Does Philadelphia have a ‘burqa crisis’?

Daniel Pipes has written an article claiming that his home town of Philadelphia has “become the capital of the Western world as regards female Islamic garb as an accessory to crime”.

According to Pipes, “the Philadelphia region has witnessed 14 robberies (or attempted robberies) of financial institutions in the past six years in which the thieves relied on an Islamic full-body cover”. His solution? “Ban the niqab and burqa in public places, as the national governments in France and Belgium have recently done.”

Joel Mathis points out some flaws in this argument:

It’s important to understand, though, that Pipes’ “crisis” looks a little less disturbing when looked at closely. He justifies a ban because, by his count, at least 14 robberies have been committed in Philadelphia using Muslim garb … since 2007. That’s less than three a year. If you need more perspective, consider this: The 14 robberies that Pipes counts adds up to maybe one really busy shift for the police department. In the 28-day period ending Feb. 17, there were 507 robbery reports to city police – if 14 of those robberies had been committed by burqa-wearing assailants, that wouldn’t even be 3 percent of the total. Trying to calculate what those 14 cases look like compared to six or more years of robberies? You couldn’t even see a number that small with the naked eye.

So one doesn’t have to be politically correct to respond to Pipes by saying we don’t have a “burqa crisis.” All one needs, really, is math.

You can only ride on lies for so long ? Especially with the social media breaking across barriers.

Yes, cherry picking. You can say anything you want to say with facts that way. And the sad part is that lots of people are going to just believe it blindly, because 1, they are ignorant in terms of experience and 2. they are too lazy to check things out for themselves.

    Thank you for that
I thought that a bit odd too to compare the crimes like that .
The whole blog was cherry picking crimes all over the world and going back to the 1930′s even before Pipes was born , that involved the burka or niqab , Frankly I expected more crimes considering the number of people who wear these garments and their obvious hiding potential.
One does wonder since stockings/nylons have been used by many a bank robber is Pipes in favour of banning these too ?

    Nice bit of sleuthing that.
From the article: “Not fatal but equally horrific, was the Jan. 14-15 abduction and rape of a 5-year-old child in Philadelphia.”
Why is this considered not fatal ???
Like what, rape is not fatal, its only horrific ?

I have been thinking , does the Philly Police department have nothing better to do and classify bad people by their fashion sence ? Or where does Pipes get his information from ? What reliable records is he finding these gems of information .

So I had a look at the origional article. Jewish Press .com no less .

Where the origin is revealed as …….. Daniel Pipes own blog .

Then I decided look on Pipes own blog …… after several seconds of reading I discovered that of these 14 robberys . The police think 8 were committed by the same two guys ….. maybe more . All reported in the local philly press

Must be a slow day in Loonville

Philly has problems but a “burka crisis” isn’t one of ‘em.
