Muslims Stoning Christians in Michigan? Not quite…

Sensational, misleading headlines are a favorite tactic in the looniverse, and the notion Arabs in Michigan are “stoning” Christians is bound to attract attention.

Drama aside, there were some young people hurling water bottles and pop cans at some  “protesters” who were clearly their to provoke a reaction. Even some of the articles on the right wing site, The Blaze, leaned toward more honest reporting:

If you‘re looking to spread God’s love, it’s probably not a good idea to show up to the Arab International Festival in Dearborn, Michigan, with a pig‘s head on a stick and signs telling Muslims that they’re poised to burn in hell. Yet this is exactly what happened over the weekend when some Christians from an anti-Islam group showed up at the event and confronted Muslim adherents with some unwelcome messages.

One of the protesters yelled, “You’re going to burn in hell,” among other sentiments. The signs the individuals held were less-than-covert in their messaging as well. One read, “Islam is a religion of blood and murder” and another said “Muhammad is a…liar, false prophet, murder, child molesting pervert.” Clearly, those in attendance weren’t there to play nice.

Among the most tense moments during the Friday showdown occurred when some of the Arab Americans present at the conference began throwing water bottles and pop cans. Some of the attendees chanted “Allah-U-Akbar,” which translates to “God is the greatest.” The Christians responded with, “Jesus Akbar.” Most of the protesters who engaged in this debate were from an anti-Islam group called “Bible Believers.”

In the video, below, a man — purportedly part of the group — can be heard yelling, “You’re going to go straight to hell you little dirtbag, wicked heathen.” Then, he continued screaming at the the Arab attendees, claiming that they have “a religion of hate” and that God is going to “melt” them “one day in hell” (at another point he says, “You’re going to melt in the fires of hell forever!”).

Alan Noble sheds light on how the events were manipulated, and demonstrates once again that many stories that go viral in the looniverse can’t stand up to even rudimentary scrutiny. (H/T: CriticalDragon1177)

Muslims Stoning Christians in Michigan? Not quite…

by Alan Noble, Christ and Pop Culture

Earlier this year I wrote a excruciatingly detailed feature article describing how Wretched TV had deceptively edited footage of some Christian streetpreachers at the Arabfest in Dearborn Michigan in order to portray the Muslims in attendance as violent, bloodthirsty foreigners. I pointed out that the “Christian” preachers were led by Ruban Israel, a notorious street preacher (who was and is not supported by or connected to Wretched TV) who went to the festival specifically to agitate and incite the Muslims. If you look at unedited footage of the event, it’s clear that the “Christians” were inciting Muslims to hate, which, of course, never justifies violence, but it does explain why it happens.

I bring this up because it’s happened again. Ruben Israel returned this year to the Arab Festival and once again incited the festival goers to scream and yell and throw trash. Although Wretched TV did not report the story this year, it was picked up by The BlazeAmerican Vision, American ThinkerFrontPage Magazine, and other, smaller conservative websites.

Each of these reports has included and cited a YouTube video edited by The United West, a group “dedicated to defending and advancing Western Civilization against the kinetic and cultural onslaught of Shariah Islam.” Good journalism would demand that these sites check their source and consider possible biases, but, for whatever reason, these conservative news sites report on the event as if it the video was an accurate representation of what occurred. But it was not. Not at all. Here’s United West’s video:

I wish I had the time and energy to point out every deceptive edit in this video and all the manipulative ways in which this event was reported on, but I don’t. So here’s a short list, and if you’re interested in seeing more, watch the unedited, hour long YouTube video of the incident. Watch carefully. It looks a lot different if you’re paying attention.

1. The United West video (See here) and many of the reports on this incident either claim or insinuate that the police did nothing to stop the kids from throwing trash at Ruben and his friends.

However, in the unedited video, you can see the police interviene oncetwice (note the police dragging a kid off at this point–something none of the articles mention), thricefourse [sic] (note that this appears to be another arrest or citation? Again, never mentioned in any of the reports I listed), and I’m not going to bother looking for more examples.

Bottom line: the video lies/misrepresents the truth and each of these reports, either in ignorance (in which case they are examples of bad journalism) or knowingly repeats this lie or fails to challenge it (in the case of The Blaze).

2. Muslim adults repeatedly work to calm down and stop the kids from yelling and throwing trash. In fact, one, apparently, Muslim man stands in front of the Christians, protecting them from the angry crowd. Does this mean Islam is a religion of peace? Nope, it just means that this man (as well as many others in the video) wanted to prevent violence from happening. Does the fact that the “mob” of kids threw trash and possibly a piece of concrete mean that Islam is a religion of violence? Nope, it just means that some kids got offended and angry.

If we want to discuss whether or not Islam is inherently violent, we need to look for evidence elsewhere.

