U.S. Military Taught Officers: Use ‘Hiroshima’ Tactics for ‘Total War’ on Islam

A slide from Army Lt. Col. Matthew A. Dooley’s training materials

It’s one thing when loony bloggers and their fans suggest we “NUKE MECCA,” and quite another when similar suggestions are featured in training materials once used by the US military. (h/t: Just Stopping By)

U.S. Military Taught Officers: Use ‘Hiroshima’ Tactics for ‘Total War’ on Islam

By Noah Shachtman and Spencer Ackerman, Wired

The U.S. military taught its future leaders that a “total war” against the world’s 1.4 billion Muslims would be necessary to protect America from Islamic[sic] terrorists, according to documents obtained by Danger Room. Among the options considered for that conflict: using the lessons of “Hiroshima” to wipe out whole cities at once, targeting the “civilian population wherever necessary.”

The course, first reported by Danger Room last month and held at the Defense Department’s Joint Forces Staff College, has since been canceled by the Pentagon brass. It’s only now, however, that the details of the class have come to light. Danger Room received hundreds of pages of course material and reference documents from a source familiar with the contents of the class.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff recently ordered the entire U.S. military to scour its training material to make sure it doesn’t contain similarly hateful material, a process that is still ongoing. But the officer who delivered the lectures, Army Lt. Col. Matthew A. Dooley, still maintains his position at the Norfolk, Virginia college, pending an investigation. The commanders, lieutenant colonels, captains and colonels who sat in Dooley’s classroom, listening to the inflammatory material week after week, have now moved into higher-level assignments throughout the U.S. military.

For the better part of the last decade, a small cabal of self-anointed counterterrorism experts has been working its way through the U.S. military, intelligence and law enforcement communities, trying to convince whoever it could that America’s real terrorist enemy wasn’t al-Qaida — but the Islamic faith itself. In his course, Dooley brought in these anti-Muslim demagogues as guest lecturers. And he took their argument to its final, ugly conclusion.

“We have now come to understand that there is no such thing as ‘moderate Islam,’” Dooley noted in a July 2011 presentation (.pdf), which concluded with a suggested manifesto to America’s enemies. “It is therefore time for the United States to make our true intentions clear. This barbaric ideology will no longer be tolerated. Islam must change or we will facilitate its self-destruction.”

Dooley could not be reached for comment. Joint Forces Staff College spokesman Steven Williams declined to discuss Dooley’s presentation or his status at the school. But when asked if Dooley was responsible for the course material, he responded, “I don’t know if I would classify him [Dooley] as responsible. That would be the commandant” of the school, Maj. Gen. Joseph Ward.

That makes the two-star general culpable for rather shocking material. In the same presentation, Dooley lays out a possible four-phase war plan to carry out a forced transformation of the Islam religion. Phase three includes possible outcomes like “Islam reduced to a cult status” and “Saudi Arabia threatened with starvation.” (It’s an especially ironic suggestion, in light of today’s news that Saudi intelligence broke up the most recent al-Qaida bombing plot.)

International laws protecting civilians in wartime are “no longer relevant,” Dooley continues. And that opens the possibility of applying “the historical precedents of Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki” to Islam’s holiest cities, and bringing about “Mecca and Medina['s] destruction.”

Dooley’s ideological allies have repeatedly stated that “mainstream” Muslims are dangerous, because they’re “violent” by nature. Yet only a few of al-Qaida’s most twisted fanatics were ever caught musing about wiping out entire cities.

“Some of these actions offered for consideration here will not be seen as ‘political correct’ in the eyes of many,” Dooley adds. “Ultimately, we can do very little in the West to decide this matter, short of waging total war.”

Dooley, who has worked at the Joint Forces Staff College since August 2010, began his eight-week class with a straightforward, two-part history of Islam. It was delivered by David Fatua, a former West Point history professor. “Unfortunately, if we left it at that, you wouldn’t have the proper balance of points of view, nor would you have an accurate view of how Islam defines itself,” Dooley told his students. Over the next few weeks, he invited in a trio of guest lecturers famous for their incendiary views of Islam.

