How The Right Frames Muslims Through An Islamophobic Lens

Islamophobes see Muslims through a lens of hate, loathing, irrational fear and anger. This is why they are susceptible to the stupidities of seeing the following picture as a display of casual ambivalence/apathy in the face of horror.:

This is because they don’t view Muslims as human beings but rather as the demonic “other.” It’s also why they can’t make the connection of ambivalence and apathy when someone who looks like them, like this white guy walks past a victim.:

This is the general way bigots operate. Casually dehumanizing others. Maybe Mr. Texas Lone Star is hoping to hit it big and be the male Tomi Lahren.

Patriotic onanism is madatory for a nation whose ego didn’t deflate proportionally to its real loss of power. At least Khan is showing public concern for the inhabitants of his city, thus disproving the crude dichotomy of the West vs. Islam in the heads of those wannabe-crusaders, who abused discussed pictures to illustrate their worldview.

  • Isn’t if funny how NOT PC is the FBI?

“Terrorism is very much a product of individuals identifying themselves with a group that appears to be the target of aggression and reacting violently to that,” he says. “Continued U.S. military action will inevitably drive terrorist activities in this country, because some local people here will identify themselves with the victims of those actions abroad.”

Given the the US intelligence agencies recognize this link, we have to ask why doesn’t the public? Why are politicians and pundits lying the people? If the main objective is to defend the AMERICAN PEOPLE, it makes sense to make clear the link. But of course the military industrial complex is NEVER going to admit they are failing in their duty to protect the American people in favor of protecting corporate profits.

People would be outraged and rightly so. So we’re stuck with nonsense like “Islam done it” and “they hate our freedom.” I think people have to be exceptionally stupid to believe people would travel thousands of miles away to kill people because they’re free. Free to do what? Participate and SlutWalks and fall over drunk? No one cares.

  • CowabungaCreeper

    Shhhhhh… That’s not pc!

  • Joey Sanders

You speak so much of Islamic terrorism, while ignoring all the terrorist activities done in the name of Christianity. You seem to forget that George Bush talked about the Crusades and Christian domination before he invaded Iraq. There are numerous books out there about the influence of Christian Dominionism doctrine infiltrating the US military industrial complex.

Also, did you know that 2015 was one of the most violent years against abortion providers, since they started collecting data on that topic in 1977? What’s the matter? The media didn’t tell you. It wasn’t Muslims that carried out murders and bombings against abortion providers in America.

You are very choosy in stating certain facts about history. History is complicated. If India was conquered thoroughly by Muslims, then why is it a Hindu majority nation today? That would still be the case if India, Pakistan and Bangladesh were still one country like it was before the partition of 1947. The same with Spain and other European nations that were conquered by Muslims. They are Christian majority nations to this day.

I don’t blame you for your ignorance. There are many people who come here quoting history without realizing that much of the same stuff was going on, or is still going on, in the Western World. Currently, everything is being marketed as if it is uniquely Muslim.

For instance, if a Christian or Jewish man kills his wife in the Western World, it is called domestic violence. If a Muslim man kills his wife, it is usually called an honor killing. Why the difference? It is mainly to market Muslim violence as something unique only to them. That’s why people like you are brainwashed.

She sounds like a very intelligent and educated lady. That is the opposite of her detractors.

  • mindy1

That’s the problem with social media, sometimes a picture appears “shocking” but there is no context provided. 🙁

  • mindy1

    She looks sad 🙁

  • GaribaldiOfLoonwatch

He can’t. Superficial talking points don’t allow for thinking beyond basic taunts and childishly weak sarcasm.

  • If “terrorism” were rationally defined….

  • Alyeth

Yes, neither can I, why do people link terrorism to Muslims, when the majority of terrorism is committed by Christians?

  • Bill

“I’m shocked and totally dismayed at how a picture of me is being circulated on social media,” she said. “To those individuals who have interpreted and commented on what my thoughts were in that horrific and distressful moment, I would like to say not only have I been devastated by witnessing the aftermath of a shocking and numbing terror attack, I’ve also had to deal with the shock of finding my picture plastered all over social media by those who could not look beyond my attire, who draw conclusions based on hate and xenophobia.”

