Mayfield mosque plan OK’d months after rejection

MAYFIELD, Ky. — City officials in Mayfield have unanimously approved a request to use a building as a mosque.

The Mayfield Board of Zoning Adjustment approved the petition Tuesday from Khadar Ahmed after rejecting the same request over the summer. Board members said they turned down the August request over concerns about limited parking around the small commercial building near the city’s downtown.

Hundreds showed up for that meeting, but The Paducah Sun reported that no one spoke against the petition Tuesday.

“I think some reason and common sense had settled in on the minds of the community. And I think the community as a whole wanted to do the right thing,” said Bill Deatherage, a Hopkinsville attorney who represented Ahmed at the meeting.

The board rejected the first zoning request when opposition to a planned Islamic Center in lower Manhattan near the World Trade Center site was in the news.

Many of the 250 people at the August meeting cheered when the proposal was rejected, the newspaper reported.

Ahmed made the request on behalf of a group of Somalis who moved to Graves County to work in a chicken-processing plant. The American Civil Liberties Union got involved after the petition was initially rejected, Deatherage said.

Deatherage said he was asked by the ACLU to represent Ahmed due to concerns of religious discrimination.

Deatherage said Tuesday that most of the comments at the meeting were positive about the mosque. He said one speaker read a statement that said the “eyes of the nation” were on Mayfield.

“May be the Church has to organize another Crusade against Islam.”

    Hopefully it won’t turn out like the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th crusades.

Perhaps they can start another “Children’s Crusade” and send you and the rest of the molested kids.

  • Khushboo

I’m a Sunni and I totally believe Shias are Muslims too and vice versa. Zak, I think Porky was unsuccessfully trying to start a drama but it backfired. haha

  • Shi’a aren’t considered Muslims by Sunnis? That’s news to me! I guess my Sunni friends are going to have to stop talking to me, LOL. Seriously Halal, that’s like saying Catholics don’t consider Protestants ‘true’ Christians. Have you ever heard of the Amman Message? Did you know that the first President of Pakistan was a Shi’a? And a convert to Shi’ism at that! And come to think of it, Asif Ali Zardari is a Shi’a as well!

And as for Sufis, both individual Sufis and their respective brotherhoods are very much an important part of Islam. Rumi is practically a cultural hero in Turkey and widely read throughout the Muslim world. In Iran, the poetry and music of Sufi mystics is cherished. Pakistan has hundreds of saint shrines. So does Morocco. Hell, most politicians are affiliated with the Mourides in Senegal and you can barely walk down the street without seeing photos of Cheikh Amadou Bamba. This might blow your mind, but because Sufi brotherhoods aren’t ‘sects,’ there are some Sufis who are Sunni (like the Tijaniyya in Africa) and some who are Shi’a (like the Nimatullahi).

Anyway, having rebutted the butthead, lets move on to the actual article because there is something very interesting imho. Notice that the masjid WAS eventually approved…. AFTER months of rejection, and perhaps more tellingly, AFTER the election! That’s not a coincidence. I suspect that this wave of Islamophobia has been largely political and is perhaps being funded and/or supported by some outside force. Just something to consider.

Let’s hope that this “sudden outbreak of common sense” persists. I get the feeling more Americans were turned off by the anti-Muslim backlash (around Park51 and Terry Jones) and the anti-anti-Muslim backlash is gonna be bigger. Pray that this is a good sign

“@ Mohammad Abd Al-Haqq 😛 robably you are not aware that Ahmedi’s are not considered :MUSLIM: by all the sect of Islam.Shi’tes are also considered Non_Muslims by the Sunnis.Sufi’s are looked on with suspicion as well.”

