Rabbis’ Wives Urge “Holy Race” to Stay Pure

Racism is alive and well in Israel, especially amongst many of the Haredi nationalists. We have reported now for quite sometime on the phenomena of blatant racism and supremacism on racial and religious levels that has sprung into open discourse in Israel and Palestine due to events in Safed, Israel.

The religious are viewing this as a pitched battle between them and Secularists. They view themselves as a bulwark defending their religious and racial integrity and it has reached a point now where it is in direct conflict with the law and the other cultural strains and forces in society.

The language of a “holy race” of “saving our daughters” and “future generations” is reminiscent of the German women groups such as National Socialist Women’s Organisation, League of German Maidens (Hitler Youth) and the SS--Helferin.

Imagine if this Lehava had been a Muslim organization. You can bet that the anti-Muslim Islamophobsphere would be drooling all over this and blaming it on Islam.

Rabbis’ wives urge Israeli women: Stay away from Arab men

By Chaim Levinson (Haaretz)

A letter urging Jewish women not to date non-Jewish men has been published by a group of rabbis’ wives. The letter comes on the heels of a rabbis’ letter published earlier this month urging Jews not to sell or rent properties to non-Jews.

The new letter, signed by 30 rabbis’ wives, says, “For your sake, for the sake of future generations, and so you don’t undergo horrible suffering, we turn to you with a request, a plea, a prayer. Don’t date non-Jews, don’t work at places that non-Jews frequent, and don’t do national service with non-Jews.”

The letter was organized by the organization Lehava, which claims to “save daughters of Israel” from what it calls assimilation. Lehava also took part in the recent demonstrations against selling or renting homes to non-Jews.

The group operates a shelter for women who leave their Arab partners and educate the public on what it calls the dangers that arise from contact between Jews and Arabs. The organization also called for the boycott of the Gush Etzion branch of the supermarket Rami Levi, where Arab and Jewish workers are on shift side-by-side.

In the last few weeks, Bentzi Gopstein of Kiryat Arba, the director of Lehava, convinced the wives of important rabbis in the religious Zionist movement to sign on to the letter. Among the signatories were Netzhiya Yosef, wife of Rabbi Yaakov Yosef, Esther Lior, wife of Rabbi Dov Lior, Shulamit Melamed of Beit Alon and Starna Druckman of Kiryat Motzkin.

The rabbis’ wives letter claims to alert its readers to the phenomenon of Arabs who go by Jewish nicknames, claiming that they are kind and gentle until they can isolate a Jewish woman, whereupon they beat and humiliate her and do not allow her to escape.

In its attempt to appeal to Jewish women, the letter states that they descend from a noble race of kings, and that dating a non-Jew would thereby cut her off from her Jewish family.

Inter-religious marriages do have many challenges. Israel also has some laws about granting permanent residency to Arab husbands of Jewish ladies, so the couple will be further inconvenienced.

    Mindy1,

I’m surprised that you don’t correct some of the misinformation presented here sometimes by posters, i mean misinformation about Jews.

  • http://www.inspiredbymuhammad.com/ Inspired By Muhammad

Mindy1 Robaby wasn’t talking about being “not religious enough” and actually what you said negates Robaby’s comment, which was that conversions are not allowed, though atheist Jews are Jews.

That is the opposite to what you said, which is that you as a Jewess wasn’t accepted for not being religous enough.

Is it right to call Muslims “Islamic Supremacists” because Muslim men cannot marry atheists, budhhists, hindu’s, shintoists, non practicing book women? Such a marriage is not recognised from a religious viewpoint.

The Prophet recommended choosing a mate for their piety and adherance to the laws. Assimilation or lack therof, should not have to mean “supremacist” if you do not conform.

  • mindy1

@Robaby, she may be right. I have a cousin that married into an Orthodox family who considered me and my family not “real” Jews, because we were not religious enough for them-we have not seen them since

“This ain’t new, Jews have been doing this since the beginning, that is why Jews have such a small number, they don’t even allow converts who have been studying Judaism for years to be jewish and favor atheist who are born jews over religious jewish converts.”

    This is misinformation.

Judaism proselytised very successfully (10% of the Roman empire converted to Judaism) until Christianity put a stop to it.

