Muslims and Atheists–Least Popular Presidential Choices in the USA

Posted on 24 June 2012 by Emperor

A tongue-in-cheek headline from Islamophobia-Watch:

Good news for Muslim-American presidential candidates – they are marginally less unpopular than atheists

While more than nine in 10 Americans would vote for a presidential candidate who is black, a woman, Catholic, Hispanic, or Jewish, significantly smaller percentages would vote for one who is an atheist (54%) or Muslim (58%). Americans’ willingness to vote for a Mormon (80%) or gay or lesbian (68%) candidate falls between these two extremes.

The results are based on a June 7-10 Gallup poll, updating a question Gallup first asked in 1937 in reference to a female, Jewish, or Catholic candidate and has asked periodically since then, with additional candidate characteristics added to the list.

    @Critical, I think the general understanding is that Washington was a deist.

  • Sean

    Atheists consistently rank lower than Muslims in every poll I’ve seen, but these numbers show many more people willing to vote for both groups than previous surveys (It’s hard to find the old polls now that this new one is out). The 2007 Gallup poll showed 53 percent would not vote for an atheist vs. 43% now. That’s considerable progress if the polls are accurate.

    @Steve

    I think Washington would regard himself as a Christian, although he wouldn’t be a Christian in the eyes of the religious right today.

  • Steve

    Oops, I read catholic as christian. Washington wasn’t a christian

    @Steve
    Neither were most all of the presidents.

    Yes, slowly but surely, progress against bigotry is being made. I would caution though that this poll may make Americans appear somewhat better than they really are. Not all people, especially bigots, want to admit so, especially to a pollster.

    @Emperor

    Well if this poll is accurate at least more than American Citizens would vote for a Muslim or an atheist candidate if they thought they were qualified. I was expecting the percentages to be even lower for both groups.

  • Steve

    George Washington was none of those
