New Documentary: The Muslims Are Coming!

Posted on 17 April 2012 by Emperor

Dean Obeidallah and the comedy group that he is a part of created a documentary called “The Muslims are Coming!” It features interviews with such comedic luminaries as Jon Stewart, Lewis Black, and David Cross as well as media personalities Rachel Maddow and Soledad O’Brien.

    Welcome home Jon Stewart.

    @Ibrahim
    They are first and foremost comedians, it is their primary function to make jokes and poke fun. I come from a country where religion fuses a lot with culture, even so we do make jokes and poke in culture and also religion though with a certain level of self-censorship. And people make this kind of joke everywhere. I mock my own culture, not because I know its true, it does have its own truth but cause I know more or less that it is not true that is why we mock them. So relax. Sometimes life is like that. For example, in modern history people view the Mutazillah sect with hatred, but it was the Mutazillah sect that protected the muslim when they were onslaught from other religious theologians.

    God says that if he had wanted he could have created us all the same, but the fact each and everyone of us are different, we find different ways to express ourselves that is why we need to learn from each other. Different methods in overcoming islamophobic attack is something we should welcome than stifle.

    To tell you the truth, I am proud there are people doing something our cause, even if it is different. I am happy that there are people trying to overcome hatred with laughter, happiness and love. To me this is in many ways beautiful than trying to fight fire with fire. Certain people can be change with logic, but certain people can be change with a change of heart. Let us pray that they will succeed in their endeavor.

    @Ibrahim

    I don’t see how this documentary will reinforce negative stereotypes of Muslims. If anything by mocking people who believe in the paranoid nonsense it may do a lot to get people to understand just how ridiculous it is.

  • Syed

    Hey Emperor! You should also add the way Bobby Spencer weaseled out of an interview with Dean for this documentary.

  • Ibrahim

    @CriticalDragon1177, I was mostly referring to the prominently featured brown hipster girl (I didn’t catch her name), and the people performing on stage; not Stewart, Black, Cross or Maddow. I do understand that it can be mocking of anti-Muslim bigotry; but the very reiteration of such opinions and attitudes, even if satirical–doesn’t it just reinforce the stereotypes or images? Aron Kader, for instance, mocks his Arab heritage and completely pulls a terrorist-y spin on the word “mission” (as per the documentary).
    It’s just a trailer though, and I’m in no great position to speak until I’ve seen it. All I’m saying is that there ought to be a better way to demonstrate Muslim normalcy than this.

    @Ibrahim

    They don’t seem to hate themselves. Also many of the people behind this who appeared in the trailer don’t even label themselves Muslims. Anyway, its more of a mocking of anti Muslim bigots than a mocking of Muslims.

  • Ibrahim

    How are these people in any way representative of Muslims all over the world? They’re very proud of labeling themselves Muslim, true, but what’s so Islamic about them? Most of the jokes advertised on the clip were of the self-hating, self-mocking variety.