More proof that you are a loon! The other day i was reading another idiot who like you and jihad bob think they have the requisite knowledge to educate me, a Muslim, about my OWN religion. This idiot said that the reason there are so many Muslims in the world, 1.57 BILLION and counting, is because of high birth rates and because most Muslims don’t know much about their own faith. He said most Muslims are nominal Muslims, and that “real Muslims” are the terrorists/”fundamentalists”/extremists. i’m sure you probably agree as evidenced by your lame attempts at proselytizing here. i am quite familiar with tassawuf and tazkiyyah, Ahmadiyya, and the Shi’a denomination; i am Muslim after all. The issue here is building churches in Saudi Arabia and my comment was a condemnation of certain Wahhabi practices. Not all Muslims consider Ahmadis heretics and mainstream Sunni Muslims do not consider Shi’as heretics or all Sufis with suspicion. Only extremists consider them as such.

“Islam is basically an intolerant ideology towards other sects.”

What other sects? Sounds like you’re the one who thinks salafis and wahhabis along with terrorists and extremists are the only legitimate Muslim groups. who is the real intolerant one here? Why not let Muslims be Muslims? Your pretend cry for tolerance is only a smokescreen for your exasperation at the inability of nutty missionaries like yourself to “witness and spread the gospel” in Muslim majority countries.

“Inspite of all the murders of Catholics all over the world by the Muslims, the Catholic Church has been very patient with the Muslim world and offered help every time the Muslim countries have faced natural disasters.”

In spite of the millions of innocent Muslims being murdered worldwide by those proclaimng themsekves to be Christians, we mainstream Muslims are patient and careful not label all Christians as violent, dominionist extremists, bent on “spreading the gospel worldwide”/making the whole world Christian through the use of violence.

“That must end now.If you can not change the winds, you have got to adjust your masts.May be the Church has to organize another Crusade against Islam.”

You do realize that Crusade means a violent action and a modern crusade against Muslims is a call for genocide? sounds like your only solution to the so-called evil actions of Muslims as a result of Islam is an evil response on behalf of “Christendom”. Good luck with that.

Small sausage how about a mosque in vatican city, a country in its own right! Or maybe even a synagogue or temple? My rather under developed friend there are churches all over the Middle east, why such a hang up over one country! Not all Muslims are Wahabi just as not all christians are you!

  • muhammad, I don’t have any problem with one like the Vatican is in negotiations with to build in order to serve the Catholic community but I agree with you, the ‘evangelical’ prats sort are not welcome. The fact that there is only a handful of mostly Catholic Christians in Saudi when compared to the rest of the population negates the need for mass Church biulding as envisioned by the nutters. As for Mecca etc, simple supply/demand economics, there are no Christians there so thus no need for a Church, that can’t be argued with (but watch Mr Pork try).

  • muhammad ‘abd-al haqq

Opposition to this mosque and others across the US is nothing more than proof that the “Ground Zero MegaMosque” debate/debacle/controversy was about Islam/Muslims, and not sensitivity to 9/11 families and ‘hallowed ground”.

Khushboo,As for the Saudis allowing churches in Saudi Arabia, i’m a little ambivalent about that possible slippery slope. What type of church? The one that Halal pork attends? We all know what types of Christians would be building churches there. What about Mecca and Medina? Should we allow Churches there too? i think Saudi Arabia would be better off allowing Shi’a and Ahmadi masjids and Sufi shrines and masjids in this religio-political climate. Just my humble opinion.

    Allahu A’lam

  • Khushboo

Porky, for once I agree that Saudis should allow churches.

  • When is commonsense going to enter into the heads of Saudis to allow a Church in that country.Recently 40 Christians were arrested and jailed for holding a private Church Service in a private house.Darkness is certainly always scared of the LIGHT OF THE WORLD-Jesus our LORD,whom SATAN HATES.

  • Khushboo

Yes mohammed, now we can move forward with our evil plans. *petting white cat while scheming*

  • Excellent! Right under their noses we establish another foothold MWAHAHAHAHA

  • Dawood

I wish them well, and hope this is sanity returning to the whole debarcle.

  • Justin

Didn’t they know it’s offensive to build a mosque 1,000 miles from ground zero? (sarcasm intended)

  • Rob

excellent!….our plans are coming to fruition…
