Having a mosque and church in the same street can open the door to many interfaith opportunities yet anti-Islam crusader, Daniel Nalliah, wants to shut every opportunity away.

‘Sharia zone’: Christian pastor fires up over mosque-next-door plan

Anti-Islam crusader Daniel Nalliah and his evangelical Christian church are set to fight a plan to build a mosque in the same street.

Mr Nalliah, a pastor at Catch the Fire Ministries, said his church was weeks away from building a $2 million base at 25 Green Street, Doveton.

He recently learnt of a planning application by an Afghan community group to build the Omar Farooq Mosque next door. The church, along with more than 100 petitioners including adjoining residents, will formally object to Casey Council over the mosque proposal.

No objections had been raised against Catch the Fire’s church, which had been approved by the council, Mr Nalliah said.

Afghan-Australian Association of Victoria president Khaliq Fazal, as spokesman for the mosque proponents, accused Mr Nalliah and his church of distributing “hysterical” anti-mosque leaflets to “agitate” neighbours.

He said the mosque was a “place for peace and for the worship of the same god that we all believe in”.

“The Afghan community has a very good reputation and has assimilated well in a multicultural society since the 1860s. We’ve never had any problem with any other religions. We believe in Jesus Christ as well, so what’s the problem?”

Mr Nalliah — an outspoken figure who sparked outrage for attributing Black Saturday bushfires to Victoria’s abortion laws — said he did not know who was behind the leaflets.

He said his objections to the mosque trailed back to a long-running racial vilification dispute with the Islamic Council of Victoria over a Catch the Fire newsletter about Muslims and the Koran in 2002.

Mr Nalliah said he and his family received death threats during the dispute, which cost the church $600,000. “Not once have we said people should bust up a Muslim or burn down a mosque.

“We don’t approve of Islam as a religion but we love Muslim people. Islam teaches that those who follow other religions are infidels.

“It is a religion that doesn’t value freedom of religion. Having those same teachings right under our noses is counter-productive to our church.”

He said that homes vacated by “fed-up” neighbours would be bought up by Muslims, creating a “sharia [the moral code and religious law of Islam] zone”.

Casey planning manager Duncan Turner said the council would consider any public submissions “received up until it makes its decision”.

I almost cried at the stupidity if this guy.

“We don’t approve of Islam as a religion but we love Muslim people.”

This is the phoniest talking point, they don’t truly mean it. Every time they say this, their words are betrayed by the racist rhetoric and actions they take. They don’t really “love” us, they pretend to because their religion commands to love and they don’t live up to it. Sad.

OT, I just heard palestine was admitted to the UN as a nonobserver state whatever that means. I already got a panicky email from the simon weisenthal center about how the UN is denying the historic link between Israel and the Jewish people.

Having those same teachings right under our noses is counter-productive to our church.”

Yes, indeed – less clink in the collection plate. Isn’t it funny how scared many Christian leaders are of their flock learning about Islam, whereas Muslim leaders almost always just shrug their shoulders at all the futile missionary activities targeted at Muslims? That alone – but even more so in light of the fact that >20% of all U.S. Muslims are converts — says a lot about what the real fear of Islam is about in the U.S.

    @Dawood:

Ahh, nice to be relegated to “other places of worship” in some cities. ;-)

Of course, Melbourne is the only city where I have seen an Orthodox synagogue with a plaque referring to God as female.

  • Dawood

He is just trying to promote his church and remain relevant. Anyone who has visited Melbourne, let alone Sydney or Canberra knows that there are plenty of instances of mosques being beside churches, beside Buddhist temples, and other places of worship, without incident or issue.

    CORRECTION:

Here is the passage of Quran 22:40

[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right – only because they say, “Our Lord is Allah .” And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned. And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.

“We don’t approve of Islam as a religion but we love Muslim people. Islam teaches that those who follow other religions are infidels.

    RESPONSE:

The word “infidel” was historically coined by Christians during the Crusades to describe the Muslims:

“Infidel is an English language word commonly used to translate the equivalent Arabic language word for non-Muslims; kafir, literally the one who “covers”, is usually translated as “disbeliever”; i.e. in English translations of the Quranic verse, 109:1,[16][17][18] In the Islamic doctrinal sense, the term only refers to a person who does not recognize the one God (Allah) such as atheists and polytheists. However, since Islam considers Jews and Christians as fellow believers they are called “People of the Book (Ahl al-kitab)” instead.[19][20][21]

Kafir, like infidel, has also come to be regarded as offensive,[22] thus some Muslim scholars discourage its use due to the Quran’s command to use kind words.[23][22] It is even a punishable offense to use this term against a Jew or a Christian, under Islamic law.[22] Some contemporary Muslim extremists, however, have applied the term to all non-Muslims.[19]”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infidel

Here is a big mistake with translation, one that is sometimes committed by Muslims, too. If you look at the English dictionary meaning of infidel, you would find that it means someone who does not have a faith or does not believe in Allah. Does the Qur’an say that the Jews and Christians do not believe in Allah? No. In Surat Al-`Ankabut (29:46), Allah says that the God of Christians, Jews, and Muslims is one and the same. The word infidel is an inaccurate translation of the word kafir in this case.

The term kafir, referring to a person, or kufr, referring to an act, is used in the Qur’an in a variety of contextual meanings. This is why I hesitate to use even the terms non-believer or disbeliever for the translation, as is it is not clear from these English terms what is the object of unbelief or disbelief, it is God, a particular prophet, or others?

    http://www.onislam.net/english/shariah/shariah-and-humanity/faq/427875.html

So the word “infidel” means “atheist”, not Jew and Christian, it was INVENTED by the Christians themselves. IT is emphatically used by a Crusader in the movie “Kingdom of Heaven”. I doubt “Daniel Nalliah” has seen that movie.

“It is a religion that doesn’t value freedom of religion. Having those same teachings right under our noses is counter-productive to our church.”

    RESPONSE:

You are a LIAR and deceiver. The Quran allows the FREEDOM of faith (Q. 2:256), it only commands to fight “Those who fight you” (2:190, 22:39, 60:8, 8:61).

“It is a religion that doesn’t value freedom of religion. Having those same teachings right under our noses is counter-productive to our church.” (22:40).

Muslims are allowed by the US constitution to build mosques.

“Where the preamble declares, that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed by inserting ‘Jesus Christ,’ so that it would read ‘A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion;’ the insertion was rejected by the great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mohammedan, the Hindoo and Infidel of every denomination.” -Thomas Jefferson, Autobiography