She said her feelings at the time were of sadness, fear and concern, and added that she had talked to other witnesses to try to find out what was happening and see if she could offer help. She then called her family and helped a woman get to Waterloo station. “My thoughts go out to all the victims and their families,” she said.

She sent her gratitude to Jamie Lorriman, who took the picture, for speaking in her defence.

  • I think George Bush came up with that.

On the one hand, they don’t want the foreign policy link to be made. That has to be obfuscated, above all else. So the alternative is to say the “hate our freedom.”

He could have chosen to place the blame squarely on Islam, so by comparison, this is ridiculous but less damaging. We might get worse with Trump.

Another thing politicians and pundits say that I think is ridiculous is that these people are “cowards.” I’m not the only to point out the things they do are not “cowardly.” They’re immoral and strategically foolish, but they aren’t cowardly. I would never want to attack anyone, but if I were such a person, I would have to muster a lot of courage to pull of the attack. It seems like an emotionally manipulative word.

  • Yausari

That’s another thing; I’ve never heard terrorist condemning western “freedom”! What’s up with that? Who is their spokesperson that keep coming up with this nonsense?

  • Bill

    Yes, you’re very clever.

What is worthy of comment is how people link terrorist attacks to immigration, to a lack of “border control” and to refugees.

The criminal was baptised in Kent, where he was born, in the mid sixties.

  • Yausari

“Male Tomi Lahren”? No, thanks. One Tomi Lahren is one too many

  • Bill

There is a different picture of her, taken by the same photographer a second later or earlier, here:

    She looks distraught.

  • Let’s consider what you’re implying.

If some Muslims in the past invaded others, that makes it okay to invade Mulsim lands today. If, for example, Persian Muslims invaded somewhere centuries ago, that justifies decimation of Iraq today.

By that logic, everyone can attack everyone. Muslims certainly don’t have a monopoly on historical violence.

Why don’t you defend what the West is doing now? Explain why an American-led coalition can wreck a country like Iraq, leave no avenue for justice to the victims, and expect that no one will ever retaliate or attempt to deter further aggression.

I don’t think you can defend the current behavior of the Western Imperial powers, nor the reflexive blaming of Islam as the root cause. So you resort to, “well they did it too,” where “they” is all Muslims throughout history.

As I said, if we’re going to reduce violence, we have to get above childish taunts. Apparently you don’t want to do that. So you can take your childish taunts somewhere else.

  • It’s not because of events hundreds of years ago. It’s because of what the Western Imperial powers are doing right now.

Simple common sense should tell you that you can’t rampage across the globe killing and plundering and believe people will just lie down and die quietly. Even the CIA acknowledges the concept of blow back.

If you actually want to reduce violence, you’re going to have get above sarcastic and childish taunts. Terrorism doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

  • I can’t believe how people aren’t smart enough to link their own side’s colossal violence with the blow back it generates. It’s pure coincidence that the Western imperial powers are wrecking entire Muslim-majority nations, one after another, and Muslims are attacking the West.

  • Mark Hamlin

I can’t believe how people link terrorist incidents to Islam. It’s obviously just pure coincidence that the perpetrators just happen to be muslim. These right-wing racist bigots should read their history. In Islam’s 1400 years never has a single act of violence taken place in the name of the religion of peace.

  • Alexandra Grönvall

If I were to guess, she’s well aware that she’s in the middle of the attack, she knows there’s a woman on the ground next to her.
Maybe she’s too shocked to behave entirely rationally (most of us would be).
Maybe she’s offered to help, but her help wasn’t needed.
Maybe she’s texting friends and family to let the know she’s safe, but shaken.
Maybe she’s finding out where to go to donate blood.
Maybe she’s checking the police announcements, to find out what she should do.
    Maybe, she’s just being human.

  • AJ

The Muslim woman seems to have an emergency of her own with her hand on the side of her face and the feelings of shock on her face. Maybe she is reading the exact same news on her phone (not realizing she is walking past it) getting extremely worried that it would be a Muslim or get blamed on a Muslim 🙂 J/K.

  • Another “they hate our freedom” speech. Ugh. We need to get past the self-congratulatory obfuscation and have a real conversation.