Shireen Burki declared during the 2008 election that “Obama is bin Laden’s dream candidate.” In her Joint Forces Staff College lecture, she told students that “Islam is an Imperialist/Conquering Religion.” (.pdf)

Stephen Coughlin claimed in his 2007 master’s thesis that then-president George W. Bush’s declaration of friendship with the vast majority of the world’s Muslims had “a chilling effect on those tasked to define the enemy’s doctrine.” (.pdf)  Coughlin was subsequently let go from his consulting position to the military’s Joint Staff, but he continued to lecture at the Naval War College and at the FBI’s Washington Field Office. In his talk to Dooley’s class (.pdf), Coughlin suggested that al-Qaida helped drive the overthrow of Egyptian strongman Hosni Mubarak and Libyan dictator Muammar Gadhafi. It was part of a scheme by Islamists to conquer the world, he added. And Coughlin mocked those who didn’t see this plot as clearly as he did, accusing them of “complexification.”

Coughlin titled his talk: “Imposing Islamic Law – or – These Aren’t the Droids Your Looking For!”

Former FBI employee John Guandolo told the conspiratorial World Net Daily website last year that Obama was only the latest president to fall under the influence of Islamic extremists. “The level of penetration in the last three administrations is deep,” Guandolo alleged. In his reference material for the Joint Forces Staff College class, Guandolo not only spoke of today’s Muslims as enemies of the West. He even justified the Crusades, writing that they “were initiated after hundreds of years of Muslim incursion into Western lands.”

Guandolo’s paper, titled “Usual Responses from the Enemy When Presented With the Truth” (.pdf), was one of hundreds of presentations, documents, videos and web links electronically distributed to the Joint Forces Staff College students. Included in that trove: a paper alleging that “it is a permanent command in Islam for Muslims to hate and despise Jews and Christians” (.pdf). So was a video lecture from Serge Trifkovic, a former professor who appeared as a defense witness in several trials of Bosnian Serb leaders convicted of war crimes, including the genocide of Muslims. A web link, titled “Watch Before This Is Pulled,” supposedly shows President Obama — the commander-in-chief of the senior officers attending the course — admitting that he’s a Muslim.

Dooley added the caveats that his views are “not the Official Policy of the United States Government” and are intended “to generate dynamic discussion and thought.” But he taught his fellow military officers that Obama’s alleged admission could well make the commander in chief some sort of traitor. “By conservative estimates,” 10 percent of the world’s Muslims, “a staggering 140 million people … hate everything you stand for and will never coexist with you, unless you submit” to Islam. He added, “Your oath as a professional soldier forces you to pick a side here.” It is unclear if Dooley’s “total war” on Muslims also applied to his “Muslim” commander in chief.

After the Pentagon brass learned of Dooley’s presentation, the country’s top military officer, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey, issued an order to every military chief and senior commander to get rid of any similar anti-Islam instructional material. Dempsey issued the order because the White House had already instructed the entire security apparatus of the federal government — military and civilian — to revamp its counterterrorism training after learning of FBI material that demonized Islam.

By then, Dooley had already presented his apocalyptic vision for a global religious war. Flynn has ordered a senior officer, Army Maj. Gen. Frederick Rudesheim, to investigate how precisely Dooley managed to get away with that extended presentation in an official Defense Department-sanctioned course. The results of that review are due May 24.

Ironically, Dooley and his guest lecturers paint a dire picture of the forward march of Islamic extremism right as its foremost practitioner feared its implosion. Documents recently declassified by the U.S. government revealed Osama bin Laden fretting about al-Qaida’s brutal methods and damaged brand alienating the vast majority of Muslims from choosing to wage holy war. Little could he have known that U.S. military officers were thinking of ways to ignite one.

    My words to Mathew Dooley.

Army Lt. Col. Matthew A. Dooley taught young officers that America’s real terrorist enemy wasn’t al-Qaida — but the Islamic faith itself. He taught them that there is no such thing as moderate Islam and that it is time for the United States to make its true intentions clear.Islam as a barbaric ideology will no longer be tolerated. Islam must change or we will facilitate its self-destruction. Mathew’s plan is to reduce Islam to a cult status and Saudi Arabia to be threatened with starvation.
Mathew Dooly further continues that the protection of civilians in war time is no longer relevant, and he opens the possibility of applying “the historical precedents of Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki” to Islam’s holiest cities, and bringing about “Mecca and Medina['s] destruction.”

