Palestinian assailed by Israeli women, stripped of hijab

A Palestinian woman waiting at a light rail station in Jerusalem on Monday was attacked and stripped of her headscarf by religious Jewish women, Israeli newspaper Ma’ariv reported Tuesday.

According to bystanders, a young Jewish woman punched the Palestinian suddenly as she was passing by the station. A friend of the assailant began aiding her in beating the Palestinian, pushing her against the wall, and ultimately ripping off her headscarf.

The Palestinian was accompanied by an old man who tried to push the attackers away to no avail.

The event occurred at about three o’clock in the afternoon. It is unclear whether the incident involved only the two assailants mentioned in witness accounts, or a larger group shown in the photo.

“There were about 100 Orthodox and yeshiva students who disembarked the tramway and spotted an Arab woman accompanied by an older man,” a witness, who photographed the event, told Ma’ariv.

“It developed into arguing and yelling, and I don’t know what the content was that everyone jumped on her.”

According to the witness, an activist named Dorit Jordan Dotan, a municipality security officer passively watched the event and seemed to be smiling. Many residents also stood by.

“The entire time, the guard stood and smiled and did not even try to break up the fight,” a witness said.

Dotan confirmed that the incident took place at the station where a group of young people had just arrived from the train, but seemed to downplay the event by suggesting the attackers were intoxicated.

“Young people drink a lot of wine for Purim. Screams were heard everywhere. A woman tried to fight [the Jewish students] but they yelled at her not to dare touch the Jews and continued to beat [the Arab woman],” Dotan said.

Following publication in Ma’ariv, police launched an investigation into the case.

“It’s a shame that the Arab whore didn’t die”

On the day the report was published, Israeli police officer Ariel Shapiro re-posted the article on his Facebook page and issued a chilling endorsement: “Very good,” wrote Shpiro “It’s a shame that the Arab whore didn’t die.”

The message was publicized by Palestinian Member of Knesset Ahmad Tibi.

Israeli army and police officers have come under fire in recent weeks for showcasing dehumanizing images of and slogans about Palestinians. The most famous of these is an Instagram photo of Mor Ostrovski, 20, showing the crosshairs of a rifle being aimed at the head of a Palestinian boy.

Thanks for the sentiment, I guess I am a little sensitive because I am one of only a handful of Jewish commentators here, I just want to make sure that people don’t think that that has anything to do with the Jewish faith. Thanks for being my blog friend :))

  • Lawrence of america

Its not your place to apologize for extremists, and its not “Jews” who did this. Its zealots and indoctrinated racists. You are responsible for this as much as I am responsible for 9-11

  • Tanveer Khan

    Ahhh, if only. xD

  • Leftwing_Muslim_Alliance

OOOO look ! the links gone ! Now only if I could predict the lottery numbers with equal aplomb.
    Sir David 😉

  • http://www.loonwatch.com/ Ilisha

Of course you’re right, JSB. We need to stand firmly against all forms of hatred and bigotry.

  • Tanveer Khan

Have you seen the picture of a jews brain? I honestly have no idea how you can post something like that and yet have the confidence to write ‘No Violence No hate’. Strange world. xD

  • Tanveer Khan

Maybe you’d want to rephrase that Mr Kyle. Like Emir JSB has pointed out it does sound a bit too general.

  • Tanveer Khan

Yes, you are right. When i wrote that comment i had gone to the article and only looked at an extra 2 or 3 articles but when I looked through more i found them very anti semetic. I shouldve changed the comment to the website as a whole is anti semetic.

  • Leftwing_Muslim_Alliance

I am not disagreeing with you JSB I only had time to look quickly at the one page that was linked too ,not read other pages on that site .
The fact that Tanveer and I plus your good self are pointing this out will I am sure will highlight this to the Mods resulting in action 😉
    Sir David

    Mindy…
As your friend (at least as far as it goes in this setting), please do not feel you are obligated to apologise for people who do this…just because they live in Israel.
I dont see any ‘Jewishness’ in a group malling of a defensless woman. I see cowardness, just as we should see when an EDL member spits on a woman, or beats a shop owner. All of these types of people, no matter where they live, or the excuse they use are cut from the same evil cloth.
The same goes for the people who do these things ‘in the name of Islam’. I do not feel personally obligated to apologise for any hate and bigotry that I dont condone, support, or participate in.
I think you should be the same. Maybe one day Mindy, you and I can stand somewhere together, and shout down these kinds of people…but, you have no reason to apologise for criminals like this.

