Child Marriages in the USA is not a “Muslim Problem”

“They are for child marriages”. Who has not heard that myth about Islam and Muslims? But what about the USA? There are states in the USA that allow marriages of children aged 12,13 or 14, and has done so since the 1700s and 1800s. And guess what? It is mainly a “Christian” problem.

Most states in the USA prohibit child marriages, but not all, and there are “exceptions” in most states that allow minors to marry if a court okays it even if the minimum age is higher.

In Virginia 12 year-old’s were allowed to marry until last year when the minimum age was raised.

Between 2004 and 2013, 4,500 children under the age of 18 were married in the state, with more than 200 of them younger than 15. State authorities decided they had enough of this grossness and abolished laws that allowed parental and judicial consent for girls 12 to 13 to get married if they were pregnant.

In New Hamsphire the minimum age is 13:

It’s not often middle-schoolers get married in New Hampshire. But it’s still perfectly legal, after the Republican-led House killed a bill Thursday to raise the marriage age to 18. The rejection leaves intact a state law that lets girls get married as young as age 13 with parental consent and sign-off from a judge. Boys a year older can marry with the same approvals.

In North Carolina the minimum age is 14:

“If an unmarried female who is more than 14 years of age, but less than 16 years of age, is pregnant or has given birth to a child and the unmarried female and the putative father of the child, either born or unborn, agree to marry, or if an unmarried male who is more than 14 years of age, but less than 16 years of age, is the putative father of a child, either born or unborn, and the unmarried male and the mother of the child agree to marry, the register of deeds is authorized to issue to the parties a license to marry; and it shall be lawful for them to marry in accordance with the provisions of this Chapter,”

In New Jersey the minimum age is 18. But children can marry younger, with parental consent. Judges can even allow 13 year old’s to marry.

The minimum marriage age in New Jersey is 18. However, children ages 16 or 17 may wed with “parental consent” (with no process in place to ensure it’s not actually “parental coercion”), and children 15 or younger may wed with judicial approval (with no minimum age below which a judge may no longer approve a marriage, and with no instructions for judges not to approve marriages for couple at ages or with age differences that are considered statutory rape).

The situation

The last case, New Jersey, shows one important thing. There are exceptions to the laws in almost all states, meaning that if the law formally states that the minimum age is 18, the real minimum age might be below that age.

This is how it looks like if one disregards the exceptions.

Eleven other states — Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wisconsin—and the District of Columbia require parties to be at least age 16. Five states require parties to be at least age 15: Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland and Utah. Three states require parties to be at least age 14: Alaska, New York and North Carolina. One state requires males to be at least age 14 and females to be at least age 13: New Hampshire. Case law in Massachusetts, but not statute, directs that males must be at least age 14 and females must be at least age 12.

The number of “child marriages” are not high. As PEW research showed the numbers are below 1%. Child marriages in the USA are mainly a problem in some Christian communities, as has been described in several articles in New York Times, Washington Post.

170,000 children were wed between 2000 and 2010 in the USA, in 38 of the 50 states where data was available.

Some people spread myths about the “Muslim threat” and claim that child marriages is an “imported” problem. The “Muslims” are as usual the ones to blame. IT IS NOT AN IMPORTED PROBLEM. The laws of the states are in some cases hundred years old or more and most cases has to do with non Muslims.

Like you said, we can expect more human trash to act out their violent fantasies. Like the guy who drove a van into a crowd of people at a mosque in London and shouted “I want to kill Muslims”. For me that’s as evil an individual as the Serb ruffians who killed Bosniaks. For the mainstream media he’s just “a nut.” Were it the other way round the mainstream media say “Terrorist” without hesitation. I too am very angry at the islamophobic crowd yet I don’t go around knocking over or shooting or stabbing people. After all this will not bring back to life anybody who was murdered in Bosnia or in Syria, Iraq, etc.

  • Friend of Bosnia

Hah, did you see her birth certificate?

  • AJ

If you advocate kids having sex, you shouldn’t have a problem with the same kids declaring each other ‘man and wife’. I hope you are able to see the hypocrisy in your argument if you don’t agree.

  • Alistair John

You can stop children getting married by not allowing authorities to marry them below a certain age. To stop someone having sex you would, presumably, need to physically restrain them. Are you advocating locking them up? Having them followed constantly? Putting them in chastity belts? Having been a horny teenager I can’t imagine any way to stop two or more horny teenagers doing what comes naturally, short of the previously mentioned things, none of which are legal. But if you have another method I’d be interested to know what that was. My suspicion is that the world in which teenagers are preventing from having sex is not one I would want to live in. I value freedom more than I do notions of sexual decorum and morality.

  • GaribaldiOfLoonwatch

It’s how this was written and then just a few days ago Nicolas Kristoff wrote an article on child marriage being a problem in the West. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/26/opinion/sunday/it-was-forced-on-me-child-marriage-in-the-us.html

  • AJ

The same way you make those children not get married.

  • Alistair John

And how would you stop children having sex?

  • Friend of Bosnia

It’s worse that that. “… out of this world” – do you see he’s threatening murder? Either he or somebody else would commit it.