As a teacher in the army, Matheww Dooly should have been knowledgeable and fullly aware of the facts and not so ignorant as to throw irresponsible words that might cause ruin and desruction. But this is how vile and dangerous the level of teaching in the American army has reached!

Is mathew Dolley so arrogant as to feel that he can destroy a 1.5 billion Muslims inhabiting the four corners of the world? Is he so impudent as to claim that it is feasible to destroy Muslims’ holy places?

Is he so courageous as to take Allah, his creator as a rival?

As the man seems totally ignorant to me, I find myself obliged to explain some facts to him:

1- Islam is not to be reformed, it is a complete religion, it is the last Testament to the world. It is the road map to Paradise. It came to all people as a universal religion to teach them how to live rightly in order for their deeds to be accepted by their Lord on the Day of Judgment.

2- Islam is a religion of peace, it has nothing to do with terrorism. Mathew hasn’t read the Koran or the Sunna of the prophet in order to know the religion, but he just listen to the venom spit out regarding islam by the biased media and some hate mongers belonging to organizations known by enmity to Islam.

3- Mathew should have known that throughout history Allah has destroyed several rogue countries known by disbelief, racism, bigotry and oppression. People of Pharaoh, Aad, Thamud, Noah ant the disappearance of Atlantis are good examples of Allah’s wrath when poured on the oppressors and rogue countries. A terrible earthquake may come to burry the people and destroy their boasted civilization as happened to the people of Thamud. The people of Lut Allah rained down on them a rain of brimstone. How many have Allah destroyed for their transgression in the land. Allah gave them blessings and opportunities, but they arrogantly went on in their evil ways till dreadful calamities came suddenly to annihilate them. Is America safe against Allah’s wrath if she crosses the limits and try to destroy His holy places and millions of His devotees worshipping Him alone day and night? Mathew Dolley and his like must not forget the Hurricane Katrina, the deadliest, costliest and most destructive Atlantic hurricane. Eighty percent of the houses sunk undereneath water. The sharks were swimming freely between the houses. The shortsighted Mathew Dolley and all Islamophobe hate mogers like him must not forget the earthquake Tsunami which was caused by subduction and triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing over 230,000 people in fourteen countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 98 feet high. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Mathew Dolley must not forget the natural disasters severely attacking the US each year and cause her to suffer billions of dollars. He must not forget that Allah the lord of creation is ruling his earthly kingdom from above seven skies. He is the one who provides, and the one who keeps from.

4- Mathew Dolley and those calling for the annihilation of Muslims and Islam, do they feel secure that Allah’s might shall not come upon them at night while they are sleeping? Do they feel secure that Allah’s might shall not come upon them while they are playing? Do they feel secure against Allah’s devising? None feels secure against Allah’s devising but the people of the lost.

5- Is Mathew Dolley aware of the terrible consequences of a nuclear war? The minute a lunatic press the button to hit any country in the world, the mnute he receives in turn nuclear missiles from other super powers (Russia, China etc..). They will attack severely without thinking, because a lunatic who takes such drastic decision is likely to do so against their own countries as well. In such wars the winner is the one who attacks first. this is the nature of nuclear wars, this is the nature of lethal arrogance Mathew Dolley.

6- by bombing the Muslim world and the terrible consequences resulting from such great evil,America will undergo tests, trials, poverty and misery, and will turn into an underdeveloped country in no time. America will be deprived from the natural resources she relies on in the Muslim world. In addition, she will loose billions of dollars as a result of suspension of trade with the Muslim countries. Bearing in mind the disasterous financial crisis America is now going through, its pressent sick economy will go down further and further, and the American people will find themselves in the end living in poverty and riots. Rich states will separate themselves from poor states, and all states will fight among themselves to protect their own resources and try hard to survive.

7- The Kaaba is the center of the holiest place of worship in Islam. It is
the house of Allah(God). Allah has rendered it a focal point for Muslims around the world. All the Muslims round the globe perform their daily prayers facing towards the Ka’aba from wherever they are. Touching the ka’ba with evil would instantly bring the wrath of Allah on the attackers. Allah’s wrath is intolearble. Allah is the Most Merciful, but He is also vengeful and terrible in retribution.

