Germany: Rightists fight Minaret, Dentist Refuses to Treat Muslim Teen

A while ago we did a piece on European Loonieness, and it seems like that will continue for a while. Is this a culture war or a fight for European identity.

Far-Right Rhetoric Fuels Opposition to Minaret in German Town

A small Muslim community in a western German town would like to build a minaret on its mosque. But the plan has triggered passionate opposition from locals, many of whom rely on rhetoric from the extreme right in railing against the “symbol of Islam’s quest for power.”

“Willkommen,” reads the stencilled print on the wall along the riverside boardwalk in the small town of Völklingen. Not content to just welcome its German guests, however, the message is translated into a number of languages. “Bienvenue … bienvenidos … velkommen,” it reads. And “hosgeldiniz,” a nod to the city’s substantial Turkish population.

Elsewhere in the city – particularly in the quarter known as Wehrden – Muslim immigrants may not feel quite as welcome. A small mosque on the banks of the Saar River there has applied for a permit to build a small minaret on its roof – triggering a wave of at-times vehement protest reminiscent of the fuss surrounding the November 2009 referendum in Switzerland to ban minarets in the country.

“I am against the Islamification of our fatherland!” reads a message, posted by “Tommy” on the Web site of the local paper Saarbrücker Zeitung. “Islam is the greatest threat facing humanity,” he adds.

The debate in Völklingen is once again showing how quickly right-wing rhetoric can cross over into the mainstream when it comes to debates on Islam in Europe. Local right-wing extremists – two of whom are in the Völklingen city council – have argued that minarets are “symbols of Turkish dominance.”

The local news paper has used the exact same rhetoric on its editorial pages. “This minaret should not be built,” the Saarbrücker Zeitung wrote in late January. “It symbolizes Islam’s quest for power and is nothing less than a provocation. In the course of the Muslim conquests, minarets were first used as watch towers and only subsequently as religious symbols. Following the violent seizure of new territories, minarets were built as manifestations of Muslim rule.”

Minaret opponents are now looking into the possibility of holding a referendum on the issue in Völklingen.

Germany is also the scene of a Dentist refusing to treat a teen named Cihad, one way of spelling Jihad, because she believes it means “Holy War.”

German Dentist Refuses to Treat Muslim Teen

An orthodontist in the state of Baden-Württemberg has reportedly turned a 16-year-old boy out of her practice because she was offended by his name – “Cihad,” an alternate spelling for “Jihad,” which she interpreted to mean “holy war.”

The doctor in Donaueschingen told local daily Schwarzwälder Bote on Friday that she believed his name was a declaration of war against all non-Muslims and refused to treat him.

I’d also like Lou to note that Christendom in history has been the LEAST tolerant, and most viciously bigoted realm in history. Non-Christians were not allowed anywhere in Europe, and Muslims were killed on sight, with very few exceptions.

Ever wonder why all Eastern cultural affections seems to end abruptly in Turkey? It’s because non-Christians and non-whites were not allowed in Europe at all. Ever wonder why Muslim sailor became synonymous with pirate? Because non-Christians were not permitted to sail in the Mediterranean, and all Muslim ships were attacked on sight.

It’s Europe’s utter intolerance that makes them feel so besieged today.

    Hey Lou:

Minarets serve one purpose- they are used to call for prayer. If this purpose is made obsolete (lets say, with a prayer call ban), then they stand as architectural homage to the practice of calling for prayer, the way a churchbell is symbolic even if it doesn’t ring. Essentially, they want to ban our church bells.

And i like how you perpetuate the fascist modernist mentality of Europe with your statement about Turkey’s military hope. Truly, force and violence is the only thing Secular Europe understands. If the people of a nation want more of an Islamic character, then democracy be damned, right? Send in the armed thugs to force secularism.

Finally, your statement about Muslims tearing down churches is irrelevant and erroneous. It would be like my referring to photos of the Lord’s resistance Christian terrorist group beheading people in Africa. It doesn’t really prove that there’s a global Christian Jihad against all non-christians.

If Muslims destroy Christian places as a general policy, then why are the oldest churches in the world in places Muslims have ruled for over 1000 years?

