be dangerous!

  • Marek23

Notice how the Christmas and Hanukah even have religous iconography on them but the Eid stamp just says “happy festival” yet the hate loons still go nuts whining and bitching about islam taking over. They’re truly hyprocites of a rare kind.

  • Michelle

great idea.. I am not a moslim but I think this is just ridiculus and will def ask about the eid stamps

  • Mexican_lunch