    Tanveer and Sir David:

The site is clearly anti-Semitic. It don’t think it uses terms like Zionist, Jew, and Israeli interchangeably; it seems as if it thinks it is okay to hate each group. As for owning all the banks, they do have a page titled “Jewish Power and Influence in U.S. and World Business and Finance” as a drop-down in the “Jewish Finance” section.

The LW article here rightly notes an instance in which some people, in this case some Israeli Jews, attacked someone for no other reason that we can see other than her religion. That attack is shameful and I denounce it one hundred percent. I am not happy to see such articles here, but the fault lies with the attackers, not those who publicize such incidents.

However, the fact is that the comments here show signs of non-verbal intolerance not worthy of a site whose About section begins “Loonwatch.com is a blogzine run by a motley group of hate-allergic bloggers.” Besides this link, we have comments like “X sure know how to make people hate them … I for one don’t like them at all.” (right now, 2 up votes, no down votes) and “the X are not our ‘favorite’ people … hopefully you can understand the dislike” (right now, 7 up vote, no down votes). In both those comments, the term used was “Israelis,” not the Israeli government or even the state of Israel. If X had been Muslims, those comments could have been lifted straight from Atlas Shrugs or JihadWatch.

One cannot argue that Muslims in general should not be hated for the bad actions of some Muslims and then justify hating another group for the actions of some of their members. At least, one can’t do that without being a hypocrite. When people support hating or disliking people grouped by race, religion, nationality, ethnicity, etc., they justify hatred of all groups. And, when done here, it also tarnishes LW, as Islamophobic sites have cited comments here as “proof” that LW is not actually anti-hate, but is defending one group while demonizing others.

Again, I condemn the attack described in the LW article. And I condemn citing it to justify hating any group of people other than the individuals involved in the attack and those individuals that demonstrate their support of it.

  • Leftwing_Muslim_Alliance

    I agree Tanveer .
They seem very sloppy about using terms like Zionist , Jew and Isreali interchangably . Equating one with the other and all bad.
What do you think Mods ? I accept its above the type of site that says-“Jewish baby eaters rule the world because they own all the banks “-rubbish found elsewhere on the net .
    Sir David

  • Tanveer Khan

Are you sure that website is good? It says No violence No hate but alot of the articles seem anti semitic.

  • Tanveer Khan

Mindy, you had absolutely nothing to do with it. I know that most jews would find this as distasteful as we do. There’s no need for you to apologise to us. Like Heinz said we always see you speaking out against discrimination against Muslims. Only a fool would think you approved of assaulting anyone.

  • Rights

You don’t need to apologize for anyone, Jew or not, Israeli or not, Zionist or not.

  • Razainc_aka_BigBoss

You should have to apologize for the every Jew who does something wrong just like Muslims shouldn’t for the actions of every Muslims who does something wrong this what those who see people as a collective want us to do

  • Heinz Catsup

& such a feeling is normal to have but nonetheless, you must remember it wasn’t you who perpetrated such actions in the first place.

  • mindy1

Aww thanks, it just bothers me that people like them think they are speaking for those like me, when they are not

  • Heinz Catsup

You had nothing to do with this so why should you apologize for a few rowdy Jews acting this way? You’re someone I’ve always seen speaking out against injustice against Muslims and others on the various articles on this site and as a result I think it’s easy to tell which side you’re on, so don’t worry about having to apologize.

  • mindy1

On behalf of all Jews I am sorry :(

  • mindy1

On behalf of all Jews I apologize, this is NOT what our faith demands of us
    :(((

  • Kyle Renner

Israelis certainly know how to make people hate them, don’t they?

I for one don’t like them at all.

  • Tanveer Khan

Cue the shouts of ‘Mooslem Takkeeyah propaganda!’ in 3, 2, 1…
And Mr Ariel Shapiro, it is not often that I threaten someone seriously, but if I could get my hands on your neck…

  • Nur Alia binti Ahmad

Of course I hope you all in the west understand why the Israelis are not our ‘favorite’ people.
This story and pictures are all over the internet, and have been in the news media for 2 days now.
This is how we see Israel on a daily basis, Palistinians being demeaned and other Israelsi participating, cheering it on, or looking away in in thier hearts are disappointed that ‘the Arab didnt die’.
Understand that this is ONE of serveral stories about Israels mistreating Palistinians THIS WEEK that we know about.
So…hopefully you can understand the dislike of us…when so many people died to save thier parents and grandparents…only a generation ago…from this very fate.