    @ George Carty

Yeah, kinda realized that later on….LOL… :)

    Thanks man!!

  • George Carty

iSherif, the English “j” sound is spelt “c” in Turkish, so “cihad” in Turkish is pronounced “jihad”.

  • TYO

“wow, since when does Jihad = Holy War?”

There seems to be different types of jihad:

    Lou

Oh dear, I don’t suppose one is likely to read such a confused uninformed and wilfully ignorant as your above post.

A minaret first and foremost is there because it acts as a utility in the call of prayer that is why it was developed. It eventually became an architectural feature.

As my erstwhile posters noted actually the “tearing down” of churches was extremely rare in comparison to their contemporaries, that is why you will still find beautiful historic churches in Muslim countries. It is unfortnate if Bosnian Muslims tore down a church shame on them but I will warrant knowing the animosity redulent in the Balkans; many mosques have been torn down to.

Now here is a nice story from Egypt where mulsim architects renovated the worlds oldest Christian monastery, ” nice people these muslims”.

Lou, put up or shut up.

  • Mohamed

    Lou,
Your ignorance or most probably willful ignorance and preference to believe what’s more convenient to your bigoted world view than reading real history is really pathetic. In fact whenever the arabs conquered a predominantely christian land they always made a clear point of not praying in churches so they wouldn’t be turned to mosques later and they’ve also made a point of allowing Christians snd Jews to worship freely and unbothered, which is a far cry of what happened to the moslems and jews after the capture of Jerusalem during the crusades or after they were kicked out of Spain. The habit of turning churches into mosques was practiced only by the Ottoman turks after entering Constantinople 700 years after the appearance of Islam, a practice that was never sanctioned by Islam.
And not to try curing you from your islamophobia and racism, most probably it’s genetic or some nice childhood, but no one has ever mentioned that the minarets have anything to do with the practice of Islam, they’re just an Architectural expression that the Arabs adopted after entering Egypt and saw the obelisks, which gave them the idea of pointing to god in heaven, which, and that’ll shock you, was the precursor to the Gothic architectural style that the Europeans learned from the Arabs in Spain and during the Crusades.
So, could you please enlighten me and tell me what’s the source of their “political statement” as you’ve mentioned?

    Lou:

read the article please. Anyways, I pass by two churches everytime I go to school and are in close proximity of my school. They have tall “spires” I guess u could call them, each with the cross on top. Does that have anything to do with Christianity, and doesn’t it show the supremacy of this religion in America? To make matters worse, it’s church bell rings every morning and gives me the worst headache. I have no idea why they do that, but is it not safe to conclude that their trying to impose their annoying practices on me?

That’s not my opinion; I’m simply replacing Muslim minarets with Christian “spires” personally, I think the churches are beautiful buildings and the church bell is one of my favorite sounds. I’m just making a point tho.

  • Lou

Germany is less than 5% turk, Leonora. Unfortunately, the turks are undergoing a re-islamification process of their own, and Kemal Attaturk is rolling over in his grave. Well, there is still the Turkish Army.

Minarets have nothing to do with the practice of islam. Nothing, nein, zilch, nada. They are solely and conclusively a political “statement”.

I always found it amusing how when the muslims conquered a Christian territory, the first thing they always did was to turn the churches into mosques. (Or just tear down the churches like they did recently in Bosnia, very well publicized photographs those were. Such nice folks, the muslims.) Can only guess they figured to gain some “religious credibility” that way.

  • Gordon Bennet

    Leonora

Even though I am not German ( I am a British Muslim), it would be wrong to make judgements about Germany based upon the actions of a few small minded people. I spent three happy productive years in Germany. While it has its problems especially in the poorer East of the country the vast vast majority of Germans are welcoming and tolerant people.

  • Ryan

I would sue that fool for all she’s got. She obviously has no clue what jihad actually means, and you cannot legally turn someone away. She should be stripped of her license

  • iSherif

Cihad an alternate spelling for Jihad??? Yikes, some of them Islamophobes have gone over the edge…!

  • Leonora

wow, since when does Jihad = Holy War?
Emperor, please show more of other countries… I know German has a huge Muslim population, but LW makes it seem like Germany is a terrible place, full of loons.