3. The video edits out the part where Ruben Israel explains to a police officer that they have a pig head on a pole because Muslims are “petrified” of pigs and so it “keeps them at bay.” No really. He says that. Can you understand now why a group of Arab kids might feel threatened by these predominately white, Christians coming to their cultural festival to shout at them that they are going to hell and that their religion is a lie? Get a bunch of kids together, mock their beliefs, try to ward them away with a pig head on a stick, yell at them, and no matter what religion they are, don’t be surprised if they start throwing trash. That doesn’t in any way justify their action, but it does explain it.

4. As you watch the video it is clear that the police helped protect the Christians when they could. Could they have done a better job? Perhaps. It’s not clear from the video how many people were in attendance (I believe it was around 100k) or how many officers were available to help out. But it is clear that those officers did in fact intervene and protect the Christians several times.

5. It is also clear that this group of Christians was almost entirely focused on angering these Muslims, forcing the police to protect them after they had incited violence, and complaining over and over again about their rights and how they were being persecuted. What on earth does this have to do with lovingly sharing the Gospel to lost people? How is a preoccupation with asserting your rights honoring to God?

6. In United West’s edited video (which has over 440,000 views in three days), they show a clip of an adult Muslim telling the kids to either jump the Christians or leave. What they cut out are the shots of this same man pushing kids away from the Christians, trying to disperse the crowdmultiple times. By cutting these shots out, United West has given the impression that this adult was egging the kids on to violence; when in actuality, he seems to have been calling their bluff and trying to get them to realize how foolish they had been acting….

  • These aren’t “Muslims” we see acting badly, these are kids. How difficult is it to incite kids?

    What crap.

  • @CommonSense,

Why don’t read this story in its entirety and actually use your “common sense” or am I to believe that’s something you don’t actually have?

This was not what people like Ruban Israel, and the “counter jihad” tried to portray it as.

  • CommonSense

What a bunch of muslim apologetics. The Christians behaved worse than the muslims? So it is worse for me to call you a name than it would be for you to punch me? How stupid is that. Islam holds Jesus in high regard? So what, from a Christian point of view you either believe he is the son of God, or you don’t. It doesn’t matterif you think he is a good dude.
Don’t get me twisted here, I am of neither side and in this incident respect neither side. But the Muslims were FAR more in the wrong here. Violence is NEVER an acceptable answer. Even more important, this is America, where even the most ignorant have the right to free speech on public ground. Whether you like it or not. If you don’t, move somewhere else, I suggest somewhere that practices sharia law.

  • dancer

These false xians are so ignorant (and inbred) they have no knowlegde of the fact that Jesus and his mother are held in extremely high esteem by Muslims. They are so abysmally stupid they don’t even know that the majority of Arab Americans are xianss or that American Muslims are the most peasceful, law-abiding bloc of American citizens we have. Talk about xian morons…. these guys are sooo ignorant… the only reason they can breed is that you don’t even need a brain to reproduce…

If you ome to town to deliberately start trouble so y9u can doctor a tape and look like heroes to your gullible pals you should be happy you walked out without needing crutches. You are NOT patriotic Americans… you are nothing but predatory reptiles.

  • dancer

These so-called xians came from out of town to provoke an extreme reaction with a PIG’S HEAD (the equivalent of someone defecating on the altar), mouthfulls of hateful invective and signs full of lies and insults – THEN they claim to be the victims. The police try to tell them repeatedly that they are provoking the response they are getting and making it impossible for the small number of police to control the situation. THey behave worse than the Muslims do and that’s for sure… especially if you watch the entire 1 hour film. These are sickening bullies masquerading as xians.

  • Larry A. Singleton

“telling Muslims that they’re poised to burn in hell”

Hey jerkoff. Isn’t that what the Muslims repeatedly say is going to happen to unbelievers. And what happened to free speech. Oh! It’s only free speech when it’s not around Muslims.

“it’s probably not a good idea to show up to the Arab International Festival in Dearborn, Michigan, with a pig‘s head on a stick”

Is that a subtle threat? Sounds like it to me. So much for the “religion of peace”. And isn’t it something that this is the site that supports the actions of those thugs? Yeah, It was all video trickery.

Question: “What should be my reaction if I happen to trip over a ‘foot bath’ in a Public restroom?”

  • Mark

    @ Zakariya Ali Sher

No because the people feel into their trap and you gave them more ammo and a wonderful tape to show how Muslims are intolerant.

You are right they are jackasses but you are playing their game.

At the Promise Keepers event in Washington a few years ago my friends talk about when praying a group of women took off their tops and ran around trying to get a reaction. They didn’t and left.

What this tape gave was those who want to hate all Arabs and Muslims how they are just violent people.

I have seen on bathroom walls where I worked Die Jew Die and my name. I never for a second thought it was anyway a representation of all Muslims. It was just a jerk.

You give the jerk this kind of attention they will turn it on you.

