Police investigation of mosque attack. (Jan 9, 2013)

Sri Lanka last year was the scene of sporadic violence and sustained anti-Muslim campaigns by extremist Buddhists; it has not abated and continues this year. (h/t: msmrishan)

Muslims Forced Out of their Homes Anuradhapura Malwathu Oya

Anver Manatunga (The People’s Blog)

A Mosque was burnt down in Anuradhapura last October (2012). The perpetrators of this crime have not been identified as yet, but last week, an extremist group of Buddhist monks went to the same area and protested to remove the mosque there. They argue that it is a sacred area for Buddhists.

While they protested the district agent came there and made a statement that he would remove the mosque within three months. He did not consult the Muslims who lived in the area before making this statement. And also this extremist group has forced all Muslims in this area to flee.

Now, once again yesterday (9thJanuary 2012) early morning (2.00 am) some unknown elements came and attacked this mosque. This mosque and 42 Muslim families who called it home in are in a bad situation.

I agree. It all needs to stop. Tamils, Singhalese and Moors killing each other in Sri Lanka. Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks and Albanians killing each other in the former Yugoslavia. Hutus, Tutsi and Twa in Rwanda, Asians in Uganda, Arabs in Zanzibar, Jews and Roma in WW II German, Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians in the Ottoman Empire, Paelstinians in Israel, Copts in Egypt, Shi’a in Pakistan, South Sudan and Sudan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, Tibet and China… so much violence. So much hatred. We need to stop attacking each other over skin color, ethnicity, language or religion and start working together. The so-called “Global South” will not get better from foreign aid and American movie stars making a stink. It will get strong again from UNITY, from South-South cooperation. We need to put aside our stupid bigotry and prejudices and work together. All of us.

Actually, I believe you are confusing Sri Lanka with Burma, another Buddhist majority country in SE Asia that has been persecuting their indigenous Muslim minority (and recent Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh and India; the Burmese government’s official position right now seems to be that Burmese Muslims like the Rohingya are “foreigners” from Bangladesh).

But yes, the US is slowly easing sanctions on Burma probably because they want to establish closer ties to the country. Knowing the Burmese, they will play the US and China against one another. The current regime is many things, but they are not Communists. They will no doubt take aid from China, even copy their methods (or worse, “improve” upon them) but in the end they will use them just as they used the Japanese invasion to kick the British out.

What really bugs me is that we see that the US now wants to maintain and increase friendly relations with this country — and some of this may be due to the influence of rival China in the area. It done not matter (these are Muslims) compared to the influence of rival China..
