Islamophobic hoax exposed

Tahir Alam – who has been the target of an Islamophobic campaign, originating in the Sunday Times and subsequently taken up by a number of other media outlets including BBC News, which claimed that there was a “Islamic plot” to take over Birmingham schools and even that this was a case of “terrorism in the UK” – has issued a press statement refuting the allegations.

Responding to the “leaked” letter outlining the supposed plot, Tahir Alam condemns “the baseless and false assertions that have been made in this anonymous, unsigned and undated document, the authenticity of which any decent and fair-minded person would question and quite quickly conclude as a hoax”.

Indeed, as even the most cursory read through the document will confirm, it is quite obviously faked. The fact that it has been taken seriously in the news media is a worrying reflection of the extent to which anti-Muslim prejudice in the UK today has destroyed journalists’ capacity for critical thinking when it comes to evaluating spurious Islamophobic propaganda.

  • I honestly have no idea. One of the symptoms of my illness (and unfortunately also a side-effect of the drugs for it) is that it dulls my wits; I literally don’t remember anything of yesterday before the evening. (that doesn’t happen every day, mind)
I reckon I must have clicked on a link and got sucked in.

  • Jekyll

Why are you answering five month old comments, good Sir ?

  • “The document may be a hoax, but it has now been shown that nearly all of
the tactics and actions in it have been used in at least six schools.”
    Umm, no it hasn’t…
I’m from the future (November to be precise) and I can say with certainty that the whole thing has been exposed as a giant lie. “Tip of an iceburg?” Yea, an iceburg that fits in my drinking glass.

  • Susan Bramhall

Any comment now, folks? The document may be a hoax, but it has now been shown that nearly all of the tactics and actions in it have been used in at least six schools. This is only the tip of an iceberg, but I will now probsbly be poo’pooed by you all for saying so.
You ain’t seen nothing yet, and having worked right in the centre of all this for over ten years, I know exactly what I’m talking about. I feel sorry for the vast majority of muslims in Birmingham, who are ordinary, peace loving people. They are now having to live their lives with these hardliners vying for control.

  • sasboy

If this is a hoax, expose it as such to the very hilt.

Meh, it’s been two days now. Too late.

  • Tanveer Khan

I’m not sure I understand the Tunbridge Wells reference xD

  • Chameleon_X

So where is the walll of shame to list all the journalists who have run with these Islamophobia-promoting stories that are so obviously false and bigoted? Perhaps a future LW resource page?

  • Talking_fish_head

It’s your right as a concerned citizen to report any false information to the media, if you are going to send them a message, make sure to be calm and not use inflammatory words.

  • Peeper

I like the times state it maybe a hoax, factuality and objective journalist seems to be a bigger hoax, today. At least this man can sue for libel.

  • Tanveer Khan

I was tempted to write a letter to them…

On the last page of that document, part of a statement reads “,,,to avoid putting key advice to the school in writing so that there is no record..”
    Ah, well.

  • Seeker

Damn ! I totally fell for this one. I didn’t read the article; just saw the headline online and thought it might be true and that’s it probably been foiled, etc etc etc.

  • Sam Seed

I agree, you have more chance of being abducted by UFOs than the receive an apology from the Mail.

  • Sam Seed

Yeah I also found that story pretty dramatic, so was that also a hoax? Maybe we can go ask Richard LittleBigJohn.

  • The greenmantle

I must admit I totally agree about the first point . Who would be foolish enough to put such a plan in writing ? and then let it fall into the hands of the press or the local authority?. Shades of the Protocols of Zion .me thinks
However I think your second point is a bit misplaced and over blown having read the BBC report and looked in to it further . Two governers had a row with the head teacher and the local authority mishandled the situation . Such rows are not unknown in many parts of the UK for many reasons . The role of perant governers being to make sure that the views of perants are represted in the running of the school . I know schools were the perant governers have made suggestions that the school uniform include a hijab in the schools colours , a perfectly reasonable suggestion in my view and this was taken on board .

As long as they can sell large amounts of papers, the truth (to them) can go to hell

  • mindy1

    yellow journalism at it’s best

  • mindy1

What’s sad is that people believed it :/

  • Talking_fish_head

Its almost as if they make up stories to make a quick buck

  • Tanveer Khan

It’s best to be wary. Today I saw an article in the times called “MUSLIM PARENTS ASK POLICE TO SAVE SONS FROM JIHAD”. Pretty dramatic. I immediately became suspicious and decided to read through it and lo and behold! No more mention of parents begging police to save sons from the scourge of struggle anywhere.

Thanks for helping us reclaim the word Jihad , The Times!

  • Sam Seed

I saw this in the local paper and was alarmed, glad it turned out to be a hoax. I really can’t trust any of the news outlets now, particularly ones in relation to Islam. But I’ve yet to see the tabloids carrying these fear mongering headlines actually acknowledging the fact that it was a hoax.