The reason their numbers are small, is because many were killed off primarily by Christians. Also if you are born Jewish, you remain Jewish even if atheist, unless you actively convert to another religion. That’s because of

“I am the Lord your God”

which they interpret to mean, whether they like it or not, God is their God. That only changes if they actively convert to another religion, that’s why Messianics (Jews who convert to Evangelism) are no longer considered Jews though they pretend to be.

I think you’re confusing Druze with Jews, it’s the Druze that don’t allow converts. Judaism does accept converts, they just don’t accept false conversions, or conversions for dollars or for marriage. That’s because, if anything other than a genuine desire to live the laws, is the reason, then the conversion is not sincere. Also, if you follow the 7 Noahide laws, then in Judasim you’re considered righteous and not condemned to hell. In Israel, all the Monotheistic religions,

There is ample proof of where the policy of blind conversions fails. Evangelicals offer inducements to the poor in the world to convert, (by giving aid) for example in Africa and Asia and East Europe, but as soon as these converts reach a point where they are self sufficient they leave Evangelism. Converts for marriage, often leave the faith they entered when the marriage fails, or do not practice the religion once they get what they want, hence the children are not raised in the faith. Again ample proof of this from mixed religious marriages where the converted partner only did for social acceptance and not a genuine love for the faith.

In fact Judaism is flourishing in Europe, and of the American Jewish population, 300,000 are converts. The Chabad movement is very active in proselytising the Noahide laws throughout the world, and does it very successfully.

    Contemporary Issues in Conversion
    myjewishlearning.com/life/Life_Events/Conversion/Contemporary_Issues.shtml

In considering issues relating to the conversion of non-Jews to Judaism, Orthodox Jews tend to defend a strict policy that we term the halakhic approach [one that strictly follows traditional Jewish law]. Conversion for the sole purpose of marriage is highly discouraged. Conversion when the non-Jew does not intend to observe halakhah in full is generally considered to be no conversion at all. Rabbi Melech Schachter, in a fine article on conversion, states what most Orthodox Jews believe:

“Needless to say, conversion to Judaism without commitment to observance has no validity whatever, and the spuriously converted person remains in the eyes of halakhah a non-Jew as before.”

Robaby1984, careful. There may be some truth to your statement but one must remember that generalisation leads to bigotry.

Besides, there is this little incident in the 1940s which significantly reduced the world’s Jewish population… ;)

Oh, stop. They’re not Nazis; they’re just Death Eaters. And we’re all Mudbloods and blood traitors. ;)

Seriously though. Men and women of faith should be above bigotry, not leading the bloody movement.

And the Ishmaelites are Squibs. (I’ll stop now).

Every country, religion, race has its nationalists/supremacists, even Muslims aka Islamic Supremacists :).

    > In its attempt to appeal to Jewish women, the letter states that they
    > descend from a noble race of kings

So us Goyim DON’T have Kings now? Never mind figures like, you know, Xerxes I who are SYMPATHETIC to the Jews, and even mentioned in the Tanakh!

Seriously though, this is racism. Five bucks says these are the same guys who don’t accept the Beta Israel as “real” Jews, let alone the Abayudaya or Bnei Menashe. Yes, I admire that the Jews have been able to preserve their culture and Hebrew throughout the centuries, but this idea of Judaism as a race is just… wrong.

Sephardim, Ashkenazim, Mizrahim, Juhuri… part of what has helped the Jewish people have such a vibrant culture was the ability to assimilate new blood into their community. The Khazars, whose nobility converted in the 8th century or so and established a Jewish state, are a perfect example of that. As much as the hardliners may deny it, it seems probable, even likely, that there WERE significant Jewish conversions in the past, especially in the pre-Diasporic age when Israel and then Judah were powers.

What should matter to Jews is observance of the law, not who is or isn’t “pure.” As the famous (and Jewish) author Isaac Asimov said, “If I could trace my origins to Judas Maccabaeus or King David, that would not add one inch to my stature. It may well be that many East European Jews are descended from Khazars, I may be one of them. Who knows? And who cares?”

Perhaps these hardliner nutjobs in Israel need to look in the mirror and realize that they may have Arab, or Babylonian, or Assyrian, or Persian, or Greek ancestry! They should be celebrating the achievements of Jewish Arabs like Ofra Haza or Reinette l’Oranaise.