  • Joey Sanders

The FBI is investigating the attack and will determine whether it should be categorized as a federal hate crime or an act of domestic terrorism. I’ve read that in a few articles about the attack.

If the attacker was Muslim, the FBI would be shouting, “Terrorism!!! Terrorism!!! We need a bigger budget.”

  • Awesome

At least the Muslims don’t consider it to be a problem. After all, Muhammad had sex with a 9 year old girl.

Correction: Prophet Muhammad legally consummated his marriage with his wife; a woman who is alleged to have been as young as 9 years old at the time.

  • Friend of Bosnia

All those attackers were petty criminals and not religious at all before. And always the authorities had them on the radar and did not stop them. In Berlin, in Nice, in London, in Madrid, it was all the same. In Berlin, the attacker’s police file (he ha da pretty heavy one) was doctored by some guys in the police Department so it would not show that they had him earmarked as a possible danger. Food for thought …

  • Friend of Bosnia

Exactly. Or if they are face to face they respond with violence and then they should be knocked cold, fortwith!

  • Friend of Bosnia

I refuse to discuss with such evil fools who think that I’m as foolish as they are. Already that, and that means every statement in this sense, is an insult and an offense to me.

  • Friend of Bosnia

“Expect more human trash to act out their violent fantasies in the near future.”
Oh yes, of course. People who talk murder, genocide, or what is the same, crusade and reconquista, will eventually do the same or make others do it. Like the guy you mentioned above. Guys like that are the ones who got Bosniak blood on their hands in 1992-95 – very much blood indeed. And such guys are allowed to walk free. Now, what must one do to be prepared for facing such a situation? When I go out of the house, must I carry a two-by-four, or a can of Mace or a Taser or a weapon, or all of the above? And then get charged with murder for trying to avert danger from others? What shall I do if I see soembody on the train or subway molesting a Muslim woman? My first reaction would be to knock him cold before he does something really bad, but, alas, I’m not that young, I haven’t got fast reflexes, I’m not built and trained as an elite soldier. What if I try to talk some reason into him and he sticks a knife into me? Or if it’s a whole group of them and they beat and kick me to death? Do I just say a prayer and die? Ah, they’re always sanctimoniously talking about civil coutage but when you show it they take you for a murderer? Wa Allah, let me never have to face such a situation. Because I know I’d have You on my side but not the people.

  • Friend of Bosnia

Guys who think like that have, through history, also put their words into action and committed genocide. They do not deserve to walk this Earth. The very least they deserve is to be kicked in their behind, very hard.

There is no way that you will accept any validity to my arguments so I will not keep trying (aside from this final statement). As far as knowing nothing about Islamic law, it seems that when anyone criticizes it we immediately hear, “Oh it’s so broad and complex that no one really understands it. . . etc.”

There is not much to understand. Our Constitution is a very humanist document. One of its greatest qualities is that it can be changed. As such it is superior to any law based on religious belief. Religiously based laws, if regarded as divinely inspired, by their very nature can’t be changed my mere human action.

“Free Practice of Religion” allows for people to follow their religions’ laws, so long as they are in accordance with Constitutionally protected rights. When these laws conflict with Constitutional principles, the Constitution takes precedent. This goes for all religiously based laws. . . Judaic, Catholic, or Islamic.

If a Jew, Muslim, or Catholic chooses to violate their religions’ laws, no government authority can do anything about it, other than protect the individual’s rights. Indeed, it is the government’s duty to protect said rights.

When the question of whether Sharia is compatible with the Constitution, that’s all anyone needs to know.

I have read your comments on this site and I must say that I despise you very much.

I feel terrible about what happened at the Ariana Grande concert. I’m just wondering if the attack was because he did this in the name of Islam or he just hated the direction pop music has gone in the last decade.

Was the attacker a Muslim fundamentalist? It appears he was not. Many people have stated in various articles that he liked to have a drink every now and then.

But when children are being blown to bits in Muslim countries through illegal drone attacks, did you think the children of the Western World were going to be immune to being attacked? Keep in mind, the attacker’s sister has stated that a possible motive for his attack was revenge for the children killed in Syrian airstrikes recently.

You don’t have to be a religious person to get upset over children being bombed for no reason. People like you are the sickness of the world. You only care when it is White European kids being bombed. You could care less about those Muslim children though. To you, their lives mean nothing. That is why you are a disgusting human being.

I did history at school too. It taught me that Columbus discovered the New World even though there were people already living here. lol

When you don’t have facts, that is what losers like you resort to.

  • AJ

There are bigger things to worry about than a document published a few hundred years after the Proohet’s death which contradicts other documents regarding Ayesha’s age. We don’t lose sleep over Ayesha’s age at marriage. You shouldn’t either, you silly old chap!

  • golden izanagi

wow that response was just dripping intelligence you deserve around of applause for that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAryFIuRxmQ

Just saw his comment history, yep…a typical Breitbart, alt-right, ‘alternative facts’ trash.

    Q. Are the alt-right mentally thicker than bag of bricks?

    a) Yes
    b) Yes
    c) Sarcastic Yes
    d) No (Yes)