8- Islam is a complete religion and it is not to be reformed. It is the last Testament to the world, and Muslims strongly adhere to it. Instead of talking about reforming Islam, the United Staes must reform herself first.
Mathew Dolley and his like are afraid that Islam may negatively affect the western civilization. What civilization? Is it the civilization of tecnology advancement? We Muslims buy the technology, and the west invent it to sell to us. What civilization? Is it that of ethics and commendable tradition? During the period 1960-1990 the rate of population growth reached 41% but violent crimes increased during the same period by 560%, children suicide by 200%, divorce by 200%, bastard children by 400%, children living without mother or father by 300%. Social spending however increased by 630%, and education spending by 225% during the same period.
The crime curve reached its peak in 1991 showing a total of 14,872, 900 crimes. Among these were 1,911,770 violent crimes; 12,961,100 property crimes; 24,700 murder crimes. Statistics also showed that America witnesses every year more than 100,000 rape cases. A study undertaken in 1993 by South Carolina University revealed that 12.1 million adult women were expected to be raped. Rape was found to be not only directed to women, but also to children of either sex. Statistics also showed that eight out of ten students were exposed to sex abuse.
Victim advocates and military health leaders say that sexual assault remains a pervasive problem for women serving in all branches of the military, including those deployed overseas. A new assessment of risk factors for sexual assault in the military says that 28% of female veterans reported sexual assault during their careers. In 1996, the Defense Department surveyed women in the military about their experiences in the previous months, and found that 9 percent of women in the marines, 8 percent of women in the Army, 6 percent of women in the Navy and 4 percent of women in the Air Force had experienced a rape or an attempted rape that year. About 200,000 women serve in the military, so these numbers represent more than 10,000 sexual assaults or attempted assaults each year.
It was natural that the spreading of crime would lead to increase in number of prisoners. In 1994 the number of prisoners reached more than one million. This number further escalated in 1995. The number of prisoners was far less than the number of crimes committed each year. For example, in 1992 the number of crimes amounted to 10.3 million, the number of those convicted in these crimes was only 165,000, whereas the number of prisoners for those crimes did not exceed 100,000.

It is about time that the western civilization learns something from the Islamic civilization, the civilization of piety, straightness, directness and uprightness. The civilization of pure monotheism and not polytheism, the civilization of true belief and not disbelief, atheism or paganism.

The halucination Mathew Dolley is spreading about destroying Muslims collectively show clearly that bigotry and fanatism had already penetrated the American army. This matter would certainly hamper any meaningful future relations with the Islamic world.

The problem is primarily with America and not with the Muslim world. The political and religious fabric of America is behind such intolerable lethat views. People joining organizations belonging to the the Christian Right, Judeo-Christian coalition,neo-conservatives, preachers known as false prophets, Right Zionists, as well as some Republican Senators joining Tea party or the above mentioned organizations, are the cause of such dilemma. America must therefore revise its political system which is overwhelmingly influenced by such groups, and reform its religious system that moved from Christianity as a religion to political Christianity that has spread to all aspects of the American life then crossed the borders to affect Muslims in their own countries.

despondent dan20(the “20″ being his net value in ),

Yawn, I see your online mental breakdown is getting worse with each retarded post. Is the result of the constant humiliation you’ve suffered at my hands? Salafi, Wahabi, Deobandi etc, you’re all over the place like heavy duty bird dropping on a wind shield. One thing firmly established is that you’re definitely NOT a Muslim. Why else you would support Islamophobia from hijab bans to raging against Muslims upset at what is being taught in the US military? You declaring takfir on Muslims while decrying Salafis who are most often associated with that act is the height of hypocrisy and sheer stupidity(a common dysfunction amongst the lunatics in Mirza Ghulam Ahmed’s cult). Why would you have to constantly lie and pick fights with your betters, only to run off with your tail between legs? You’re a joke, much like kosher porky, both kafir clowns. Atleast he doesn’t pretend to be a Muslim.
Don’t fool yourself danny boy, you couldn’t take me on with all your lies, distractors and non sequiturs on the best of your half-life. Take “from the wastelands” advice, schizophrenic maggot and “reveal yourself.” 5 bucks says you were cloned from Tarek Fatah’s latest bowel movement.