  • Zakariya Ali Sher

    @ Mark:

Yeah, except that these so-called ‘Christians’ had a bloody pig’s head on a stick. That’s pretty much asking for confrontation, no? These guys are not normal Christians. They are jackasses, much like that Phelps guy, who were trying to make a scene. They want the attention. Besides which, you act as if it were only Muslims at the Arab International Festival. It was a cultural event, not a religious one, and a good bulk of the Arabs in both the US and Dearborn are Christian.

  • @AJ

Good for you. If they continue, you could leave a link to this story here and ask them to refute it. Point out how it contradicts them. Also make it clear that you won’t accept websites like Jihad watch as sources. If they do, keep reminding them that those are bigoted hate sites and therefor not valid. Than Keep hammering in the fact that they can’t back up their claims with any objective sources.

  • AJ

I have been trying to respond to some “loving” people on the Blaze.

  • Mark

What fun we can have with an edited tape. If you think this was just poor Muslims or just poor Christians being picked on you are all fooling yourselves. Insults were heaved by both sides and that doesn’t justify the police telling them to go away.

Free Speech is a protected right that seemed to be the only victim here. I watch the kid throw the milk carton at the Christians. I saw the rain of stuff coming at the guys because they disagree about religion!

  • Bartholomew’s Notes on religion also just picked up on this. Here’s what he had to say.

Tensions at Dearborn Festival Written Up as Attack on Christians

Note that if you follow his link to Islamophobia Watch, there will than be a link directly back to this article. So Islamophobia Watch used us as a source.

  • Nesim

Let’s not beat around the bush. The Christians have the most radical and ignorant extremists. Those garbage people are the type to say “our religion is peaceful and Jesus loves all” all the while they are giving sermons on how genocide is permissible and that all that do not think like them deserve death facilitated by there hands.

The greatest lie is that peaceful protest of mahatma ghandi was what ended British occupation of India. The overwhelming evidence of history point otherwise. The british were more then happy to beat the hell out of passive protesters. It was the decline of the empire not peaceful resistance that ended the occupation.

  • mindy1

We do need a Ghandi type person 🙁

  • RDS

@Dehnus: Because any aspiring Ghandis would’ve been killed in a drone strike.

  • Dehnus

Sigh.. we need a Mahatma Ghandi in this world again. He would go to that conference and spread his arms in the middle. Welcoming anybody in a hug who wanted to come to the middle road of common sense and pacifism :).

Why don’t we have Ghandi’s anymore in this world?

  • @Rocky Lore

Yes the Christians were completely innocent victims here, even through they were taunting them and deliberately trying to provoke them. By the way, I noticed that you mentioned how you think that CAIR is Hamas linked on your other comment over at the original article, but not here. Its identical to this one, except for that one little addition. Is that because you know that people here will demand evidence that CAIR is Hamas linked? Evidence that you don’t have?

  • Well actually people are posting more comments, but he thought the argument I got into with Dan, Tony and Prophet Of Tolerance was off topic. You could argue with them or anyone else there, if you could relate the entire argument to the subject of the article.

  • Rocky Lore

We know damn well had it been Christians attacking Muslims, the Democratic Party, Eric Holder, and CAIR would be demanding hate crime charges.

  • You know what guys, forget about it. Alan Nobel, says we’re getting off topic so he doesn’t want us to post any more comments over there, sorry.

  • Hey fellow Loon Watchers, if you follow the link back to the original article that Alan Noble wrote some anti Muslim bigots have been leaving comments over there. I’ve doing my best to refute them, but I can only do so much. If any of you would like to drop by and lend a hand, you’re certainly welcome to do so.

  • Crow

They acted with greater restraint then I could have.

  • Omar

I particularly liked one YT comment:

“The Christian extremists are obviously trying to provoke the crowd, totally the opposite of how Jesus would spread his message. They are disrespectful assholes trying to cause trouble. We see them all the time holding up inflammatory signs at gay pride parades and other events. HOWEVER, the gays don’t respond with violence, they just mock the ignorant and carry on with life. Muslims need to learn tolerance and respect for others rights even in the face of insult” ..Courtesy of blankspace78

Although the Christian were obviously at fault with all these inflammatory signs, Muslims must learn to propagate tolerance! It is a very important to note that the spirit of tolerance is highlighted in Islam!

(To every People have We appointed rites and ceremonies which they must follow, let them not then dispute with you on the matter, but do invite (them) to your Lord: for you are assuredly on the Right Way. If they do wrangle with you, say, ‘God knows best what it is you are doing.’ ‘God will judge between you on the Day of Judgment concerning the matters in which you differ’)(Al-Hajj 21:76-69).

I pray that the Ummah will learn the spirit of tolerance! Ma3 el salama!

  • mindy1

Is that how Jesus would behave??? I do not think so 🙁

  • @Ilisha

Twitter is a great thing, I might not have found out about this, and alerted you guys to it, had it not been for Twitter. I happened to notice that Alan Noble was leaving as a reply to a bunch of people incorrectly reporting that a bunch of Muslims assaulted innocent Christians, unprovoked. You’ll be glad to know that he at least one of them to realize that he had made a mistake.
