Shaul Spitzer: Teen Gets Prison in Religious Dispute Firebomb

Shaul Spitzer

What if he were Muslim? Spitzer firebombed his neighbor for disagreeing with a Rabbi’s religious opinion. Should Judaism be blamed for this now? Of course not.

Spitzer’s sentence was reduced because of concern about how he will fair in prison life. Hopefully some Muslim prisoners can protect Spitzer while he is in prison, he will certainly need help (h/t: JD):

NY teen gets prison in religious-dispute firebomb

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — A Hasidic teenager was sentenced Tuesday to seven years in prison for the firebomb attack that badly burned a neighbor during a religious dispute in an insular Jewish enclave.

A defense attorney said the sentence was fair but worried about prison life for an 18-year-old who has “never seen TV, never been on the Internet, doesn’t know who Babe Ruth and Derek Jeter are.”

Shaul Spitzer of New Square had been charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to assault as potential jurors gathered for his trial in February. A trial would have brought unwanted attention to New Square, a New York village where nearly every one of the 7,000 residents is a member of the Skver Hasidic sect.

Spitzer admitted that he attacked Aron Rottenberg, a plumber, outside Rottenberg’s home in May. He said he did it because Rottenberg defied New Square’s grand rabbi by worshiping with nursing home residents rather than at New Square’s main synagogue.

Rottenberg, a plumber, claimed in a lawsuit that Spitzer was acting at the direction of the rabbi, David Twersky. The rabbi denied involvement and was not charged. The lawsuit was settled for $2.3 million.

Rottenberg had asked Rockland County Court Judge William Kelly to be lenient with Spitzer, who was also burned, and the judge came down from the 10-year cap he had promised after the plea deal.

Defense attorney Kenneth Gribetz said the sentence was “fair and compassionate.” But he said he fears for Spitzer, who he said will be the rare inmate who has had “no exposure to the outside world.”

“His whole life has been the rabbi and the synagogue and now he’s going to state prison,” Gribetz said. “This is a very severe sentence for a boy from New Square. I hope he can be safeguarded.”

New Square is about 30 miles north of Manhattan. The sect and the village are named for the Ukrainian village of Skver, where sect members were killed during the Holocaust.

    @Nur Ali,

    I could not disagree more with you.

    The What if they were Muslim is a perfect way to expose the hypocrisy of the loons. The fact is, some people find things easier to comprehend when they’re given real-life examples. So by showing how acts of violence are treated differently when committed by non-Muslims is extremely powerful.

  • Reality Check

    The fact is… if you firebomb someone, you have mental disorders and you’re a felon.

    @emperor…

    I have seen many stories that go by the wayside that involve countrymen doing evil things to each other ‘in the name of Islam’…with hardly a comment.

    I would like to see Muslims grasp these topics, without reacting to the stupidity of the loons even being a mention here.

    What if ‘they’ were Muslim…and ‘they’ saw a problem, and they discussed it, they pointed to the Qur’an to show that it isnt allowed, and they condemned the action based on the merit of the act.

    What if Muslims…in thier own forums, showed compassion for the victims of crimes like these…rather than sounding like the haters, bigots and slime we claim to be against who lie.

    I would like to see less of ‘What if they were Muslim’…and more of an intence, frank, hard conversation of self reflection and…yes…even ‘jihad’ on our own problems.

    Again, we pray for the victim, of this crime, not because he was Jewish, or the offender was Jewish…but because the victim is a human being, and the offnder stepped outside of the bounds of humanity to commit his crime…he should be punished.

    Dear Nur,

    No one is standing in the “pain” of anyone else. That has never been the point of “What if…” pieces. We never glorify, or stand in glee of such incidences.

    While our thoughts are with the victim, it does not end there, discussion on the topic does not end.

    These cases highlight a fact, we point out that “no religion should be generalized as evil, or inherently violent because of the actions of a few of its adherents.” That is the difference between us and Islamophobes, we do not generalize, or misattribute.

    We just point out the fact that if a Muslim had done this, his action would be attributed to “Islam,” generalizations about what Islam is would be made, etc.

    I hate ‘What if he were Muslim’

    We should not use the tragedy of others tp point out the evil in others. It is what Zionist do to justify thier treatment of those who oppose them…stand in the pain of someone else to justify thier evil existance.

    I hate when Muslims do this…it makes me angry. The bomber got what he deserved…and we need to pray and hope for the good and well being of his victim.

    the jewish kid would have been labeled either a shoe-bomber, fire-cracker bomber, an underwear bomber, a piggledy-higgledy bomber anything that would have dehumanized him. evidence would have been advanced to his trips back home for jihadi training and video productions acting as a translator, financier and lone-shark sleeper cell operative as part of the north america program of alqaeda. his picture would have been photoshopper to look like the crooked nosed character that loon watch uses in its website. his family would have been linked with terrorist links through marriage all the way to the muslim brotherhood back to pre-sadat days and a global domination agenda would have been offered as a motive for their immigration to the states. suggestions would have been made by the jury to serve him bacon and ham in his supermax jailcell profitted by the all-americans wells fargo bank.