  • From the wastelands….

Hey Dan, Why don’t you show me how tough you are outside of the keyboard… I’ll even buy you lunch! Silly Sheep….

  • George Carty

No-one seeking to reform and improve any society should act based on the complaints of outsiders, but I think completely excluding Western thought from Muslim societies is going a bit far…

  • dan20

DrMurtad (the Lal Masjid supporting wacko Salafi):

“Is it true a Muslim woman beat you within an inch of your pathetic life after you tried to rip of her veil?”

No but doesn’t the same apply to you when you tried to forcibly veil a woman who refused to wear the niqaab? Shouldn’t you join your Salafi brethren in beating women in Tunisia who refuse to cover up? Funny enough none of us have ever seen you condemn bearded monkeys for beating women who refuse to veil (not like LoonWatch would ever have the courage to condemn Salafis for their backward views to begin with). How does it feel to freak out everytime you see a non-hijabi? Shouldn’t you go back to Pakistan and cheer the murder of Salman Taseer, silly Deobandi vermin?

I’m still waiting for you to reveal yourself if you’re as tough as you portray yourself online.

  • fox news

Another reason why not to trust America. Those reformers attempting reform Islam by looking at complains of the west have to think twice. Any reform should be completely internal to solve internal problem in Muslm society and completely isolated from western thought and their “do what thou will is the whole of the law” system of governance disguised under different philosophical constructs.

  • Sarah Brown

I’m surprised this isn’t getting still more coverage in the media (I’m in the UK, but I mean either here or in the US). Some people and groups obviously do invoke Islam to justify all kinds of actions and practices – but this is just surreal. As others have said, this is the kind of thing you’d expect to see on Atlas Shrugs or somewhere.

  • Garibaldi

Boy did this thread ever devolve…into Saudi Arabia of all things? Strange.

Anywho, attacking and occupying Saudi Arabia is a stupid idea. End.

    On to the topic, yay!!

There is a serious problem in the US military, this is likely only the tip of the iceberg.

  • DrM

@dan20 (the “20″ being your upgraded IQ point)

Yawn, I see you’re lying yet again, using your rectum as source material. You just can’t help it. You’re a broken record. I’m no Salafi, not that theres anything wrong with being one. I also don’t view non-Muslims as “filthy kuffar.” Where am I praying for the US destruction? I do view anti-Muslim trolls like you as filthy low lives worshiping at the altar of US visa, in need of severe humus boarding. And yes, danny boy, you most certainly are a kafir, as was Mirza Ghulam Ahmed. There’s really no point in repeating myself, asking you to substantiate your claims, you can never take me on in a serious debate, you just lie and slither away like a scared little worm.
Is it true a Muslim woman beat you within an inch of your pathetic life after you tried to rip of her veil?

  • From the wastelands….

And it is things like this that make me realize that an united Islamic state will never expand beyond local communities.

@Arun says, “Just Stopping By and Abdulla I do not know if Turkey invading and expelling the Saudis is a good idea,…”

I think that having one country start a war to invade another country and expel its inhabitants is pretty much always a bad idea, and this would not be an exception to that concept. Think of the number of people who would be killed and wounded. And even if the invasion were successful on military terms and we ignored all the moral issues involved, I don’t think that expelling Saudis for thirty years or so will make them look favorably on those who caused the expulsions or on the ideas that they espouse.

Arun: “I do agree that leaving your native countries is beneficial. The Indian diaspora has brought back to India a wealth of knowledge.”

I don’t think anyone here objects to Saudis or anyone else leaving their country voluntarily, either to settle elsewhere or to study or work and then return. It is the involuntary nature of the proposed plan that both makes it morally objectionable and unlikely to succeed.

Arun: “I am not against the Arab countries, and other Muslims countries making peace with Israel. What I don’t understand is why does Saudi Arabia have secret ties with Israel but doesn’t publicy recognise it?”

Welcome to politics, where politicians and countries everywhere say one thing in public but often do something else in private. Saudi Arabia is far from the only country to act in such a manner.

  • http://aayjay.wordpress.com AJ

    Arun,

I would not want war against anyone, even Israel or India. So what next?

  • Arun

    Just Stopping By and Abdulla

I do not know if Turkey invading and expelling the Saudis is a good idea, you would need to be sure the Turks would want that, if they went voluntarily, cool, if not, you cannot force. More important, the UN would not take kindly nor allow, maybe even sanction Turkey. I do agree that leaving your native countries is beneficial. The Indian diaspora has brought back to India a wealth of knowledge. Israel is the best country in the Middle East and one of the best in the world, for it’s scientific miracles, unlike the UAE and Saudi populations it is because Israelis come from all over the world, and the developed West. AJ forgot to mention that without oil the Saudi economy would collapse. It is not self sufficient, not even for food, relies on foreign labour. She herself is proof of that. By contrast, Israel because of it’s diaspora, is unique and is an economic miracle, education, science, IT, and more.

I am not against the Arab countries, and other Muslims countries making peace with Israel. What I don’t understand is why does Saudi Arabia have secret ties with Israel but doesn’t publicy recognise it? If it did, it would go a long way toward helping the Palestinians get independence. Wikileaks Julian Assange revealed these ties. This is not good for the Palestinains.

Wikileaks exposes the cooperation of Saudi intelligence with the Mossad

Islam Times – U.S. intelligence documents published by the WikiLeaks website confirmed that the Israeli Mossad provided confidential help to the Saudi intelligence and showed the deep relation between the security work and the role of journalists, reporters and the media such as the Qatari Al-Jazeera channel and other channels that have become controlled by the U.S. and Israeli security agencies.

The two newspapers “Al-Akhbar” and “Al-Binaa” reported details of the leaked U.S. documents by the intelligence company ‘Stratfor’, highlighting that the relationship between the Israeli Mossad intelligence and Saudi intelligence appeared in a series of leaked e-mails, particularly those leaked on the second of May, 2007.

“Al-Akhbar” newspaper reported that the leaked documents talked about the discussions between the Vice President of anti terrorism of Stratfor, Fred Burton, and analysts. They discussed the cooperation between Israel and Saudi, noting that the Israeli intelligence officials are interested in establishing private commercial relations with the regime in Saudi Arabia.

bringer, if you bothered to read rather than cherry pick you’d notice that most people disagree with above poster, self included.

As for Saudi, I don’t much like the place or the ‘culture’ it choses to export under the guise of ‘helping’ Muslims. Nor do I think that just because it has a good economy and lots of people go to immigrate there that it is a ‘good’ place (using that count places like China are also ‘good’).

However, to order war against another country is wrong. When wars happen many people who have nothing to do with whatever is being fought about are killed or otherwise affected (yes, being killed tops the list but you get orphans, refugees, widows and so on). Those who call for war are just as bad as the others that call for war no matter where they come from.

Saudi will change, it has to. Its economy, despite what people say, is a bit of a bubble and one only has to look next door to the UAE to see what happens when the main source of income dries up. All this concrete and steel will not do much when it falls down in the next 15 years due to shoddy building regulations. Yes, I will certainly be happy when Saudi ‘charities’ stop filling my co-religionists with crap.

There is a civil war within the House of Saud as well, my halal bet is on the side of the ‘reformers’ (hate that word) who don’t like what the ‘wahhibists’ (hate that word too) are doing. Sure, a lot of them are a hypocritical bunch of jumped up rich kids but thankfully the ‘wise men’ of the house exclude such people from positions of power. The Saudi’s themselves are also changing and not all Saudis are what people think. I’ve met nice Saudis, including ones who appreciate the problems in their country and want to solve them.

No war needed, war is never the way to go.

  • Arun

AJ, you kinda confirm what the abdulla guy is saying. If you are in Saudi Arabia, like your blog says, a pakistani mom in riyadh, then you are kinda selfish, if you are saying hey the econonomy here is good, so it don’t matter wot da Saudis do so long as the poor country suffers. It’s self centred. I find this is an ugly trait of some Muslims. They don’t care about others. Would you be saying that if you were living in Sudan or Afghanistan? Why don’t you leave Saudi Arabia and go to the mountains of Pakistan and find a job where the US drones are striking innocents, or in Sudan or in Afghanistan, or where the Lashkira fanatics struck in India, Will you do that?

As an Indian expat I am bothered by this very much. Your problems spill over into India.
